    In der mittelalterlichen Gedenkkultur kommt dem Grabmal eine wichtige Funktion als Erinnerungsmedium zu. Zwischen Früh- und Spätmittelalter lässt seine Entwicklung das Bedürfnis erkennen, den Toten und ihrem Leben eine signifikante Form zu geben und sie auf diese Weise präsent zu halten. Zwar wurde der besondere Zeichencharakter des Grabmals im Mittelalter nicht theoretisch reflektiert. Doch als Motiv begegnet es so zahlreich in der zeitgenössischen Literatur und Historiographie, dass diese Darstellungen implizite Rückschlüsse auf die Wahrnehmung seiner Substitutions- und Repräsentationsfunktion erlauben. Die Studie untersucht die Zeichenhaftigkeit erzählter Grabmäler erstmals systematisch und in komparatistischer Perspektive.

    Nachrufe ziehen nicht einfach einen resümierenden Schlussstrich unter ein soeben verloschenes Leben. Sie werden funktionalisiert als Medium der Kanonisierung, als Propagandainstrument für die unterschiedlichsten Interessen und als Forum für die subtile Kritik an einem Verstorbenen. Dem korrespondiert die immense Vielfalt an Genres des Nekrologs, gerade zwischen dem Beginn seiner Verbreitung durch den Druck um 1525 und seinem Wechsel ins Feuilleton im Vormärz. Besonderes Interesse können dabei Nachrufe auf Schriftsteller als Zeugnisse literarischer Selbstreferentialität beanspruchen. Obituaries always do more than sum up the life of someone who has just died. They fulfil various functions ranging from canonisation to propaganda, and they do so in the service of a huge variety of different interests. They also act as a forum for subtle criticism of the deceased person in question. Accordingly, necrologies come in an immense variety of genres, especially in the period extending from the beginning of their dissemination in the print medium around 1525 and their establishment in the feuilletons of the Vormärz period. Obituaries for writers are especially interesting for their high degree of self-referentiality and their significance as historical testimonies of changing concepts of authorship.     In der mittelalterlichen Gedenkkultur kommt dem Grabmal eine wichtige Funktion als Erinnerungsmedium zu. Zwischen Früh- und Spätmittelalter lässt seine Entwicklung das Bedürfnis erkennen, den Toten und ihrem Leben eine signifikante Form zu geben und sie auf diese Weise präsent zu halten. Zwar wurde der besondere Zeichencharakter des Grabmals im Mittelalter nicht theoretisch reflektiert. Doch als Motiv begegnet es so zahlreich in der zeitgenössischen Literatur und Historiographie, dass diese Darstellungen implizite Rückschlüsse auf die Wahrnehmung seiner Substitutions- und Repräsentationsfunktion erlauben. Die Studie untersucht die Zeichenhaftigkeit erzählter Grabmäler erstmals systematisch und in komparatistischer Perspektive.

    Nachrufe ziehen nicht einfach einen resümierenden Schlussstrich unter ein soeben verloschenes Leben. Sie werden funktionalisiert als Medium der Kanonisierung, als Propagandainstrument für die unterschiedlichsten Interessen und als Forum für die subtile Kritik an einem Verstorbenen. Dem korrespondiert die immense Vielfalt an Genres des Nekrologs, gerade zwischen dem Beginn seiner Verbreitung durch den Druck um 1525 und seinem Wechsel ins Feuilleton im Vormärz. Besonderes Interesse können dabei Nachrufe auf Schriftsteller als Zeugnisse literarischer Selbstreferentialität beanspruchen. Obituaries always do more than sum up the life of someone who has just died. They fulfil various functions ranging from canonisation to propaganda, and they do so in the service of a huge variety of different interests. They also act as a forum for subtle criticism of the deceased person in question. Accordingly, necrologies come in an immense variety of genres, especially in the period extending from the beginning of their dissemination in the print medium around 1525 and their establishment in the feuilletons of the Vormärz period. Obituaries for writers are especially interesting for their high degree of self-referentiality and their significance as historical testimonies of changing concepts of authorship.
