Rellstab analysiert auf der Basis eines von Erving Goffman geprägten Interaktionsverständnisses Interaktionen in »Deutsch als Fremdsprache«-Klassenzimmern. Dabei zeigt er, welche Ressourcen Lehrkräfte und Schüler*innen in der Interaktion einsetzen, wie sie aushandeln, welche Sprachen legitim, welche illegitim sind, und wie sie dabei Identitäten und Normen re- und dekonstruieren.

    Für die Orang Rimba auf Sumatra ist der Regenwald eine Welt, die nicht nur von Tieren, sondern auch von Göttern und Geistern bevölkert ist und ihre eigenen Gesetze besitzt. Er bildet die Lebenswelt der Orang Rimba, die durch Abholzung und Plantagenwirtschaft bedroht ist. Das Buch basiert auf einer 15 monatigen ethnologischen Feldforschung (zwischen 2003 und 2005) der Autorin bei diesen Waldbewohnern. Sie untersucht, wie durch Interaktionen mit verschiedenen Akteuren, vor allem dem indonesischen Staat und Nicht-Regierungsorganisationen – sie alle haben Interesse am Wald als wirtschaftliche Ressource oder Schutzgebiet –, verschiedene Identitäten der Orang Rimba hervorgebracht werden. Die Arbeit setzt sich detailliert mit der Selbstdarstellung der Orang Rimba auseinander und vergleicht sie mit verschiedenen Fremdperspektiven externer Akteure auf diese nicht sesshafte Gruppe. Diskurse über Wald als gefährliche Wildnis oder Schutzgebiet bestimmen auch die Zukunft und die Handlungsfähigkeit der Orang Rimba, sei es als marginalisierte Minderheit oder selbstbestimmte Regenwaldbewohner.

    This volume puts an emphasis on the question how children themselves experience and manage migration and by means of which they construct an identity for themselves which takes into account their experiences from both their places of origin and their host societies. What role does the cultural background of the society of origin on the one hand and the strategies of integration found in the host society on the other play in the creation of identity and of a concept of home, origin and belonging? How do children express processes of cultural orientation and integration (music, media, fashion, style) and what role do peer groups and social milieus play in this regard? How do migrant children experience xenophobia and a lack of acceptance on the side of the host society and how do they counter-balance such experiences? The approach taken is both comparative and interdisciplinary, the contributors having different theoretical and methodological backgrounds, the contributions dealing with different social and cultural settings both with regard to place of origin and host society.

    Spatial and identity research operates with differentiations and relations. These are particularly useful heuristic tools when examining border regions where social and geopolitical demarcations diverge. Applying this approach, the authors of this volume investigate spatial and identity constructions in cross-border contexts as they appear in everyday, institutional and media practices. The results are discussed with a keen eye for obliquely aligned spaces and identities and relinked to governmental issues of normalization and subjectivation.     Die Auseinandersetzung mit weiblichen Körpern im TV ist durch einen kritischen Tenor geprägt, der implizit oder explizit den Medieninhalt als konstituierend für dessen Rezeption zugrunde legt. Vernachlässigt wird dabei, dass Medientexte weniger Normierungen liefern, als vielmehr gesellschaftlich vorhandene Normalisierungen widerspiegeln. Lena Schurzmann-Leder zeigt anhand ihrer Analysen und Gruppendiskussionen mit jugendlichen Zuschauerinnen von Germany's Next Topmodel, dass das weibliche Aussehen in den eigenen Lebenswelten zwar eine zentrale Rolle spielt, in der Sendung aber nur peripher interessiert. Hochbedeutsam sind stattdessen Leistungsethiken im Radius von Leistung-Lernen-Können und disziplinierte, kontextangemessene Selbsthervorbringung.

It also brought forth a new discipline, visual culture studies, and a hotly contested debate unfolded between art history and visual culture studies over the interpretation of visual culture, whose impact can still be felt today. In this first comparative study Susanne von Falkenhausen reveals the concepts of seeing as scholarly act that underwrite these competing approaches to visuality and society, along with the agendas of identity politics that motivate them. In close readings of key texts spanning from the early 20th century to the present the author crosses expertly between American, German, and British versions of art history, cultural studies, aesthetics, and film studies.

Anhand empirischer Erhebungen in Deutschland, Frankreich, Belgien und Luxemburg untersuchen sie Raum- und Identitätskonstruktionen in grenzüberschreitenden Bezügen, wie sie sich in alltäglichen, institutionellen und medialen Praktiken manifestieren.     Luxembourg - international financial center, European administrative center, destination country for immigration? This empirical study provides insights about a society that has hitherto largely eluded scientific investigation and observes the processes of identity construction in globalised conditions. The interdisciplinary team of authors exposes the processes of subjective appropriations and institutional attributions at work in the fields of languages, spaces, perceptions of self and others as well as everyday cultures, and identifies for the first time socio-cultural milieus in the Grand Duchy. The findings of the three-year research project uncover the ambivalences and dynamics of a multicultural and multilingual society.

    Identity: Fragments, Frankness is a rich and powerful essay on the notion of identity and on how it operates in our contemporary world. In contrast to the various attempts to cling to established identities or to associate identity with dubious agendas, Nancy shows that an identity is always open to alterity and its transformations.Against cynical initiatives that seek to instrumentalize the question of identity in an attempt to manipulate sentiment against immigration, Nancy problematizes anew the notions of identity, nation, and national identity. He seeks to show that there is never a given identity but always an open process of identification that retains an exposure to difference. Thus identity can never operate as a self-identical subject, such as "the French."Ultimately, for Nancy, one does not have an identity but has to become one. One can never return to a self-same identity but can only seek to locate oneself within difference and singularity. Nancy shows the impasse of a certain conception of identity that he calls the "identity of the identifiable," which refers to some permanent, given, substantial identity. In opposition to such identity, Nancy offers the identity of whatever or whoever invents itself in an open process of exposure to others and internal difference. Hence, an identity is never given but "makes itself by seeking and inventing itself." One does not have an identity, but is an identity.Identity is an act, not a state.This important book will provide much-needed philosophical clarification of a complex and strategic notion at the center of many current events and discussions

With these words, Ralph Waldo Emerson confronts a dilemma that illuminates the formation of American individualism: to evolve and become fully human requires a heightened engagement with history. Americans, Emerson argues, must realize history’s chronology in themselves—because their own minds and bodies are its evolving record. Whereas scholarship has tended to minimize the mystical underpinnings of Emerson’s notion of the self, his depictions of "the metempsychosis of nature" reveal deep roots in mystical traditions from Hinduism and Buddhism to Platonism and Christian esotericism. Christina Lammer zeichnet die beiden Aspekte als zentrale Themenkomplexe systematisch nach und bietet neben einer Einführung in das Gesamtwerk auch neue Sichtweisen auf die Hauptwerke der Autorin, aktuelle Debatten der intersektional ausgerichteten Narratologie und literarische Komplexe wie dem Labyrinth.     The Vikings Reimagined explores the changing perception of Norse and Viking cultures across different cultural forms, and the complex legacy of the Vikings in the present day. Bringing together experts in literature, history and heritage engagement, this highly interdisciplinary collection aims to reconsider the impact of the discipline of Old Norse Viking Studies outside the academy and to broaden our understanding of the ways in which the material and textual remains of the Viking Age are given new meanings in the present. The diverse collection draws attention to the many roles that the Vikings play across contemporary culture: from the importance of Viking tourism, to the role of Norse sub-cultures in the formation of local and international identities. Together these collected essays challenge the academy to rethink its engagement with popular reiterations of the Vikings and to reassess the position afforded to ‘reception’ within the discipline
