    eng Ruins have for a long time captured the human imagination and, in one way or another, have been inscribed in a community’s memory, history, or lore. This long-standing tradition concerning ruins – be it real or imagined, ancient or modern ones – has resulted in a multitude of reflections and creative interpretations. The discourse on ruins, steeped in tradition as it is, offers a unique vantage point to reflect upon their actual meaning in various societies and disciplines by focusing on how they have been and still are often (mis)used and employed in contemporary debates as powerful symbols and motifs. Tackling questions related to the genealogies, functions, and interpretations of ruins in literary and artistic, political and legal, philosophical and sociological discourses, this book aims at moving the discussion beyond the level of case studies. The contributors examine the perception of ruins and the discourse on decay, destruction, and reconstruction from various disciplinary perspectives, referring to a multitude of ruin-related concepts such as ‘longing’, ‘memory’, ‘trauma’, and ‘identity’. ger Ruinen beflügeln seit langem die menschliche Vorstellungskraft und haben sich auf die eine oder andere Weise in das Gedächtnis, die Geschichte oder die Überlieferungen einer Gemeinschaft eingeschrieben. Diese lange Tradition rund um Ruinen – seien es reale oder erfundene, antike oder moderne – hat zu einer Vielzahl von Reflexionen und kreativen Interpretationen geführt. Der traditionsreiche Diskurs über Ruinen bietet einen einzigartigen Ausgangspunkt, um ihre tatsächliche Bedeutung in verschiedenen Gesellschaften und Disziplinen zu reflektieren, indem sie sich darauf konzentriert, wie sie oft (missbraucht) und in zeitgenössischen Debatten als machtvoll eingesetzt wurden und werden Symbole und Motive. Dieses Buch befasst sich mit Fragen zu Genealogien, Funktionen und Interpretationen von Ruinen in literarischen und künstlerischen, politischen und rechtlichen, philosophischen und soziologischen Diskursen und zielt darauf ab, die Diskussion über die Ebene von Fallstudien hinaus zu führen. Die Mitwirkenden untersuchen die Wahrnehmung von Ruinen und den Diskurs über Verfall, Zerstörung und Wiederaufbau aus unterschiedlichen disziplinären Perspektiven und beziehen sich dabei auf eine Vielzahl ruinenbezogener Konzepte wie „Sehnsucht“, „Erinnerung“, „Trauma“ und „Identität“.

Die Aneignung seiner philosophischen Konzepte und jener, die er gemeinsam mit Félix Guattari entwickelt hat, findet vor allem innerhalb des architekturtheoretischen Netzwerks der »Anyone Corporation« statt: In ihren Diskursen wimmelt es von glatten Räumen, organlosen Körpern, Rhizomen, Falten, abstrakten Maschinen und Diagrammen. Frederike Lausch zeigt auf, wie sich die »Anyone Corporation« durch die Bezugnahme auf Deleuze als intellektuelle Elite der Architekturdisziplin inszeniert und wie im Zuge der Entpolitisierung dessen Theorien die »Post-Criticality«-Bewegungen entstehen.

    A celebration of renowned sculptor and educator Kent Bloomer's work, examining the role of ornament in contemporary architecture and society0Best known for New York's Central Park luminaires (1982), the ornamentation at Rice University's Baker Hall in Houston (1997), and his work on Yale University's Bass Library entrance pavilion and Sterling Memorial Library stairwell entrance (2007), the sculptor Kent Bloomer (b. 1935) has not only influenced the discussion around ornament in contemporary architectural practice, but has inspired developments in a range of disciplines that include history, music, art, philosophy, and biology. With a retrospective look at Bloomer's work as a point of departure, scholars from a variety of different fields explore his contributions to the history of ornament as both a social and an artistic phenomenon.     The official catalog for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia consists of two volumes: the first is dedicated to the International Exhibition curated by Hashim Sarkis and the second presents the National Participations and Collateral Events. "How will we live together?" is as much a social and political question as a spatial one: rapidly changing social norms, growing political polarization, climate change and vast global inequalities are making us ask it more urgently than before. In parallel, the weakness of today's political models compels us to look at how architecture shapes inhabitation and community. The architects invited to participate in the Biennale Architettura 2021 are encouraged to include other professions and constituencies--artists, builders and craftspeople, but also politicians, journalists, social scientists and everyday citizens. In effect, the Biennale asserts the vital role of the architect as both cordial convener and custodian of the spatial contract.

Zugleich ist es eine kritische und um persönliche Erfahrungen angereicherte Auseinandersetzung mit der zeitgenössischen Architekturszene, die sich zwischen Gebäudedesign und Stadtarchitektur bewegt. Der Autor: Michael Wilkens arbeitete bei Paul Baumgarten und diplomierte bei O. M. Ungers. Er ist Professor für Architekturtheorie an der Universität Kassel und Mitbegründer der «Baufrösche Kassel»

    The eighteenth century struggled to define architecture as either an art or a science-the image of the architect as a grand figure who synthesizes all other disciplines within a single master plan emerged from this discourse. Immanuel Kant and Johann Wolfgang Goethe described the architect as their equal, a genius with godlike creativity. For writers from Descartes to Freud, architectural reasoning provided a method for critically examining consciousness. The architect, as philosophers liked to think of him, was obligated by the design and construction process to mediate between the abstract and the actual.In On the Ruins of Babel, Daniel Purdy traces this notion back to its wellspring. He surveys the volatile state of architectural theory in the Enlightenment, brought on by the newly emerged scientific critiques of Renaissance cosmology, then shows how German writers redeployed Renaissance terminology so that "harmony," "unity," "synthesis," "foundation," and "orderliness" became states of consciousness, rather than terms used to describe the built world. Purdy's distinctly new interpretation of German theory reveals how metaphors constitute interior life as an architectural space to be designed, constructed, renovated, or demolished. He elucidates the close affinity between Hegel's Romantic aesthetic of space and Daniel Libeskind's deconstruction of monumental architecture in Berlin's Jewish Museum.Through a careful reading of Walter Benjamin's writing on architecture as myth, Purdy details how classical architecture shaped Benjamin's modernist interpretations of urban life, particularly his elaboration on Freud's archaeology of the unconscious. Benjamin's essays on dreams and architecture turn the individualist sensibility of the Enlightenment into a collective and mythic identification between humans and buildings

Zwischen Schrecken und Faszination changierend, löste dieser Gefühlszustand eine erregende Grenzerfahrung aus: Reisende suchten sehnsuchtsvoll die Welt der Berge auf und projizierten ganz unterschiedliche Träume in die noch zu erschließende "wilde Natur" . Auf welche Weise hat das Erhabene die Architektur in den Alpen vom Beginn des Tourismus bis heute beeinflusst? To what extent has the sublime influenced architecture in the Alps, from the early days of tourism to the present?
