    ger: Die Dissertation aus dem Fachgebiet American Studies stellt eine interdisziplinäre Arbeit mit den Schwerpunkten komparative Mythologie/Anthropologie, Musik und Film dar. Untersucht werden die Zusammenhänge zwischen Heldendarstellung im Film und der entsprechend eingesetzten Filmmusik. Joseph Campbells Konzept der Heldenreise wird dabei auf ein neues Konzept der musikalischen Heldenreise im Film transferiert und mit Beispielen aus 12 ausgewählten Filmen belegt. eng: The thesis at hand deals with the heroic journey as depicted by film music. I argue that the mythological pattern for the heroic journey as laid out and demonstrated by Joseph Campbell can be applied to film music in an altered and adapted form. I summarize Campbell’s mythological journey that originally consists of seventeen steps in seven steps that are crucial for the musical accompaniment of the hero’s journey in film. Furthermore, I demonstrate the existence of this pattern with a detailed analysis of the film music of twelve characteristic examples.

    The voice in the headphones says, "you're rolling" . . .The Voice in the Headphones is an experiment in music writing in the form of a long poem centered on the culture of the recording studio. It describes in intricate, prismatic detail one marathon day in a recording studio during which an unnamed musician struggles to complete a film soundtrack. The book extends the form of Grubbs's previous volume Now that the audience is assembled, sharing its goal of musicalizing the language of writing about music. Mulling the insight that "studio is the absence of pushback"-now that no audience is assembled-The Voice in the Headphones details one musician's strategies for applying the requisite pressure to the proceedings, for making it count. The Voice in the Headphones is both a literary work and a meditation on sound recording, delivered at a moment in which the commercial recording studio shades into oblivion. It draws upon Grubbs's own history of several decades as a recording artist, and its location could be described as every studio in which he has set foot

    Ein Film ohne Musik ist praktisch nicht denkbar. Doch wie stark ist ihr Einfluss auf die Erzählung, der über die reine Verstärkung anderer Elemente hinausgeht? Alexander Lederer sucht in zwölf Hollywoodfilmen nach Spuren von eigenständigen narrativen Potenzialen der Musik im Film. Er entwickelt ein filmnarratologisches Modell, das die audiovisuelle Erzählung als performatives Ereignis begreift, in dem Publikum und Film als intentional »denkende« Akteur*innen aufeinandertreffen. Durch die Hinzunahme empirischen Werkzeugs der Performance Studies rückt er das subjektive Erleben ins Zentrum und zeichnet ein vielschichtiges Bild der komplexen Leistungsfähigkeit von Musik im Film. -- Alexander Lederer (Dr. phil.), geb. 1991, lebt als freischaffender Wissenschaftler und Komponist in Kärnten, Österreich. Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf Film- und Medienmusik und ist verknüpft mit seinem eigenen musikalischen Schaffen.

    This book examines the relationship between narrative film and reality, as seen through the lens of on-screen classical concert performance. By investigating these scenes, wherein the performance of music is foregrounded in the narrative, Winters uncovers how concert performance reflexively articulates music's importance to the ontology of film. The book asserts that narrative film of a variety of aesthetic approaches and traditions is no mere copy of everyday reality, but constitutes its own filmic reality, and that the music heard in a film's underscore plays an important role in distinguishing film reality from the everyday. As a result, concert scenes are examined as sites for provocative interactions between these two realities, in which real-world musicians appear in fictional narratives, and an audience's suspension of disbelief is problematised. In blurring the musical experiences of onscreen observers and participants, these concert scenes also allegorize music's role in creating a shared subjectivity between film audience and character, and prompt Winters to propose a radically new vision of music's role in narrative cinema wherein musical underscore becomes part of a shared audio-visual space that may be just as accessible to the characters as the music they encounter in scenes of concert performance.

    Amanda Howell offers a new perspective on the contemporary pop score as the means by which masculinities not seen-or heard-before become a part of post-World War II American cinema. Popular Film Music and Masculinity in Action addresses itself to an eclectic mix of film, from Elvis and Travolta star vehicles to Bruckheimer-produced blockbuster action, including the work of musically-innovative directors, Melvin Van Peebles, Martin Scorsese, Gregg Araki, and Quentin Tarantino. Of particular interest is the way these films and their representations of masculinity are shaped by generic exchanges among contemporary music, music cultures, and film, combining American cinema's long-standing investment in violence-as-spectacle with similarly body-focused pleasures of contemporary youth music. Drawing on scholarship of popular music and the pop score as well as feminist film and media studies, Howell addresses an often neglected area of gender representation by considering cinematic masculinity as an audio-visual construction. Through her analyses of music's role in action and other film genres that share its investment in violence, she reveals the mechanisms by which the pop score has helped to reinvent screen gender-and gendered fictions of male empowerment-in contemporary screen entertainment.
