Dans et hors de la langue, triviale ou spirituelle, aimée ou haïe, anglaise ou française, exil ou patrie... Le travail de Beckett, dans ses pièces théâtrales, télévisuelles et radiophoniques, est le travail d’un poète sur la matière des mots, dénudés de leurs sens par trop utilisés, travail musical et rythmique, d’une exigence qui dépasse la frontière des langues dans leur labilité. Le théâtre beckettien donne à écouter une présence (peut-être celle du « mot perdu »), la présence d’une absence qui n’en finirait plus… Ainsi le néologisme de « spirivial » – qui provient (tout comme son dérivé, la « spirivialité ») de la jonction (ou bien encore du va-et-vient) entre le mot « trivial » et le mot « spirituel » – permet-il de désigner le passage ou bien encore l’anamorphose au cœur du processus de destruction-reconstruction, propre au langage beckettien. Il peut s’agir, par extension, du « lieu-non-lieu » de la Question ou du mystère qui palpite au centre d’un mouvement paradoxal-spiroïdal, involutif-évolutif, à la fois creuset et matrice de la « matière-idée »

Central to Samuel Beckett’s literature is a wilful voice which insists on speaking and being heard. Beckett described it as “a truly exterior voice”, and in the plays he separates voice from the body and turns it into an audible character. Previous critical studies have explored the enigma of this voice, its identity, source and location, but little attention has been given to the voice as protagonist. This volume traces the genesis of the performative voice in the early prose and charts its trajectory throughout the dramatic oeuvre in a readable narrative which generates fresh insights into some of Beckett’s most remarkable and impenetrable plays. It examines the use of embodied and acousmatic – ‘out of body’ – voices in the different media of theatre, radio and television; the treatment of voice in relation to music, image and movement; and the ‘shifting threshold’ between the written and spoken word. The analysis comprises a detailed study of dramatic speech and technical aspects of sound reproduction, making it relevant for all scholars and students with an interest in textual and performance issues in Beckett’s drama

Le terme idiotie est créé au début du 19e siècle pour remplacer celui d’ idiotisme qui désignait à la fois l’absence de culture et la stupidité au sens médical. Pourtant l’origine grecque introduit une nuance : idios signifie ce qui est spécial, propre ou original. De là, dire que l’idiot, de Dostoïevski notamment, appartient à la catégorie des mélancoliques, êtres exceptionnels et artistes selon Aristote dans le Problème XXX, encourage une nouvelle définition du terme. Cet Éloge de l’idiotie observe pour la première fois de près le phénomène de l’idiotie romanesque en Occident à travers le 20e siècle. À la différence du 19e, le personnage idiot ne transmet pas seulement un thème mais bien une nouvelle façon de s’exprimer et d’écrire. Mettant en dialogue les termes idiotie et rhétorique , cette étude offre un examen méticuleux de quatre textes choisis et réunis de façon inédite: Nadja de Breton, Le Bruit et la Fureur de Faulkner, L’Innommable de Beckett et Marelle de Cortázar. Nadja, Benjy, l’Innommable et la Maga manifestent une ignorance et une singularité qui font d’eux ces idiots persécutés du fait de leur perception « anormale » de la réalité. Tout s’inverse lorsque leurs propos étranges se mêlent à la langue originale de chacun des livres. Proche de l’écrivain, l’idiot est à son tour métaphore de la rhétorique à l’œuvre, la figure idéale pour remettre en question toute prétendue intelligence ou raison au profit de l’éloge d’une forme de naïveté, une bienheureuse éthique de l’idiotie

Impotence and Making in Samuel Beckett’s Trilogy is situated at the intersection of the aesthetic, socio-political and theoretical construction of being and not-being; it is about making the self, making others, and making words, set against being unable to make the self, others and words. Concentrating on Samuel Beckett’s prose works, though also focusing on some of his dramatic works, the book aims to problematize the categories of ‘impotence’ and ‘making’ by showing Beckett’s quasi-deconstructive treatment of them as seen through his narrators’ images of being unable to make self, other creatures and words (impotence), along with his narrators’ images of making self, other creatures and words (making). By demonstrating that his narrators, while being impotent, nevertheless gestate and produce new entities from their bodies in the same way as a mother does a child, the book aims to reveal how, for Beckett’s narrators, creativity in its widest sense is envisaged

Molloy est sans doute l’une des œuvres beckettiennes qui a suscité le plus d’interprétations variées et parfois même contradictoires. Modalités po(ï)étiques de configuration textuelle : le cas de « Molloy » de Samuel Beckett prend comme point de départ cet état de fait, l’interroge et propose que la texture du roman en est largement responsable. En tant qu’artefact langagier, Molloy exploite exemplairement les possibilités contextuelles de signification de la langue française, aussi bien linguistiquement que littérairement. L’ouvrage procède à une série de micro-lectures qui réévaluent à fond la fonction textuelle de ce qu’on convient d’appeler les « jeux de mots » de Molloy . Il montre que les manières dont ces « jeux » sont inscrits dans leurs environnements restreints et étendus favorisent l’actualisation des significations multiples. Ces possibilités plurielles de signification sont poursuivies conséquemment non seulement à travers le Molloy français, mais aussi à travers les rapports que celui-ci entretient avec le Molloy anglais, d’une part, et avec des textes beckettiens et non-beckettiens pré- Molloy , d’autre part. Les « jeux de mots » du roman se découvrent ainsi être les pierres angulaires d’une complexe configuration architexturale. L’étude de cas de Molloy que présente Modalités po(ï)étiques de configuration textuelle est potentiellement pertinente pour l’ensemble du corpus beckettien dans la mesure où la méthode intégrative d’analyse utilisée est susceptible de révéler de nouvelles données concernant la particularité de texturation de ce corpus, de même que des œuvres individuelles qui le composent. L’ouvrage s’adresse aux lecteurs de Beckett, mais aussi à ceux qui s’intéressent à des questions touchant à la traduction, voire l’auto-traduction littéraire, à l’intertextualité et aux approches linguistiques de la littérature qui reposent sur la sémantique cognitive et interprétative

