    Antiziganism is a common phenomenon on the big screen. To examine this issue from various perspectives, acclaimed scholars and junior researchers, filmmakers and human rights activists, both Roma and non-Roma, gathered in Berlin in 2018 and presented their research output, shared personal testimonies and discussed films at the international conference “Antigypsyism and Film“. The present bilingual volume is a documentation of the conference proceedings. It contains academic articles and essays as well as interviews with filmmakers grouped in four thematic sections: antigypsyism in film, the question of ethics, strategies of subversion and antigypsyism in comparison to other forms of racism.; Antiziganismus ist Normalität auf der großen Leinwand. Um dieses Problem aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu untersuchen, versammelten sich Wissenschaftler und Nachwuchsforscher, Filmemacher und Menschenrechtsaktivisten – Roma wie Nicht-Roma – 2018 in Berlin zu einer internationalen Tagung: “Antiziganismus und Film“. Sie präsentierten ihre Forschungsergebnisse, teilten persönliche Zeugnisse und diskutierten Filme. Der vorliegende zweisprachige Band dokumentiert diese in ihrer Form bisher einzigartige Tagung.     The book uses interviews, informal conversations and extended observation at EDL events to critically reflect on the gap between the movement's public image and activists' own understandings of it. It details how activists construct the EDL, and themselves, as 'not racist, not violent, just no longer silent' inter alia through the exclusion of Muslims as a possible object of racism on the grounds that they are a religiously not racially defined group. In contrast activists perceive themselves to be 'second-class citizens', disadvantaged and discriminated by a 'two-tier' justice system that privileges the rights of 'others'. This failure to recognise themselves as a privileged white majority explains why ostensibly intimidating EDL street demonstrations marked by racist chanting and nationalistic flag waving are understood by activists as standing 'loud and proud'; the only way of 'being heard' in a political system governed by a politics of silencing. Unlike most studies of 'far right' movements, this book focuses not on the EDL as an organisation - its origins, ideology, strategic repertoire and effectiveness - but on the individuals who constitute the movement. Its ethnographic approach challenges stereotypes and allows insight into the emotional as well as political dimension of activism. At the same time, the book recognises and discusses the complex political and ethical issues of conducting close-up social research with 'distasteful' groups.

    Engaging with Borges, Turing, Claude Shannon, Hitchcock and Marx, this book tracks computational capital to reveal the lineages of capitalised power as it has restructured representation, consciousness and survival in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

    Drawing on a number of paradigmatic works of art, the book explores the motif of ‘gypsy’ child-theft and its visualisations. The analytical focus is on the colour coding of bodies in texts and images and their racialised/anti-gypsy uses. Offering a comprehensive survey of the motif’s adaptations to different visual media, the author elaborates on its multiple layers of meaning and functions. The analysis starts with a critical review of Cervantes’ tale “La gitanilla”, moving through seventeenth-century Dutch history painting to take a cursory look at nineteenth-century printed images, and end up with an annotated filmography of 49 cinematic works. Anhand einer Reihe paradigmatischer Kunstwerke untersucht das Buch das Motiv des „Zigeuner“-Kinderraubs und dessen Visualisierungen. Im Vordergrund steht die Analyse der Farbkodierung von Körpern und deren rassistische bzw. antiziganistische Verwendung. Die Autorin nimmt eine Bestandsaufnahme der Anpassungen des Motivs in verschiedenen visuellen Medien vor und arbeitet seine vielschichtigen Bedeutungen und Funktionen heraus. Die Analyse beginnt mit einer kritischen Betrachtung von Cervantes Erzählung „La gitanilla“. Weitere inhaltliche Schwerpunkte sind die holländischen Historienmalereien des 17. Jahrhunderts und die neu aufkommende Drucktechnik im 19. Jahrhundert. Den Abschluss bildet eine annotierte Filmografie, die 49 Werke umfasst.

