Loosely based on the book of the same name, writers David Shields and his collaborator and fellow-combatant, Caleb Powell, decide to put their friendship on the line by spending four days together in a cabin in the Cascades. The men barely make it down the driveway before an argument breaks out. On the drive to the cabin, things degenerate even further, as they variously debate the idea of life versus art...On the first day of shooting, an actual fight breaks out over what and who can be talked about in the course of the film with the director getting dragged into the mix along the way. As the three men, and their respective egos, circle and jab at each other, you wait for someone to get punched in the face. The gladiatorial aspects of the film are only a beginning, as the weekend continues, something altogether more surprising happens — genuine and real communication

Marking the centenary on 27 October 2014 of Dylan Thomas's birth, this drama written by acclaimed screenwriter Andrew Davies, explores the final days of this famous poet, known for his wild, hard-drinking lifestyle as well as his brilliance. The film begins as Thomas arrives in New York where he planned to rehearse, write and party, before travelling to Hollywood to write an opera with the equally famous composer Stravinsky. But what might have been a triumphant new path in his career turned into a requiem for a man whose life had spiralled out of control and Thomas died in a smog-ridden New York in 1953 at the age of just 39. Moving between the present in New York and the poet's past in Wales, this drama explores how Dylan Thomas's experiences had made his life virtually untenable and examines the part his destructive personality played in his own demise

In a London psychiatric hospital, an enigmatic young man claims, among other things, to be the son of an exiled African dictator - a story that becomes unnervingly plausible. In a fiery and suspenseful debate, his doctor and consultant clash over the patient's diagnosis and treatment. What ensues is an incendiary tale of race, madness and a Darwinian power struggle at the heart of a dying NHS. Filmed on location in London, this dynamic and often very funny adaptation of Joe Penhall's award-winning play retains the music, lighting and sound team from the original stage production, which premiered in April 2000. Blue/Orange is based on Joe Penhall's award winning play of the same name

A small New York apartment was a favorite location for an O. Henry story. He is reported to have said, "I would like to live a lifetime in each street in New York. Every house has a drama in it." Here, just around the corner from the turn of the century, in Greenwich Village, we find two young struggling artists who've become the best of friends only to have one stricken with deadly Pneumonia. And she is convinced that when the last leaf falls from the ivy outside her window, that she will go too. "The lonesomest thing in all the world is a soul when it is making ready to go on its mysterious, far journey." And yet against the howling wind, as the rain beats at the window, one small ray of hope bravely clings on against the storm

Warriors, Witches, Whores: Women in Israeli Cinema' is a feminist study of Israel?s film industry and the changes that have occurred since the 1990s. Working in feminist film theory, the book adopts a cultural studies approach, considering the creation of a female-centered and thematically feminist film culture in light of structural and ideological shifts in Israeli society. Author Rachel S. Harris situates these changes in dialogue with the cinematic history that preceded them and the ongoing social inequalities that perpetuate women?s marginalization within Israeli society

"This book chronicles the rise and the development of postcolonial agency since Africa's encounter with Western modernity through African and African diaspora literature and film. Using African and African diasporic imaginaries (creative writings, autobiographies, polemical writings, and filmic media) the author shows how African subjects have resisted enslavement and colonial domination over the past centuries, and how they have sought to reshape "global modernity". Authors and film makers whose works are examined in detail include Olaudah Equiano, William Sheppard, Haile Gerima, Wole Soyinka, Dani Kouyaté, Chris Abani, Chimamanda Adichie, Leila Aboulela, Imbolo Mbue, Alain Mabanckou, Abdourahman Waberi, Marie NDiaye, and Fatou Diome. Providing a critical study of nativism, hybridity and post-hybrid conjunctive consciousness, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of African and African diasporic literature, history, and cultural studies"--...

