This two-volume work, Latin-into-Hebrew: Texts and Studies sheds new light on an under-investigated phenomenon of European medieval intellectual history: the transmission of knowledge and texts from Latin into Hebrew between the twelfth and the fifteenth century. Because medieval Jewish philosophy and science in Christian Europe drew mostly on Hebrew translations from Arabic, the significance of the input from the Christian majority culture has been neglected. Latin-into-Hebrew: Texts and Studies redresses the balance. It highlights the various phases of Latin-into-Hebrew translations and considers their disparity in time, place, and motivations. Special emphasis is put on the singular role of the translations of Latin medical and philosophical literature. Volume One: Studies , offers 18 studies and Volume Two: Texts in Contexts , includes editions and analyses of hitherto unpublished texts of medieval Latin-into-Hebrew translations. Both volumes are available separately or together as a set. This groundbreaking work is indispensable for any scholar interested in the history of medieval philosophic and scientific thought in Hebrew, Latin, and Arabic in relationship to the vicissitudes of Jewish-Christian relations

In the summer of 972 a group of Muslim brigands based in the south of France near La Garde-Freinet abducted the abbot of Cluny as he and his entourage crossed the Alps en route from Rome to Burgundy. Ultimately, the abbot was set free and returned home safely, but the audacity of this abduction outraged Christian leaders and galvanized the will of local lords. Shortly thereafter, Count William of Arles marshaled an army and succeeded in wiping out the Muslim stronghold. In Cluny and the Muslims of La Garde-Freinet, Scott G. Bruce uses this extraordinary incident, largely overlooked by contemporary scholars, to examine Christian perceptions of Islam in the Middle Ages. The monks of Cluny kept the tale of their abbot's abduction alive over the next century in hagiographical works and chronicles written to promote his sanctity. Bruce explores the telling and retelling of this story, focusing particularly on the representation of Islam in each account, and how that representation changed over time. The culminating figure in this study is Peter the Venerable, one of Europe's leading intellectuals and abbot of Cluny from 1122 to 1156. Remembered today largely for his views of Islam, Peter commissioned Latin translations of Muslim historical and devotional texts including the Qur’an. As Bruce shows, Peter’s thinking on Islam had its roots in the hagiographical tradition of the abduction at La Garde-Freinet. In fact, Peter drew from the stories as he crafted a "Muslim policy" relevant to the mid-twelfth century, a time of great anxiety about Islam in the aftermath of the failed Second Crusade. Compellingly written, Cluny and the Muslims of La Garde-Freinet provides us with an unparalleled opportunity to examine Christian perceptions of Islam in the Crusading era

Dante put Muhammad in one of the lowest circles of Hell. At the same time, the medieval Christian poet placed several Islamic philosophers much more honorably in Limbo. Furthermore, it has long been suggested that for much of the basic framework of the Divine Comedy Dante was indebted to apocryphal traditions about a "night journey" taken by Muhammad.Dante scholars have increasingly returned to the question of Islam to explore the often surprising encounters among religious traditions that the Middle Ages afforded. This collection of essays works through what was known of the Qur’an and of Islamic philosophy and science in Dante’s day and explores the bases for Dante’s images of Muhammad and Ali. It further compels us to look at key instances of engagement among Muslims, Jews, and Christians

"The figure of 'Mahomet' was widely known in early modern England. A grotesque version of the Prophet Muhammad, Mahomet was a product of vilification, caricature and misinformation placed at the centre of Christian conceptions of Islam. In Mythologies of the Prophet Muhammad in Early Modern English Culture Matthew Dimmock draws on an eclectic range of early modern sources - literary, historical, visual - to explore the nature and use of Mahomet in a period bounded by the beginnings of print and the early Enlightenment. This fabricated figure and his spurious biography were endlessly recycled, but also challenged and vindicated, and the tales the English told about him offer new perspectives on their sense of the world - its geographies and religions, near and far - and their place within it. This book explores the role played by Mahomet in the making of Englishness, and reflects on what this might reveal about England's present circumstances"--

This anthology examines the relationship between Dominicans and Jews from the beginnings of the religious order in the 13th century to the era of the Second World War. In addition to inquisitors and anti-Jewish sermonizers, the essays also present theologians and linguists from the Dominican order that engaged in lively cultural exchange with Jews and the Jewish tradition.

Edward Said's Orientalism, now more than fifty years old, has to be one of the most frequently cited books among academics in a wide range of disciplines, and the most frequently assigned book to undergraduates at colleges. One question less raised (or less has been done about the question) is How were the Orientalist writings of European scholars of Islam received among their Muslim contemporaries? An international team of contributors rectify this oversight in this volume On Cooks and Crooks : Aḥmad Fāris al-Shidyāq and the Orientalists in England and France (1840s-1850s) / Tarek el-Ariss -- Experiencing Orientalism : Amin al-Madani and the Sixth Oriental Congress, Leiden, 1883 / Kathryn Anne Schwartz -- The Reception of the Brill Encyclopedia of Islam : An Egyptian Debate on the Credibility of Orientalism / Said F. Hassen and Abdallah Omran -- Arabic Literature for the Colonizer and the Colonized : Ignaz Goldziher and Hungary's Eastern Politics 1878-1918 / Katalin Rac -- Islamic Modernism between Colonialism and Orientalism : Al-Manar's Intellectual Circles and Aligarh's Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College, 1898-1914 / Roy Bar-Sadeh -- The Frustrating Authority of Mr. Wells : Islam and the Politics of Orientalism in Republican China / Aaron Glasserman -- Orientalist Triangulations : Jewish Scholarship on Islam as a Response to Christian Europe / Susannah Heschel -- "Dieses wirklich westöstlichen Mannes" : The German-Jewish Orientalist Josef Horovitz in Germany, India, and Palestine / Ruchama Johnston-Bloom -- Scholarship on Islamic Archaeology Between Zionism and Arab Nationalist Movements / Mostafa Hussein -- A Muslim Convert to Christianity as an Orientalist in Europe : The Case of the Moroccan Franciscan Jean-Mohammed Abdeljalil / Mehdi Sajid
