    ger: Die vorliegende Arbeit beleuchtet, inwiefern die Ressentiments des Antisemitismus und antimodernen Antiamerikanismus begannen, sich auf dem Gebiet des damaligen Deutschen Bundes bzw. Deutschen Reiches zu überschneiden. Die Forschungsfrage beschränkt sich hierbei auf den Zeitraum von der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts bis zum Kriegseintritt der USA in den Ersten Weltkrieg. Mit der Methode der Quellenkritik bzw. der Diskursanalyse werden hierbei die Schriften des Ökonomen und Soziologen Werner Sombart (18631941) sowie der utopische Roman „Der Tunnel“ des deutschen Schriftstellers Bernhard Kellermann (18791951) ausgewertet und verglichen.Des Weiteren wird dargestellt, dass sich Antisemitismus in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts von einem religiös begründeten Vorwurf zu einem sozialen, rassischen und antimodernen Ressentiment weiterentwickelte und weltanschauliche Züge ausprägte. In dieser Zeit entwickelten sich analog hierzu ein antimoderner und zumeist antikapitalistischer Antiamerikanismus aus älteren stereotypische Ansichten über Ureinwohnerinnen und Ureinwohner sowie europäische Einwanderinnen und Einwanderer in Amerika.In den Ausführungen Sombarts werden sowohl Amerikaner als auch Juden unter dem Deckmantel der seriösen Wissenschaft mit sehr ähnlichen Eigenschaften beschrieben bzw. wird der Versuch unternommen, diese mit denselben Argumentationsweisen zu begründen. Juden in Amerika spielen trotz großer Einwanderungswellen vor 1914 dagegen eine eher untergeordnete Rolle. In Kellermanns technischer Utopie wird die jüdische Einwanderung in die USA in Form der Romanfigur des S. Woolf bzw. Samuel Wolfsohn thematisiert, welche mit fast allen antisemitischen und antiamerikanischen Stereotypen aufgeladen ist. Während Werner Sombart somit eine ideelle Nähe postuliert, steht bei Bernhard Kellermann die physische Verschmelzung aller Stereotype in einer Romanfigur im Vordergrund. eng: This thesis demonstrates how Anti-Semitism and antimodern Anti-Americanism start to intertwine in German speaking lands, that is more specifically the Deutscher Bund and the Deutsches Reich. To this end, the thesis analyses the period between the middle of the 19th century to the US war entry to the First World War. Hence the study engages with the works of the German economist and sociologist Werner Sombart (1863-1941) and the utopic novel “Der Tunnel” by the German author Bernhard Kellermann (1879-1951). In order to highlight the intricate link between both stereotypes in that time, the study employs historical methods, such as the historical critique of sources and discourse analysis. Besides highlighting their links, the study also draws attention to the developments of both stereotypes in the period in question. More concretely, Anti-Semitism evolved from a religious prejudice to a social, racist, and antimodern resentment, or to put it differently an ideology. Quite similarly Anti-Americanism having its roots in a certain perception of America as the land of indigenous people on the one hand and European immigrants on the other developed to an antimodern and anticapitalistic resentment. Werner Sombarts works evoke the impression of academic studies while attributing similar characteristics to Americans and Jews. In line with his pseudo-academic approach, he also ventures to justify these specific attributes. Despite of enormous waves of Jewish migration to the US, Jews play a minor role in Sombarts argumentation. This is in stark contrast to Kellermann who takes a different approach to American Jews in his novel “Der Tunnel”. The fictional character S. Woolf respectively Samuel Wolfsohn combines nearly every Anti-Semitic and Anti-American stereotype. Whereas Werner Sombart postulates close ideational ties between Jews and Americans by describing them with similar attributes, Kellermann relies on a physical fusion of both identities in a fictional character.

