Preliminary Material -- INTRODUCTION -- FLAUBERT : DE L’HISTOIRE A L’ANTHROPOLOGIE: SALAMMBO -- L’ÉDUCATION SENTIMENTALE -- DIGRESSION : LE PARADIGME BIOLOGIQUE ET MEDICAL CHEZ BURCKHARDT ET NIETZSCHE -- ZOLA : DU PROGRES A LA PULSION: ZOLA ET LE NATURALISME -- NANA -- GERMINAL -- ZOLA : PANORAMA ET CONCLUSION -- FONTANE : DESIR ET CONTRAINTE SOCIALE: LES PREDECESSEURS FRANÇAIS -- EFFI BRIEST -- IRRUNGEN, WIRRUNGEN -- CONCLUSION -- BIBLIOGRAPHIE -- INDEX DES NOMS -- TABLE DE MATIERES.

Preliminary Material -- List of Abbreviations -- Introduction -- Das Unheimliche -- Extra-ordinary Homes -- De-familiarization -- A Narrative Ethics of the Unhomely -- General Conclusion -- Bibliography. Subjects Not-at-home is the first book-length study of the concept of the uncanny ( Das Unheimliche ) in the context of French literature. It explores the ways in which certain contemporary French novelists are exploiting the themes, imagery and dynamics of the uncanny to generate a repertoire of narrative tactics for the portrayal of the chez soi . Through an analysis of nine novels by Marie NDiaye, Eugène Savitzkaya and Emmanuel Carrère, the author reveals a developing tendency within current writing to re-appropriate figures of the strange – the double, intellectual uncertainty, the fragmented body, the spectral, the haunted house – in order to represent the ‘familiar’ spaces of the home, the family, the self and the everyday. This problematic is situated with respect to tendencies in present-day French writing, with the uncanny being viewed as a particular approach to the contemporary novel’s inclination to privilege the site of the chez soi . Readings of the literary texts are informed by philosophical, psychoanalytic and literary reinterpretations of the Freudian uncanny, with an emphasis on the historical and contextual evolution of the concept itself

Preliminary Material -- Preface -- Theatricality -- The Cast -- The Stage -- The Wardrobe -- The Audience -- General Bibliography -- Bibliography of Texts by and on Loti. Pierre Loti and the Theatricality of Desire offers an original analysis of patterns of unconscious desire observable in the life and work of the French orientalist writer Pierre Loti. It aims to reconcile attitudes and conduct that have been regarded as contradictory and not amenable to analysis by locating the unconscious urges that motivate them. It looks at the ambiguous feelings Loti expresses towards his mother, the conflicting desires inherent in his bisexuality, and his deeply ambiguous sense of a cultural identity as expressed through his cross-cultural transvestism. The political implications of this reappraisal are also considered, offering a potential reassessment of the apparently exploitative nature of much of Loti's writing. This new reading in terms of the unconscious not only serves as a way of understanding inconsistencies, but also suggests how such new interpretations can offer an alternative way of viewing the hierarchies of power his work portrays on both a sexual and political level. This volume is consequently of interest to those interested in gender studies and sexual politics, and offers a way of appreciating writing that might otherwise appear dated and embarrassingly sexist and colonialist in content to twenty-first century readers

Theatre and fictional memoir are supposedly opposites: the former has to do with the performing arts, while the latter focuses on the intimate side of life. A literary genre emblematic of the eighteenth century, fictional memoir invites readers to move beyond this assumption. Although lived experience is at the heart of the memoir, such fiction also appropriates the language of comedy or tragedy for the benefit of a novel of interiority. This book highlights fictional memoir’s debt to the theatre, while examining how its writing developed based on various borrowings and processes characteristic of the stage. By self-inventing within a culture dominated by enthusiasm for stage performance, this genre thereby endowed future literature with the constitutive elements of a language of the intimate

Contributions de : Fabienne Bercegol, Claudie Bernard, Céline Bricault, Suzel Esquier, Isabelle Hervouet-Farrar, François Kerlouégan, Mireille Labouret, Alex Lascar, Roland Le Huenen, Jean-Philippe Luis, Maria Makropoulou, Marion Mas, Thierry Poyet, Éléonore Reverzy, Anne Rouhette, Claude Schopp, Jean-Christophe Valtat. Balzac et consorts. Scénographies familiales des conflits historiques dans le roman du XIXe siècle highlights the way in which family networks as depicted in the novels throughout the 19th century mirror the main historical conflicts of that period. As in Balzac’s novels, whose fiction exemplarily translates the effects of historical events on the individuals, these narratives are not considered as a collection of documents but rather as a special way of staging History and its main consequences onto the very heart of intimate relationships. In this context, the notion of “scenography” is essential: it points both to a narrative device and to a dramatization of these conflicts

Schehr. The essays collected in this volume address and illuminate a number of works, both canonic and not, in French literature and culture through the use of queer theory as it pertains to a European, and specifically, French, context. The volume brings together studies of classic literature and film, including Balzac, Genet, and Godard, and juxtaposes these works with works by lesser-known artists as well as with implicit and explicit theoretical understandings of “queer.” This volume will be of interest to all researchers in French literature and culture and to those interested in the ramifications of queer theory in a contemporary context

Un Jésus postmoderne offers a thorough discussion of some forty contemporary French novels depicting the life of Jesus within the framework of today’s debate on fundamentalism and secularism. Focusing on the interplay of narrative viewpoints and (anti)theological perspectives, this study scrutinizes the postmodern representation of Jesus for readers who belong to a time marked by incredulity towards meta-narratives. Drawing on Marcel Gauchet and Julia Kristeva, as well as René Girard’s ‘scapegoat theory’, among many others, this study examines Jesus as a ‘problematic hero’ and a ‘conceptual character’ on the threshold of the new millennium. It shows how these novels reflect recent advances in biblical exegesis, religious anthropology, psychoanalysis and theology.
