    A narrative is more than story; it is a window into the world it narrates. Sebastian Meixner's book explores the juncture between narrative and world in his study of Goethe's early works. In three different constellations he investigates relationships of exchange between literature and science that Goethe used to ground the modern narrative Kein Erzählen ohne Erkennen - keine Narratologie ohne Epistemologie. Jede Erzählung bildet nicht nur eine Geschichte ab, sondern weist permanent auf die Voraussetzungen des Erzählens hin, die im Zugriff auf die Erzählinhalte bestehen. Eine Narratologie, die nicht blind für diese Dimension des Erzählens ist, muss ihr Verhältnis zur Epistemologie ausloten. Dieses Verhältnis hat einen historischen Index, den die Arbeit im 18. Jahrhundert verortet. Sie legt in einem ersten Schritt eine historische Narratologie der Aufklärung vor, die zeitgenössische Überlegungen zum Erzählen (Lessing, Blanckenburg, Engel) mit zeitgenössischen Epistemologien (Baumgarten, Herder, Kant) konfrontiert. Das Verhältnis von Erzählen und Erkennen stellt sich exemplarisch in Goethes frühen Erzählungen. Die Arbeit untersucht deshalb in einem zweiten Schritt die Austauschbeziehungen zwischen Literatur und Naturwissenschaft: Geologie und Briefroman, Biologie und Bildungsroman sowie Optik und Novellensammlung bilden drei Konstellationen: Ihr gemeinsamer Nenner sind epistemologisch strukturierte Erzählverfahren, mit denen Goethe das moderne Erzählen begründet

    This is the first book-length study of the narratology of film music, and an indispensable resource for anyone researching or studying film music or film narratology. It surveys the so far piecemeal discussion of narratological concepts in film music studies, and tries to (cautiously) systematize them, and to expand and refine them with reference to ideas from general narratology and film narratology (including contributions from German-language literature less widely known in Anglophone scholarship).

     

    The book goes beyond the current focus of film music studies on the distinction between diegetic and nondiegetic music (music understood to be or not to be part of the storyworld of a film), and takes into account different levels of narration: from the extrafictional to ‘focalizations’ of subjectivity, and music’s many and complex movements between them.

By means of a logical theoretical framework drawing on both comparative literature and narratology, Pieter Borghart proposes a more nuanced definition of naturalism than those traditionally found in the existing literature.     When listeners talk about their listening experiences, they often refer to music as if it were a narrative. But can music actually tell a story? Can music be narrative? Traditionally, narrativity is associated with verbal and visual texts, and the mere possibility of musical narrativity is highly debated. In this study, Vincent Meelberg demonstrates that music can indeed be narrative, and that the study of musical narrativity can be very productive. Moreover, Meelberg even makes a stronger claim by contending that contemporary music, too, can be narrative. More specifically, Meelberg suggests considering contemporary musical narratives as metanarratives, i.e. narratives that tell the story of the process of narrativization. Wanneer luisteraars over hun luisterervaringen praten, refereren ze vaak aan muziek alsof het een verhaal is. Maar kan muziek wel een verhaal vertellen? Kan muziek narratief zijn? Traditioneel wordt narrativiteit geassocieerd met verbale en visuele teksten en wordt er betwijfeld of een muzikale variant zelfs maar kan bestaan. In deze studie beargumenteert Vincent Meelberg dat muziek wel degelijk een verhaal kan vertellen, en dat de bestudering van muzikale narrativiteit zeer productief is. Meer specifiek stelt Meelberg voor om hedendaagse muzikale verhalen te beschouwen als metaverhalen, dus als verhalen die het verhaal van het proces van narrativizering vertellen.