    ger: Die vorliegende Masterarbeit beschäftigt sich mit Repräsentationen von Amerika-, Männer- und Freiheitsbildern am Beispiel des Konzerns Harley-Davidson. Im gesellschaftlichen Diskurs existieren zahlreiche Bilder von und über die USA, Männlichkeit(en) und Freiheit. Der Motorradhersteller Harley-Davidson bedient sich des Bilderkanons, spielt und vermarktet ihn. Diese Bilder deuten auf gesellschaftliche Machtstrukturen und Ungleichheiten sowie auf sozio-kulturelle Dynamiken hin. Das Ziel dieser Masterarbeit ist es, der Frage nach der Repräsentation des Frontiermythos durch die Motorradmarke Harley-Davidson nachzugehen und den Frontiermythos zu dekonstruieren und sich mit dem Stellenwert und der Beziehung von Konzern und sozialen Akteur_innen auseinanderzusetzen. Wichtigste Grundlage im Erkenntnisgewinn sind der Gründungsmythos, der amerikanische Traum und der Frontiermythos. Insbesondere die Frontierfigur, als soziale und kulturelle Leitfigur kollektiver Identitätsvorstellungen der USA, ist in der kontextuellen Auseinandersetzung wichtig. Um die Forschungsfragen zu beantworten, wird ein qualitatives Methodenbündel (Interviews, Film- und Literaturanalysen, Beobachtungen) angewendet. Die kritische Aufarbeitung in Kombination mit dem theoretisch-historischen Hintergrund zeigt, dass die Überzeitlichkeit und Transnationalität der Frontierfigur sich mit der Bekanntheit Harley-Davidsons verbindet. Der Frontiermythos braucht keine Konstruktion wie die Vorstellung einer Nation: Es sind Ideale und Zuschreibungen, die ihn in eine transnationale Verständnisgemeinschaft einbetten. Im Sinne von Harley-Davidson verbinden sich der amerikanische Traum und der US-amerikanische Frontiermythos zu einem Narrativ von Consumo, ergo sum einem Narrativ, das der Amerikanisierung von Lebenswelten und Lebensvorstellungen entspricht und von dem Harley-Davidson ein Teil ist, den man durch den Erwerb eines solchen Motorrades, als ein neuer American frontier er-leben kann. eng: The following master thesis concerns itself with the representation of images of America, men and freedom by taking a closer look at the US-American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson and its way of transporting these images, plays with them and makes these images part of its merchandising campaign. Todays social discourse is full of images about the US, masculinity and freedom which lay open hidden social practices and cultural dynamics and hint at societal power relations and inequalities. The aim therefore is to shed light on the way Harley-Davidson represents the myth of the American frontier and to find answers to its relevance for the relationship between the company and its social agents.The search for insights into Harley-Davidsons representation(s) of the American frontier is based on three pillars serving as the foundation of this master thesis: the myth of the founding of the US, the American Dream and the myth of the American frontier. It especially is the American frontier in its undeniably central role as a social and cultural figure for establishing a collective US-American notion of identity.In order to find answers to the relevant research questions, different qualitative research methods, were used. By taking a critical stance on the generated research results and by analyzing the theoretical and historical background of the American frontier, it was possible to show that the timelessness and the transnationality of the frontier is strongly connected to Harley-Davidsons popularity. The frontier figure does not need a nation to exist. It is the various ideals and characteristics and traits being associated with the figure that embed it in a transnational understanding. Concerning Harley-Davidson, it was possible to demonstrate that the American Dream and the US-American myth of the frontier merge into a narrative of Consumo, ergo sum a narrative of the Americanization of peoples lives and their notions of life.

Debarchana Baruah offers a vocabulary to discuss these, using Mad Men as primary case study and supplementing the analysis with other examples from the US and around the world. She takes a fundamentally interdisciplinary approach to studying film and television, drawing from history, memory, and nostalgia discourses, and layering them with theories of intertextuality, paratexts, and actor-networks. The book's compositionist style invites discussion from scholars of various fields, as well as those who are simply fans of history or of Mad Men
