    Das Phänomen der Kriegserklärung stellt in verschiedener Hinsicht einen politisch und gesellschaftlich einschneidenden Vorgang dar und birgt zugleich, was seine Kontexte, Traditionen und Inhalte betrifft, zahlreiche offene Fragen. Die vorliegende Studie erkundet dieses Problem aus verschiedenen Perspektiven und erläutert die Entwicklungen der entsprechenden Begrifflichkeit in der europäischen Rechtswissenschaft der Frühen Neuzeit. Als ein Kernstück des Konzepts vom "gerechten Krieg" wurde die Kriegserklärung zum Gegenstand verschiedener Theoriebildungen, die in ihren Bezügen zur Scholastik und zur Systematisierung des modernen Völkerrechts nachvollzogen werden. Anhand ausgewählter Beispiele aus den Konflikten der europäischen Staatenwelt des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts wird die öffentliche Kriegslegitimation im Hinblick auf ihre diplomatische und zeremonielle Vermittlung sowie ihre rechtliche und politische Argumentation untersucht. Neben der aufsehenerregenden Proklamation durch Herolde bildete das Netzwerk der europäischen Gesandtschaften das entscheidende Forum für die staatliche Kriegsankündigung, deren äußere Begleitumstände detailliert beleuchtet werden. Die vielschichtigen Begründungen der in nahezu allen Fällen heftig umstrittenen Legitimität des Krieges appellierten an das Rechtsempfinden breiter Bevölkerungsschichten und lassen durch die Verwendung bestimmter Schlüsselbegriffe, die häufig von verschiedenen Konfliktparteien in vergleichbarer Weise gebraucht wurden, bemerkenswerte Gemeinsamkeiten erkennen. Eine Analyse publizistischer Reaktionen auf die zentralen Verlautbarungen umschreibt das Spektrum der zeitgenössischen Diskussionszusammenhänge und ermöglicht eine allgemeinere Bewertung der komplexen und kontrovers debattierten Vorgänge, die aufschlussreiche Einblicke in die Funktionsweisen der frühmodernen Öffentlichkeit erlauben.     John Carlos Rowe, considered one of the most eminent and progressive critics of American literature, has in recent years become instrumental in shaping the path of American studies. His latest book examines literary responses to U.S. imperialism from the late eighteenth century to the 1940s. Interpreting texts by Charles Brockden Brown, Poe, Melville, John Rollin Ridge, Twain, Henry Adams, Stephen Crane, W. E. B Du Bois, John Neihardt, Nick Black Elk, and Zora Neale Hurston, Rowe argues that U.S. literature has a long tradition of responding critically or contributing to our imperialist ventures. Following in the critical footsteps of Richard Slotkin and Edward Said, Literary Culture and U.S. Imperialism is particularly innovative in taking account of the public and cultural response to imperialism. In this sense it could not be more relevant to what is happening in the scholarship, and should be vital reading for scholars and students of American literature and culture

    This book analyzes the historical significance of rivaling concepts of world order in 20th century East Asia. Since the arrival of European imperialism in 19th century ? coupled with its different schools of political philosophy and international law ? China has struggled to combine ideas on national sovereignty, spatiality and hegemony in its quest of either imitating or replacing European norms of world order.     News under Fire: China's Propaganda against Japan in the English-Language Press, 1928-1941 is the first comprehensive study of China's efforts to establish an effective international propaganda system during the Sino-Japanese crisis. It explores how the weak Nationalist government managed to use its limited resources to compete with Japan in the international press. By retrieving the long neglected history of English-language papers published in the treaty ports, Shuge Wei reveals a multilayered and often chaotic English-language media environment in China, and demonstrates its vital importance in defending China's sovereignty. Chinese bilingual elites played an important role in linking the party-led propaganda system with the treaty-port press. Yet the development of propaganda institution did not foster the realization of individual ideals. As the Sino-Japanese crisis deepened, the war machine absorbed treaty-port journalists into the militarized propaganda system and dashed their hopes of maintaining a liberal information order. -- Back cover
