Filmproduzenten durchgeführten Überarbeitung und Neudefinition der Charaktere in Shakespeares Stück. eng: The present diploma thesis analyses two postcolonial rewritings and two cinematic adaptations of William Shakespeare?s late romance The Tempest. The main aim of this thesis is to compare these rewritings and adaptations to the pretext and to explore what has been recreated of Shakespeare?s work. The first part of the thesis gives an overview of Shakespeare?s life and his literary legacy and thus provides an insight into the creative work of one of the most famous and influential authors of all time. The second part introduces The Tempest (1611) and includes an analysis of the sources, the plot and the characters of the play in order to set the scene for the subsequent discussion of rewritings and adaptations. The following section provides a general overview of adaptations and then focuses on literary rewritings and cinematic adaptations in particular. This part is accompanied by a brief excursus about postcolonialism which is essential for the further analysis of the two postcolonial rewritings. The following two parts are dedicated to Aimé Césaire?s Une Tempête and David Malouf?s Blood Relations, two theatrical rewritings of Shakespeare's play. Respectively, both authors and their works are introduced, and, as both plays carry a postcolonial theme, a historical background of the play?s settings is provided in each case. The plays? plots and characters are then contrasted with the plot and characters of The Tempest. This analysis is solely based on the textual versions of all three plays and not on their stage performances. In the final two parts of this thesis the two cinematic adaptations of The Tempest, Prospero?s Books and Forbidden Planet are compared to Shakespeare?s pretext in a similar form as the two literary adaptations before. The main focus of all the aforementioned comparisons lies on the literary/cinematic realisation of Shakespeare?s pretext as well as on the playwrights?/filmmakers? revision of Shakespeare?s characters.

The theatre of the Italian Renaissance was directly inspired by the classical stage of Greece and Rome, and many have argued that the former imitated the latter without developing a new theatre tradition. In this book, Salvatore DiMaria investigates aspects of innovation that made Italian Renaissance stage a modern, original theatre in its own right. He provides important evidence for creative imitation at work by comparing sources and imitations – incuding Machiavelli’s Mandragola and Clizia, Cecchi’s Assiuolo, Groto’s Emilia, and Dolce’s Marianna – and highlighting source elements that these playwrights chose to adopt, modify, or omit entirely.DiMaria delves into how playwrights not only brought inventive new dramaturgical methods to the genre, but also incorporated significant aspects of the morals and aesthetic preferences familiar to contemporary spectators into their works. By proposing the theatre of the Italian Renaissance as a poetic window into the living realities of sixteenth-century Italy, he provides a fresh approach to reading the works of this period

This collection considers new phenomena emerging in a convergence environment from the perspective of adaptation studies. The contributions take the most prominent methods within the field to offer reconsiderations of theoretical concepts and practices in participatory culture, transmedia franchises, and new media adaptations. The authors discuss phenomena ranging from mash-ups of novels and YouTube cover songs to negotiations of authorial control and interpretative authority between media producers and fan communities to perspectives on the fictional and legal framework of brands and franchises. In this fashion, the collection expands the horizons of both adaptation and transmedia studies and provides reassessments of frequently discussed (BBC’s Sherlock or the LEGO franchise) and previously largely ignored phenomena (self-censorship in transnational franchises, mash-up novels, or YouTube cover videos)

For Shakespeare and Shakespearean adaptation, the global digital media environment is a "brave new world" of opportunity and revolution. In OuterSpeares: Shakespeare, Intermedia, and the Limits of Adaptation, noted scholars of Shakespeare and new media consider the ways in which various media affect how we understand Shakespeare and his works.Daniel Fischlin and his collaborators explore a wide selection of adaptations that occupy the space between and across traditional genres – what artist Dick Higgins calls "intermedia" – ranging from adaptations that use social networking, cloud computing, and mobile devices to the many handicrafts branded and sold in connection with the Bard. With essays on YouTube and iTunes, as well as radio, television, and film, OuterSpeares is the first book to examine the full spectrum of past and present adaptations, and one that offers a unique perspective on the transcultural and transdisciplinary aspects of Shakespeare in the contemporary world
