    This volume presents papers of the conference “Components of Translation-oriented Language Competence and Basic Translation Competencies” which took place at the Department of Translation Studies of the University of Innsbruck on 22 and 23 September 2017. The programme of the conference comprised a variety of different topics of the field of translation teaching as, for example, the role of the students’ mother tongue or A language in translator education, foreign language training for translators, and topics in general and specialised translation including instruments for teaching literary and legal translation. - Der vorliegende Band ist das Ergebnis der Tagung Bausteine translationsorientierter Sprachkompetenz und translatorischer Basiskompetenzen, die am 22. und 23. September 2017 am Institut für Translationswissenschaft der Universität Innsbruck stattfand. Im Rahmen der Tagung wurde ein breites Spektrum translationsdidaktischer Themen angesprochen, wie die Rolle der Mutter- bzw. Bildungssprache in der Übersetzerausbildung, die Fremdsprachenausbildung für Übersetzer sowie allgemeine und fachsprachliche translatorische Fragestellungen, darunter didaktische Instrumente in der Literatur- und Rechtsübersetzung.

    Dieser interdisziplinäre Open Access-Band beschäftigt sich mit den vielfältigen Konzepten und Methoden des Übersetzens als zentraler und ubiquitärer Kulturtechnik der Frühen Neuzeit (1450–1800). In fünfzehn Einzelstudien werden gesellschaftliche Leitvorstellungen, Wahrnehmungsmuster und Kommunikationsformen erforscht, die seit dem 15. Jahrhundert durch Praktiken des Übersetzens etabliert werden und bis in die Gegenwart von prägender Bedeutung sind. Behandelt werden etwa jiddische und kymrische Bibelüber­setzungen, tamilische und zapotekische Missionstexte sowie französische und arabische Kartenmaterialien. This interdisciplinary open-access collection addresses the multifarious concepts and methods of translation as a central and ubiquitous cultural technique of the Early Modern period (1450–1800). It features fifteen studies on the guiding principles, perception patterns, and communication forms that have taken root in society since the fifteenth century through the practices of translation and are still of defining importance today. The research spectrum encompasses such diverse topics as Yiddish and Cymric translations of the Bible, Tamil and Zapotec mission texts, and French and Arabic cartographic material.

    Im Zuge der Historisierung von Theorie ist die Rolle von Übersetzungen sowie die vermittelnde Rolle der Übersetzer*innen bisher nur am Rande berücksichtigt worden. Doch für die Rezeption, Internationalisierung und Kanonisierung von Theorie spielen diese eine entscheidende Rolle, weshalb sich dieser Band der Geschichte der Theorie in Hinblick auf ihre Übersetzungen nähert. Die Brisanz, die Theorie in Deutschland, Frankreich und den USA von Anfang der 1960er bis Ende der 1990er Jahre entfalten konnte, verdankt sich nicht nur der Mobilität ihrer Protagonist*innen, sondern auch der Verfügbarkeit von Übersetzungen, in denen Theorie von einer Sprache in die andere übergeht, dabei ‚anschlussfähig‘ wird. Theorieübersetzungsgeschichte rückt die Arbeit von Übersetzer*innen in den Blick, die wechselseitige Beziehung von Übersetzungstheorie und poststrukturalistisch-dekonstruktivem Denken sowie ein spezifisches Verständnis von Übersetzung, das mit dem Anspruch verbunden ist, im Verlauf gegenwärtiger Debatten zu intervenieren. ; ger

    The volume is a collection of papers that deal with the issue of translation quality from a number of perspectives. It addresses the quality of human translation and machine translation, of pragmatic and literary translation, of translations done by students and by professional translators. Quality is not merely looked at from a linguistic point of view, but the wider context of QA in the translation workflow also gets ample attention. The authors take an inductive approach: the papers are based on the analysis of translation data and/or on hands-on experience. The book provides a bird's eye view of the crucial quality issues, the close collaboration between academics and industry professionals safeguarding attention for quality in the 'real world'. The corpus architecture is developed for empirical studies of translations, and beyond those for the study of texts which are inter-lingually comparable, particularly texts of similar registers. The compiled corpus, CroCo, is a resource for research and is, with some copyright restrictions, accessible to other research projects. Most of the research was undertaken as part of a DFG-Project into linguistic properties of translations. Fundamentally, this research project was a corpus-based investigation into the language pair English-German. The long-term goal is a contribution to the study of translation as a contact variety, and beyond this to language comparison and language contact more generally with the language pair English - German as our object languages. This goal implies a thorough interest in possible specific properties of translations, and beyond this in an empirical translation theory.The methodology developed is not restricted to the traditional exclusively system-based comparison of earlier days, where real-text excerpts or constructed examples are used as mere illustrations of assumptions and claims, but instead implements an empirical research strategy involving structured data (the sub-corpora and their relationships to each other, annotated and aligned on various theoretically motivated levels of representation), the formation of hypotheses and their operationalizations, statistics on the data, critical examinations of their significance, and interpretation against the background of system-based comparisons and other independent sources of explanation for the phenomena observed. Further applications of the resource developed in computational linguistics are outlined and evaluated

    Die frühesten Übersetzungen aus dem Englischen ins Französische sind bisher Gegenstand nur weniger Studien geworden, die überwiegend älteren Datums sind. In diesem Band werden Strategien und Verfahren der französischen Übersetzer aus dem Englischen anhand zweier ausführlicher empirischer Analysen früher geographischer Texte, La navigation du capitaine Martin Forbisher Anglois (1578) von Nicolas Pithou und Merveilleux et estrange rapport, toutesfois fidèle, des commoditez qui se trouvent en Virginia (1590) von Charles de l'Escluse, detailliert untersucht. Darüber hinaus fragt die Studie nach den Gründen für das späte Einsetzen der Übersetzungstätigkeit in dieser Übersetzungsrichtung und bietet Übersichten zu den übersetzten Texten englischer Autoren aus dem Englischen und Lateinischen.Die Arbeit liefert nicht nur Erkenntnisse für die Übersetzungsgeschichte, sondern informiert auch über Aspekte der französischen und englischen Sprachgeschichte im 16. und 17.