From Struwwelpeter to Peter Rabbit, from Alice to Bilbo—this collection of essays shows how the classics of children’s literature have been transformed across languages, genres, and diverse media forms. This book argues that translation regularly involves transmediation—the telling of a story across media and vice versa—and that transmediation is a specific form of translation. Beyond the classic examples, the book also takes the reader on a worldwide tour, and examines, among other things, the role of Soviet science fiction in North Korea, the ethical uses of Lego Star Wars in a Brazilian context, and the history of Latin translation in children’s literature. Bringing together scholars from more than a dozen countries and language backgrounds, these cross-disciplinary essays focus on regularly overlooked transmediation practices and terminology, such as book cover art, trans-sensory storytelling, écart, enfreakment, foreignizing domestication, and intra-cultural transformation

This volume offers an exploration of interwar women's fictions and their complex intersections with cinema. Interrogating a range of writings, from newspapers and magazines to middlebrow and modernist fictions, the book takes the reader through the diverse print and storytelling media that women constructed around interwar film-going, arguing that literary forms came to constitute an intermedial gendered cinema culture at this time. Using detailed case studies, this book draws upon new archival research, industrial analysis and close textual readings to consider cinema's place in the fictions and critical writings of major literary figures such as Winifred Holtby, Stella Gibbons, Elizabeth Bowen, Jean Rhys, Elinor Glyn, C. A. Lejeune and Iris Barry. Through the lens of feminist film historiography, Off to the Pictures presents a bold new view of interwar cinema culture, read through the creative reflections of the women who experienced it

"Few classical stories are as exciting as that of Jason and the Golden Fleece. The stirring tale of an adventurer who was also the son of a disenfranchised king and a daring sea-captain has resonated through the ages, rumbling and echoing like the clashing rocks which almost pulverised the Argo. The themes of the legend are perennial, and endlessly engaging. Even while it tells of a quest to the ends of the earth, of the villainous usurper King Pelias, of dragons' teeth, of the loss of Hylas (beloved of Hercules) ravished by nymphs, and of Jason's passionate liaison with the sorceress Medea, it speaks to us of more: of gender and sexuality; of heroism and lost integrity; of powerful gods and terrifying monsters; of identity and otherness; of exploration and exploitation. The Argonauts are emblems of collective heroism, yet also of the emptiness of glory. From Pindar to J. W. Waterhouse, Apollonius of Rhodes to Ray Harryhausen, and Robert Graves to Mary Zimmerman, the Argonaut myth has inspired later interpretations as rich and diverse as the ancient versions. Helen Lovatt here unravels the various strands of the tangled narrative and its numerous and fascinating afterlives in a book that will both inform and endlessly entertain all those who love classical literature and myth."

"The essays collected in Fate and Prognostication in the Chinese Literary Imagination deal with the philosophical, psychological, gender and cultural issues in the Chinese conception of fate as represented in literary texts and films, with a focus placed on human efforts to solve the riddles of fate prediction. Viewed in this light, the collected essays unfold a meandering landscape of the popular imaginary in Chinese beliefs and customs. The chapters in this book represent concerted efforts in research originated from a project conducted at the International Consortium for Research in the Humanities at the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany."--

From Solidarity to Schisms is the first collection to expand discussions of the effects the events of 11 September 2001 and their aftermath have had on fiction and film beyond an exclusively US-based focus. The essays brought together here go beyond critiquing the US to examine the cultural shifts taking place in fiction and cinema from places such as Britain, France, Germany, Australia, Pakistan, Canada, Israel, and Iran. From these many sites of production, the works discussed in this collection illustrate more precisely how 9/11 was “global” without succumbing to neat categorizations, such as “us vs. them,” “East vs. West,” “Christianity vs. Islam,” and so on. From Solidarity to Schisms is an important supplement to the US-centered cultural and critical production addressing 9/11, providing researchers and teachers alike with resources and contexts that will allow them to broaden their own examinations of novels and films by Americans and about the US. It also provides a valuable resource for students and scholars of contemporary global history and international politics who are interested in approaching 9/11, terrorism and counter-terrorism, and related topics from a cultural standpoint
