"For more than five years the cartoonist Lynda Barry has been an associate professor in the University of Wisconsin-Madison art department and at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, teaching students from all majors, both graduate and undergraduate, how to make comics, how to be creative, how to not think. There is no academic lecture in this classroom. Doodling is enthusiastically encouraged. Making Comics is the follow-up to Barry's bestselling Syllabus and this time she shares all of her comics-making exercises. In a new hand drawn syllabus detailing her creative curriculum, Barry has students drawing themselves as monsters and superheroes, convincing students who think they can't draw that they can, and most important, encouraging them to understand that a daily journal can be anything so long as it is hand drawn."--

"The Routledge Companion to Digital Humanities and Art History offers a broad survey of cutting-edge intersections between digital technologies and the study of art history, museum practices, and cultural heritage. The volume focuses not only on new computational tools that have been developed for the study of artworks and their histories, but also debates the disciplinary opportunities and challenges that have emerged in response to the use of digital resources and methodologies. Chapters cover a wide range of technical and conceptual themes that define the current state of the field and outline strategies for future development. This book offers a timely perspective on trans-disciplinary developments that are reshaping art historical research, conservation, and teaching. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, historical theory, method and historiography, and research methods in education"--

In this volume curators, artists and scientists reflect on current forms of critical and solidary practice in and around 'white' cultural and educational institutions.

Preliminary Material -- Introduction -- Sex and the Virginals Gender and Keyboards around 1600 -- “Musick in the House, Musick in the Heart, and Musick also in Heaven”: The Harpsichord -- “Accomplishments, Accomplishments, Accomplishments”: The Piano-Forté -- “Glorious disability” The Piano and the Mid-Victorians -- Triumph and Oblivion The Piano after 1880 -- Conclusion -- References. This study analyzes representations of music in fiction, drama and poetry as well as normative texts in order to contribute to a gendered cultural history of domestic performance. From the Tudors to the First World War, playing the harpsichord or piano was an indispensable asset of any potential bride, and education manuals as well as courtship plots and love poems pay homage to this social function of music. The Gaze of the Listener charts the fundamental tension which determines all these texts: while music is warmly recommended in conduct books and provides standard metaphors like concord and harmony for virtuous love, a profound anxiety about its sensuous inarticulateness and implicit femininity unsettles all descriptions of actual music-making. Along with repressive plot lines, the privileging of visual perception over musical appreciation is the most telling indicator of this problem. The Gaze of the Listener is the first coherent account of this discourse and its historical continuity from the Elizabethan to the Edwardian period and provides a significant background for more narrowly focused research. Its uniquely wide database contextualizes numerous minor works with classics without limiting itself to the fringe phenomenon of musician novels. Including a fresh account of the novels of Jane Austen in their contemporary (rather than Victorian) context, the book is of interest to scholars and students in gender studies, English literature, cultural studies and musicology

The controversial British writer Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) is increasingly recognized as a major presence in early twentieth-century literature. This series of International Ford Madox Ford Studies was founded to reflect the recent resurgence of interest in him. Each volume is based upon a particular theme or issue; and relates aspects of Ford’s work, life, and contacts, to broader concerns of his time. This volume marks the seventieth anniversary of Ford’s death. Its focus is how his work engages with visual culture. He wrote criticism, biography, and reminiscences about the Pre-Raphaelite artists he’d been brought up amongst – Rossetti, Holman Hunt, and in particular his grandfather Ford Madox Brown. But his art-writing ranges much more widely, from Holbein to Cézanne and Matisse. Ford came to advocate Impressionism in literature. In London before the First World War he got to know avant-garde artists like Wyndham Lewis and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, and wrote about modern visual art movements, such as Futurism, Vorticism and Cubism. This work is discussed, not just in terms of what it tells us about art, but for what it reveals about the development of Ford’s own practice as a writer, and of his critical ideas. After the War he lived in France with two painters, first the Australian Stella Bowen, then the American Janice Biala, and moved in the Modernist art circles of Picasso, Juan Gris, Gertrude Stein and Brancusi. This volume includes sixteen new essays by critics and art historians on Ford’s engagement with the rapidly transforming visual cultures of his era, which break new ground discussing his writing about visual arts, and how it affected his fiction, poetry and criticism. Among numerous illustrations are several portraits of Ford by Janice Biala reproduced for the first time. Also published here for the first time are generous extracts from Biala’s marvelous letters from the 1930s about Ford