    Marina Grishakova belongs to the younger generation scholars of the Tartu-Moscow school of semiotics. Her book is part of a semio-narratological tradition of a single author or a single work research that tackles issues of wider theoretical import: applicability of the concept of “modeling” in the humanities, theory of mimesis and the function of experimental literature in (post)modernist culture. By drawing on Y. Lotman’s conception of artistic models, the book adopts the semiotic perspective on modeling as an open-ended heuristic process underlying the logic of discovery and creative thinking. The book discusses the models of time and memory in modernist culture (Nietzsche’s and Bergson’s philosophy of time, Minkowski’s research on the psychopathological types of temporality) and their relevance to Nabokov’s fiction; popular-scientific notions of serialism and the fourth dimension; thematizations of the observer in modernist philosophy and arts; visual “prostheses” and “machines” (Eco), particularly the “camera vision” metaphor, its relation to Bergson’s notion of automatism and the popular idea of the criminal use of hypnosis. Vision is thematized also as a means of seduction and noncoercive control. Even before Foucault, Baudrillard and other critics of modernity, Nabokov noticed that advertising, political propaganda and erotic seduction alike employ implicit forms of suggestion. The book revises Rorty’s dilemma of “autonomy” and “solidarity” as applied to Nabokov’s work and offers new readings. It considers categories of narrative poetics as forms of cultural encoding that broaden and transform reader’s modes of perception and sense-making. Micro-models active in certain contexts or in the works of certain authors function as mobile interfaces between individual sensibilities and complex cultural chrono- and spatio-types where time and space take on conceptual meaning.     This book argues that time travel fiction is a narrative "laboratory," a setting for thought experiments in which essential theoretical questions about storytelling—and, by extension, about the philosophy of temporality, history, and subjectivity—are represented in the form of literal devices and plots.Drawing on physics, philosophy, narrative theory, psychoanalysis, and film theory, the book links innovations in time travel fiction to specific shifts in the popularization of science, from evolutionary biology in the late 1800s, through relativity and quantum physics in the mid–20th century, to more recent "multiverse" cosmologies. Wittenberg shows how increasing awareness of new scientific models leads to surprising innovations in the literary "time machine," which evolves from a "vehicle" used chiefly for sociopolitical commentary into a psychological and narratological device capable of exploring with great sophistication the temporal structure and significance of subjects, viewpoints, and historical events.The book covers work by well-known time travel writers such as H. G. Wells, Edward Bellamy, Robert Heinlein, Samuel Delany, and Harlan Ellison, as well as pulp fiction writers of the 1920s through the 1940s, popular and avant-garde postwar science fiction, television shows such as "The Twilight Zone" and "Star Trek," andcurrent cinema. Obwohl widerrechtliche Aneignungen schon auf den ersten Blick zu den zentralen Themen einer ›Wikingerliteratur‹ zählen, wurden diese Verbrechen von der Sagaforschung bisher kaum beachtet. Sie funktionieren jedoch nicht nur als Einfallstore in die Erzählwelt der Isländersagas und deren narrativen Verfahren, sondern gewähren auch Blicke auf die zugehörigen Wertvorstellungen. Die Isländersagas erzählen von den ersten Generationen, die nach der Besiedelung Islands gemeinsam eine neue Gesellschaft formen. Um deren wichtigste Maßstäbe, Ansehen und Ehre, zu erreichen und zu stabilisieren, müssen sämtliche Angriffe auf Person und Besitz angemessen vergolten werden. Heimlicher Diebstahl und offener Raub fordern die Siedlergesellschaft heraus, eine Neubewertung von Status und Ansehen aller Parteien anzustellen. Diese Verbrechen funktionieren damit als Kristallisationspunkte der Handlungsstränge und lassen die Eigenschaften der erzählten Welt hervortreten.     Unzuverlässiges Erzählen wird in der Narratologie hochfrequent diskutiert – dennoch besteht immer noch kein Konsens darüber, wie das Konzept definiert werden soll und welche Spezifika bei seiner Anwendung beachtet werden müssen. Durch die unübersichtliche Forschungssituation und die fehlenden Kriterien für einen Vergleich der Theorien verliert das Unzuverlässigkeitskonzept seine analytische Nützlichkeit.Um diesen Problemen zu begegnen, liefert diese Arbeit erstmals einen ausführlichen, systematisch-vergleichenden Überblick über bisherige Unzuverlässigkeitstheorien. Dabei werden bestehende Definitionen unzuverlässigen Erzählens gegenübergestellt, definitorische Unklarheiten behoben, Typologien analysiert und die spezifischen Anwendungsbedingungen untersucht. Schließlich wird unter Rekurs auf existierende Unzuverlässigkeitstheorien, definitionstheoretische Kriterien und literaturwissenschaftliche Nützlichkeitserwägungen eine robuste Explikation unzuverlässigen Erzählens vorgeschlagen.Der vorliegende Band dient so zum einen als Nachschlagewerk zur narratologischen Unzuverlässigkeitsdebatte, zum anderen liefert er ein gut handhabbares und heuristisch nützliches Analyseinstrumentarium für den Phänomenbereich unzuverlässigen Erzählens.

