    “Language can be this incredibly forceful material—there’s something about it where if you can

    strip away its history, get to the materiality of it, it can rip into you like claws” (Hill in Vischer

    1995, 11). This arresting image by media artist Gary Hill evokes the nearly physical force of

    language to hold recipients in its grip. That power seems to lie in the material of language itself,

    which, with a certain rawness, may captivate or touch, pounce on, or even harm its addressee.

    Hill’s choice of words is revealing: ‘rip into’ suggests not only a metaphorical emotional pull but

    also the literal physicality of linguistic attack. It is no coincidence that the statement comes from

    a media artist, since media artworks often use language to produce a strong sensorial stimulus.

    Media artworks not only manipulate language as a material in itself, but they also manipulate the

    viewer’s perceptual channels. The guises and effects of language as artistic material are the topic

    of this book, The Literariness of Media Art.

    Why do we play games and why do we play them on computers? Digital information technology has recently entered as a new tool in this co-evolution, and will probably have the strongest impact on shaping the human mind in the near future. A common effort from the humanities, the sciences, art and technology is necessary to understand this ongoing co- evolutionary process. Interactivity is a key for understanding the new relationships formed by humans with social robots as well as interactive environments and wearables underlying this process.     Das Bauhaus wurde 1919 von dem Architekten Walter Gropius gegründet. Die Hochschule für Gestaltung war ein Spiegel ihrer Zeit, aber auch eine »Brutstätte« neuer Ideen. Probleme und Lösungsansätze, welche die gesamte Kunstwelt bewegten, wurden am Bauhaus von Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, László Moholy-Nagy und anderen aufgenommen und weitergeführt. Zu den wichtigsten Anliegen der Bauhaus-Jahre gehörte die Suche nach einer Verbindung der Künste. Synästhetische Verknüpfungen von Farben und Klängen gehörten ebenso zu den gängigen Methoden wie der Versuch, der Malerei eine zeitliche Ebene zu geben, die als musikalisch verstanden wurde. Die Musik diente als Ordnung schaffendes Prinzip. Das Black Mountain College (1933-1957) entwickelte die Visionen des Bauhauses nach dessen Schließung weiter: Die Konzepte der europäischen Moderne erlebten - etwa durch Josef Albers und John Cage - eine neue Deutung unter amerikanischen Bedingungen. Diese Studie zeigt das Bauhaus und das Black Mountain College als Laboratorien zur Erarbeitung interdisziplinärer Fragestellungen, die die wechselhaften Verhältnisse zwischen den Künsten im 20. Jahrhundert prägten - und bis in die zeitgenössische Klanglandschaft nachwirken.

    Automated facial recognition algorithms are increasingly intervening in society. This book offers a unique analysis of these algorithms from a critical visual culture studies perspective. The first part of this study examines the example of an early facial recognition algorithm called »eigenface« and traces a history of the merging of statistics and vision. The second part addresses contemporary artistic engagements with facial recognition technology in the work of Thomas Ruff, Zach Blas, and Trevor Paglen. This book argues that we must take a closer look at the technology of automated facial recognition and claims that its forms of representation are embedded with visual politics. Die Choreographien entgrenzen sich in Richtung Bewegungs- und Sprachstudie, Installation und Tableau vivant. Die Studie betrachtet diese Merkmale erstmals unter dem Gesichtspunkt eines erweiterten Bildbegriffs. Dabei werden Themen wie die Projektion, die Blicklenkung, die Pose, der Affekt und die Duration ausgearbeitet. This is the first book-length study of this largely forgotten experiment: It documents the radicality of Piazza virtuale's approach, the novel programme ideas and the technical innovations.     Der »CREMASTER Cycle« von Matthew Barney erweist sich in der Ausstellungssituation als ein medial hybrides Konstrukt aus Filmen, Objekten, Fotos und Zeichnungen. Erst im Wandern des Blicks zwischen der Diachronie der Film-Narration und der Synchronie der Ausstellungssituation entsteht der Cycle - der Betrachter selbst vollendet das Werk mit seinem Weg durch die Ausstellung. Der »CREMASTER« bleibt work in progress.Beiträge aus Kunst-, Film- und Theaterwissenschaft wagen in diesem Band aus je disziplinärer Perspektive den Blick auf Formen der Medienkonvergenz in Barneys Arbeit. Im Zentrum stehen die Prozesse der mäandernden Wahrnehmung. Beiträge zu anderen Arbeiten und Performances von Barney bieten Ausblicke auf weitere Aspekte seiner Ästhetik In exhibition settings, the »CREMASTER Cycle« by Matthew Barney turns out to be a medial hybrid, constructed from films, objects, photos, and drawings. The Cycle is only created by a gaze wandering around between the diachronicity of the film-narration and the synchronicity of the exhibition setting - the viewer completes the work himself with his path through the exhibition. »CREMASTER« remains a work in progress. In this volume, contributions from art, film, and theater studies boldly give their respective disciplinary perspectives on forms of media convergence in Barney' s work. They focus on processes of meandering perception. Contributions on other works and performances by Barney provide outlooks on further aspects of his aesthetics