Die utopischen Beiträge erscheinen ungetrübt als paradox, naiv und gleichzeitig politisch radikal, strategisch durchdacht. Einseitige Forschungsperspektiven, die Migrantinnen entweder zu »Heldinnen« verklären oder sie in der Rolle als »Opfer« festzurren, werden hier gleichzeitig problematisiert und irritiert.

Die Autorin untersucht ihn dagegen als gesamtgesellschaftliches und in seinen Erscheinungsformen variables Phänomen. Die Studie verbindet Rassismuskonzepte (Hall, Miles, Balibar) mit Bourdieus Theorie sozialer Ungleichheit zu einem Analysemodell des Rassismus als flexibler symbolischer Ressource. Der empirische Teil zeigt an Gruppendiskussionen mit Akademikern und Facharbeitern, wie diese Ressource in Form spezifischer Argumentationsfiguren kommuniziert wird.

Aufbauend auf Material, das sie über 17 Jahre gesammelt hat, legt Urmila Goel in ihrer Ethnografie drei Mosaike dieses virtuellen Raums. Sie beschreibt, wie die unterschiedlichen Teile des Portals (Artikel, Forum, Gästebuch, etc.) genutzt wurden und zeichnet die Entwicklungsschritte des Community-Portals von seiner Gründung bis zum Umzug ins Web 2.0 nach. Dabei analysiert sie rassismuskritisch, wie das »Indernet« zu einem Raum der natio-ethno-kulturellen (Mehrfach-)Zugehörigkeit wurde und welche Ausschlüsse damit einhergingen.

    This book concerns the ways in which many different types of nationalism, chauvinism and racism penetrated into musical thought in the interwar period, and how the leading artistic personalities of that period reacted to these ideologies. The concept of "nationalism" is understood broadly in this book and covers the entire spectrum of its positive and negative aspects. The topics listed in the book’s title have been discussed on the example of selected four countries, significant with respect to population and territory and representing different social-political systems: Germany (mostly after 1933), Italy, Poland (after 1926) and Great Britain.     Visual media have played a key role in the genesis of antigypsyism since the early modern period. This interdisciplinary anthology examines the central motifs and semantics of "Gypsy" images in various forms of representation such as literature, visual art, photography, postcards, opera, theatre, comics, film and computer games. Particular attention is paid to connecting lines and interrelationships. The contributions uncover the content-related, temporal, geographical and media-specific manifestations of one of the most powerful stereotypes in European cultural history. To this day, antigypsyist imaginations have a negative impact on the positioning of Sinti and Roma in European societies. Visuelle Medien spielen seit der Frühen Neuzeit eine Schlüsselrolle für die Genese des Antiziganismus. Der interdisziplinär angelegte Sammelband untersucht die zentralen Motive und Semantiken von „Zigeuner“-Bildern in unterschiedlichen Repräsentationsformen wie Literatur, bildender Kunst, Fotografie, Postkarten, Oper, Theater, Comic, Film oder Computerspielen. Dabei werden insbesondere Verbindungslinien und Wechselbeziehungen in den Blick genommen. Stéphane Maffli analysiert die Literatursprache und Erzählweise von fünf Texten aus der deutschsprachigen Schweiz, die Einblick in Migration geben. Er zeigt, wie sich bei der Lektüre die Möglichkeit der Identifikation mit den Figuren eröffnet, und wie die Rolle der Migrationserfahrung für die Identitätsbildung vorstellbar wird. Die Berücksichtigung gesellschaftlicher und kultureller Prozesse erweitert die literaturwissenschaftliche Perspektive um eine soziologische Dimension.

Diese Fragen beantwortet Michael Höttemann durch die Entwicklung des Begriffs der Abwehr als sozialer Handlung theoretisch und illustriert sie anhand einer Analyse von Interviews sowie von Gruppendiskussionen zur Debatte über Günther Grass' Gedicht »Was gesagt werden muss«.