Patchwork: Seven Essays on Art and Literature presents in English translation a number of essays written by the Chinese literary scholar and novelist Qian Zhongshu (1910-1998). One of the great minds of the twentieth century, Qian, with his characteristic erudition and wit, addresses here aspects of the classical literary and artistic traditions of China. Better known, as a scholar, for his magisterial Limited Views: Essays on Ideas andamp; Letters (Guanzhui bian) (1979-80) and, as a novelist, for his Fortress Besieged (Weicheng) (1947), these essays, first written during the period 1948-83 and much revised over the years, allow readers insight into Qian’s abiding concern with “striking connections” between disparate literary, historical, and intellectual traditions, ancient and modern, Chinese and Western. Dr. Duncan Campbell was awarded the China Book Award for Special Contributions at the 23rd Beijing International Book Fair. Dr. Campbell received this award for his translation of this volume

Pinkster , H.W. Pleket , C.J. Ruijgh , D.M. Schenkeveld and P.H. Schrijvers. The myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt belongs to the great mythical cycles of the ancient world. P. Grossardt now offers the first complete presentation of all literary sources of the Calydonian hunt, as well as of other adventures of its central hero Meleagros. The sources have been arranged by genre and their literary context has been taken well into account. The author gives special attention to the development of different versions of the legend. Individual poets, Grossardt observes, used the myth of the Calydonian boar-hunt as a functional element in a larger context or in conscious contrast to older texts. In reconstructing the prehistory of the legend and its religious background, the author shows that the Calydonian boar-hunt myth originally had the function of an aition for the cult of Artemis Laphria and that it was taken up by the epic tradition long before Homer

This book introduces the reader to the literary work and to an understanding of its cultural background and its specific features. In doing so, it refers to two main traditions of Western culture: one of aesthetics and the theory of art and the other of literary theory. In our postmodern world, language and artistic creation (and above all literature as the art of language) occupy a special role in understanding the human world and become existential issues. A critical attitude requires knowledge of the relevant past in order to understand what we are today. The author presents key topics, ideas, and representatives of aesthetics, theory, and the interpretation of works of art in an historical perspective, in order to explain the Western tradition with constant attention to the present condition. Aesthetics, Theory and Interpretation of the Literary Work offers an outline of essential concepts and authors of aesthetics and theories of the literary work, presenting basic topics and ideas in their historical context and development, considering their relevance to the contemporary debate, and highlighting the specificity of the experience of the art work in our present world. The best way to approach a work of art is to enjoy it. In order to enjoy a literary work, we have to consider its correct context and its specific artistic qualities. The book is conceived as a general and enjoyable introduction to the experience of the work of art in Western culture

"By the late 1960s, the United States was in a pitched conflict in Vietnam, against a foreign enemy, and at home--between Americans for and against the war and the status quo. This powerful book showcases how American artists responded to the war, spanning the period from Lyndon B. Johnson's fateful decision to deploy US Marines to South Vietnam in 1965 to the fall of Saigon ten years later. Artists Respond brings together works by many of the most visionary and provocative artists of the period, including Asco, Chris Burden, Judy Chicago, Corita Kent, Leon Golub, David Hammons, Yoko Ono, and Nancy Spero. It explores how the moral urgency of the Vietnam War galvanized American artists in unprecedented ways, challenging them to reimagine the purpose and uses of art and compelling them to become politically engaged on other fronts, such as feminism and civil rights. The book presents an era in which artists struggled to synthesize the turbulent times and participated in a process of free and open questioning inherent to American civic life. Illustrated in color throughout, Artists Respond features a broad range of art, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, performance and body art, installation, documentary cinema and photography, and conceptualism"--
