    Die 'Poetik der Sinne' ist für Rilkes Spätwerk zentral und unterstreicht seine Bedeutung für die Lyrik der Moderne. Ausgehend vom Bild der 'fünffingrigen Hand' der Sinne im Aufsatz "Ur-Geräusch" (1919) erschließt die Arbeit erstmals die poetologische Argumentation des Autors und weist sie in der dichterischen Praxis nach. Rilkes Poetik folgt weder einer Hierarchie der Sinne noch synästhetischen Konzepten; vielmehr halten alle fünf Sinne auf eine Grenze des sinnlich Erfahrbaren zu. Das Sehen, werkgeschichtlich bislang leitend, wird im Spätwerk nicht durch das Hören als neuem Leitsinn abgelöst, sondern bleibt in umgewerteter Weise für das poetische Raumkonzept unabdingbar.     Main description: This study examines classic modern texts – elements of a 'visionary' poetology –, which on the one hand connect with an idealistic poetics of memory, and on the other create a new tradition.     Addressing all readers who value the beauty of language, Anna Balakian examines the work of five twentieth-century poets--Yeats, Valry, Rilke, Stevens, and Guilln--to show how the linguistic richness of the symbolist tradition continued well into the modern period. These writers, all of whom learned the poetry of language from Mallarm, compensated for the disappearance of metaphysical inclinations in early twentieth-century poetry by instituting a poetic fiction. Balakian finds the immersion of the "I" and its altered reflection in the work of art to be a common feature of their poetry, and explores how they replaced the conventional meaning of signifiers grown stale, such as the abused word "poet," which became musician, artist, dancer, acrobat, mime, tapestry weaver, rider of the earth and the skies.

Challenged by the heightening of evidentiality promised by avant-garde painting, early cinema, and linguistic and psychological imagery, authors like Hofmannsthal, Rilke, and Musil developed a language of visionary boundary-transgression that remained fully aware of its resources while at the same time appropriating the other medium for its expressive purposes.     Main description: The consummate musicality of the verse in Rilke's "Sonnets to Orpheus" stems from a blend of sophisticated craftmanship and poetological originality, as this study sets out to demonstrate. A detailed analysis of the text forms the basis for a discussion of a variety of topics that have traditionally divided literary critics: the unity of the cycle, the use of the sonnet form, the morphological Keimzellenprinzip (nucleus principle), Rilke's contribution to the discussion on the role of the subject in modern literature, his concept of the literary work, his 'abstractionist' approach, his view of temporality, and his reinterpretation of the figure of Orpheus. The findings cast a radically new light on a number of frequently rehearsed topoi in Rilke interpretation.     In Lyric Orientations, Hannah Vandegrift Eldridge explores the power of lyric poetry to stir the social and emotional lives of human beings in the face of the ineffable nature of our mortality. She focuses on two German-speaking masters of lyric prose and poetry: Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843) and Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926). While Hölderlin and Rilke are stylistically very different, each believes in the power of poetic language to orient us as social beings in contexts that otherwise can be alienating. They likewise share the conviction that such alienation cannot be overcome once and for all in any universal event. Both argue that to deny the uncertainty created by the absence of any such event (or to deny the alienation itself) is likewise to deny the particularly human condition of uncertainty and mortality. By drawing on the work of Stanley Cavell, who explores how language in all its formal aspects actually enables us to engage meaningfully with the world, Eldridge challenges poststructuralist scholarship, which stresses the limitations—even the failure—of language in the face of reality. Eldridge provides detailed readings of Hölderlin and Rilke and positions them in a broader narrative of modernity that helps make sense of their difficult and occasionally contradictory self-characterizations. Her account of the orienting and engaging capabilities of language reconciles the extraordinarily ambitious claims that Hölderlin and Rilke make for poetry—that it can create political communities, that it can change how humans relate to death, and that it can unite the sensual and intellectual components of human subjectivity—and the often difficult, fragmented, or hermetic nature of their individual poems
