Dr. Elisabeth Jütten, Dr. Simon Meisch, Dr. Tina-Karen Pusse, Prof. Dr. Ruth Scoralick, Prof. Dr. Tanja van Hoorn.

"There is an ideological war of words waging in America, one that speaks to a new fundamentalism rising not just within the American public, but across other ideologically-torn nations around the globe as well. At its heart is climate skepticism, an ideological watershed that has become a core belief for millions of people despite a large scientific consensus supporting the science of anthropogenic climate change. While many scholars have examined the role of lobbyists and conservative think tanks in fueling the climate skepticism movement, there has not yet been a systematic analysis of why the narrative itself has resonated so powerfully with the public. Pulling from science and technology studies, narrative and discourse theory, and public policy, The Power of Narrative examines the strength of climate skepticism as a story, offering a thoughtful analysis and comparison of anti-climate science narratives over time and across geographic boundaries. This book provides fresh insight into the rhetorical and semantic properties on both sides of the climate change debate that preclude dialogue around climate science, and proposes a means for moving beyond ideological entrenchment through language mediation, further ethnographic study, and research-informed teaching. The Power of Narrative culminates in the revelation of a parallel between narratives about climate skepticism and those in other issue areas (e.g., gun rights, immigration, health crises), exposing a genetic meta-narrative of public distrust and isolation. Ultimately, The Power of Narrative is not a book about climate change in itself: it is, instead, a book about how our society understands and interacts with science, how a social narrative becomes ideology, and how we can move beyond personal and political dogma to arrive at a sense of collective rapprochement."

"Fears about our planet are fueling an epidemic of despair: adults worry about their children's future, while many young people honestly believe they have no future at all. As Elin Kelsey argues, this hopelessness - while an understandable reaction - is hampering our ability to address the very real problems we face. Hope Matters boldly breaks through the narrative of doom and gloom to show why evidence-based hope, not fear, is our most powerful tool for change. Through real-life examples that reveal the power of our mindsets to shape reality, the resilience of nature, and the transformative possibilities of individual and collective action, Kelsey demonstrates how we can build on positive trends to work toward a sustainable and just future."

    1. Introduction -- 2. Intersectional Ecologies -- 3. More-than-human Matters: Bioperformativity -- 4. Bodily Ecologies: Exposure, Participation and Immersion -- 5. Earth As Home: Local, Imagined, Material, Global. 6. Decolonised Ecologies: Performance Against the Anthropocene 7. Conclusion: Imagining the Future(s) This book addresses theatre’s contribution to the way we think about ecology, our relationship to the environment, and what it means to be human in the context of climate change. It offers a detailed study of the ways in which contemporary performance has critiqued and re-imagined everyday ecological relationships, in more just and equitable ways. The broad spectrum of ecologically-oriented theatre and performance included here, largely from the UK, US, Canada, Europe, and Mexico, have problematised, reframed, and upended the pervasive and reductive images of climate change that tend to dominate the ecological imagination. Taking an inclusive approach this book foregrounds marginalised perspectives and the multiple social and political forces that shape climate change and related ecological crises, framing understandings of the earth as home. Recent works by Fevered Sleep, Rimini Protokoll, Violeta Luna, Deke Weaver, Metis Arts, Lucy + Jorge Orta, as well as Indigenous activist movements such as NoDAPL and Idle No More, are described in detail
