Rather than theoretical or abstract, above all else, this monograph endeavors to serve as a practical guide, a handbook for helping us navigate a dark terrain. It neither presumes to examine the sources of evil nor suggest radical cures. These pages strive only to continue the process of naming the signs of individual evil that we might recognize these persons before they inflict even more damage. Scott Peck says it best. “If evil were easy to recognize, identify, and manage, there would be no need for this book.” Of course, he was referring to his own pioneering treatise; given the realities of our day, the need remains as great as ever

    Notes:

Biographical note: Dirk Schulz is a postdoctoral researcher at the English Department of the University of Cologne, where he teaches courses on anglophone literature and culture, and is editorial assistant of »Gender Forum. An Internet Journal for Gender Studies«. His fields of interest include literary and cultural studies, gender and sexuality studies, semiotics, the gothic, popular culture and critical theory

Main description: »To define is to limit«, Lord Henry states, and Mrs. Dalloway »would not say of anyone [...] that they were this or that«. Why then are the respective novels mostly read - and in recent adaptations rewritten - in denial of their genuinely ambiguous designs? Bringing the two literary classics together for the first time, their shared concerns regarding textual and sexual identities are revealed. Challenging an established critical record commonly related to Oscar Wilde's and Virginia Woolf's own mythologised biographies, this study underscores the value of constantly rethinking labels by liberating the texts from the limiting grip of categorical readings

Main description: This description of the reception accorded to Oscar Wilde's comedies in Germany from 1902 to 1992 is based on 90 translations and/or adaptations and 200 stage productions. Central aspects discussed are the initial failure of the comedies (in conjunction with the identification of the first translator of the "Importance of Being Earnest", F.P. Greve), André Gide's and Carl Hagemann's enormous influence on their reception, the triumphs of actress Adele Sandrock with these comedies in the 20s and 30s, the ideological exploitation of Wilde by the National Socialists, and the ironical criticism of the Nazis to be found in Ernst Sander's version of "The Importance of Being Earnest". The study demonstrates the significance of implicit scenic realizations in the minds of the translators and the effect these have had on reception in the theatre

The most significant resource for any researcher wishing to understand the finer details of Oscar Wilde’s remarkable career, the "Oscar Wilde and His Circle" archive at the University of California, Los Angeles houses the world’s largest collection of materials relating to the life and work of the gifted Irish writer. Wilde Discoveries brings together thirteen studies based on research done in this archive that span the course of Wilde’s work and shed light on previously neglected aspects of Wilde’s lively and varied professional and personal life. This volume offers fresh approaches to well-known works such as The Picture of Dorian Gray while paying serious attention to his lesser known writings and activities, including his earliest attempts at emulating the English Romantics, his editing of Woman’s World, and his fascination with anarchism. A detailed introduction by the volume editor ties the essays together and illustrates the distinctive evolution of research on this great writer’s extraordinary career

The most significant resource for any researcher wishing to understand the finer details of Oscar Wilde’s remarkable career, the "Oscar Wilde and His Circle" archive at the University of California, Los Angeles houses the world's largest collection of materials relating to the life and work of the gifted Irish writer. Wilde Discoveries brings together thirteen studies based on research done in this archive that span the course of Wilde's work and shed light on previously neglected aspects of Wilde's lively and varied professional and personal life. This volume offers fresh approaches to well-known works such as 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' while paying serious attention to his lesser known writings and activities, including his earliest attempts at emulating the English Romantics, his editing of 'Woman's World', and his fascination with anarchism. A detailed introduction by the volume editor ties the essays together and illustrates the distinctive evolution of research on this great writer's extraordinary career