    Ein zentrales Merkmal gegenwärtiger Formen von Authentizität besteht darin, dass die Wahrheit des Dargestellten durch die Wahrhaftigkeit der Darstellung ersetzt wird. Nicht mehr der Inhalt garantiert eine empirische, ontologische, ästhetische oder moralische Qualität, vielmehr muss durch eine kontextuelle Konstruktion oder eine Erzählung die Zuschreibung des Merkmals 'authentisch' angeregt werden. Damit verschiebt sich auch das Erkenntnisinteresse: Wurde Authentizität in der Forschung bisher überwiegend als Aspekt der Ästhetik diskutiert, rückt nun die erzählerische Dimension des Phänomens in den Fokus. Sichtbar wird so die Verschiebung von einem referentiellen zu einem relationalen Authentizitäts-Begriff. Die Anordnung der Beiträge folgt den Aspekten Produktion (Strategien, die Authentisches erzählen), Narration (Formen authentischen Erzählens) und Rezeption (als Zuschreibungsphänomen in einem Authentizitäts-Pakt). Die Artikel geben einen Überblick über ein breites Spektrum unterschiedlicher Authentizitäts-Aspekte in verschiedenen Epochen, Künsten und Gattungen und der Band als Ganzes liefert einen ersten erzähltheoretischen Beitrag zur Authentizitäts-Forschung

    At times of crisis and revolution such as ours, diagnoses of crucial junctures and ruptures - 'turning points' - in the continuous flow of history are more prevalent than ever. Analysing literary, cinematic and other narratives, the volume seeks to understand the meanings conveyed by different concepts of turning points, the alternative concepts to which they are opposed when used to explain historical change, and those contexts in which they are unmasked as false and over-simplifying constructions. Literature and film in particular stress the importance of turning points as a sensemaking device (as part of a character's or a community's cultural memory), while at the same time unfolding the constructive and hence relative character of turning points. Offering complex reflections on the notion of turning points, literary and filmic narratives are thus of particular interest to the present volume

    People of all times and in all cultures have produced and consumed fiction in a variety of forms, not only for entertainment, but also to spread knowledge, religious or political beliefs. Furthermore, fiction has taken part in reflecting and shaping the cultural identity of communities as well as the identity of individuals. This volume aims to explore the concept and the use of fiction from different epochs, in different cultures and in different forms, both ancient and more recent. It covers a broad field of interests, from ancient literature, art, philosophy and theater to Bollywood productions, television series and modern electronic media. Twenty-three scholars from ten countries and from different areas and fields of interests in the Humanities assembled in Stockholm on a conference in August 2012 to exchange views on "Fiction in Global Contexts". Junge und erfahrene Wissenschaftler(innen) aus verschiedenen Ländern Europas und den USA erlauben einen Einblick in ihre laufenden Forschungsarbeiten zur Artusliteratur. Am Beispiel deutscher, französischer, portugiesischer, niederländischer und englischer Artusromane verhandeln sie zentrale Probleme aus den Bereichen der Gender Studies, der Spiritualitätsforschung, Literatursoziologie und Gewaltforschung, der Narratologie und Medienkulturwissenschaft. Gefragt wird u.a. nach der semantischen Aufladungen von Lichteffekten in der Literatur, nach der Kodierung von Sinnlosigkeit und Paradoxie, nach der Signalfunktion von Namen und nach dem Verhältnis von Gewalt und Spiritualität.     By introducing a multifaceted approach to epic geography, the editors of the volume wish to provide a critical assessment of spatial perception, of its repercussions on shaping narrative as well as of its discursive traits and cultural contexts. Taking the genre-specific boundaries of Greco-Roman epic poetry as a case in point, a team of international scholars examines issues that lie at the heart of modern criticism on human geography. Modern and ancient discourse on space representations revolves around the nation-shaping force of geography, the gendered dynamics of landscapes, the topography of isolation and integration, the politics of imperialism, globalization, environmentalism as well as the power of language and narrative to turn space into place. One of the major aims of the volume is to show that the world of the Classics is not just the origin, but the essence of current debates on spatial constructions and reconstructions