Samuel Beckett produced some of the most powerful writing – some of the funniest but most devastating – of the twentieth century. Experiencing both physical and psychological pain in the course of his life, Beckett found suffering in human life inevitable, accepted it as a source of inspiration in his writings, and probed it to gain deeper insight into the difficult and emotionally demanding processes of artistic creation, practice and performance. Acknowledging the recent developments in the study of pain in literature and culture, this volume explores various aspects of pain in Beckett’s works, a subject which has been heretofore only sporadically noted. The topics discussed include Beckett’s aesthetics and pain, pain as loss and trauma, pain in relation to palliation, pain at the experience of the limit, pain as archive, and pain as part of everyday life and language. This volume is characterized by its plural, interdisciplinary perspectives covering the fields of literature, theatre, art, philosophy, and psychoanalysis. By suggesting more diverse paths in Beckett studies, the authors hope to make a lasting contribution to contemporary literary studies and other relevant fields

Combining intertextual analysis with a ‘schizoanalytic genealogy’ derived from the authors of L’Anti-Œdipe , Garin Dowd’s Abstract Machines: Samuel Beckett and Philosophy after Deleuze and Guattari offers an innovative response to this much debated question. The author focuses on zones of encounter and thresholds of engagement between Beckett’s writing and a range of philosophers (among them Spinoza, Leibniz and Kant) and philosophical concepts. Beckett’s writing impacts in a variety of ways on Deleuze and Guattari’s thought, and, in particular, resonates with Deleuze’s contributions to the history of philosophy (in books such as Le Pli: Leibniz et le baroque ), and his ‘critical and clinical’ approach to literature. Furthermore, the books co-written with Guattari, concerned as they are with the ‘molecularization’ of the discipline of philosophy in the name of ‘thinking otherwise’, reveal themselves in a new light when explored in conjunction with Beckett’s œuvre .     Main description: Ausgangspunkt für die vorliegende Untersuchung ist Becketts Roman Molloy und die Frage, wie durch dieses Werk ein besonderes mit seiner Darstellung der Bedeutungslosigkeit verbundenes Empfinden, nämlich das des Erhabenen, evoziert wird. Kants Theorie des Erhabenen wird im Rahmen seiner ästhetischen und moralischen Theorien interpretiert, um einen Weg aufzuzeigen, wie der Allgemeingültigkeitsanspruch ästhetischer Urteile verstanden werden kann. Nach Kant soll die Beurteilung des Erhabenen der Moral dienen, aber er selbst stellt die Verbindung nicht her; deswegen wird eine Theorie des Beitrags des ästhetischen Urteils zur Bildung eines moralischen Charakters entwickelt. Es wird argumentiert, daß für Kant die Kunst, einschließlich der Erzählkunst wie zum Beispiel der Roman, erhaben sein kann.     Main description: Beckett's novel Molloy and the question how this work evokes a particular kind of feeling associated with its exhibition of meaninglessness, namely the feeling of the sublime, is the point of departure for this study. Kant's theory of the sublime is interpreted within the framework of his aesthetic and moral theories, suggesting a way to understand the claim to universal validity for aesthetic judgements. Kant claims that the judgement of the sublime serves morality but he fails to provide this link, so a theory of how this aesthetic judgement can contribute to the cultivation of moral character is developed. It is argued that Kant held that art, including narrative art like the novel, can be sublime. Kant's theory of the sublime is shown to be relevant for modern works of art, and the application of this Kantian framework throws new light on the discussion of the moral aspects of Beckett's literary work. According to this account, Molloy is a sublime work of art, and despite its amoral content can serve the reader's moral cultivation

    Le présent volume examine le processus de transfert et les modalités de réception en Allemagne de l’Ouest du théâtre français « de l’absurde », à travers les œuvres de ses principaux représentants : Arthur Adamov, Samuel Beckett, Jean Genet et Eugène Ionesco.À partir d'archives inédites, l'ouvrage retrace les trajectoires des différents médiateurs de cette importation culturelle, en détaille la chronologie et les nombreux supports – théâtraux, radiophoniques ou encore télévisuels. Il documente les différentes étapes qui ont marqué la circulation des œuvres dans le paysage théâtral ouest-allemand entre 1949 et 1989, de leur découverte par les maisons d’éditions à leurs traductions et mises en scène majeures, et jusqu'à leur réception par la presse spécialisée et le grand public. Il montre notamment que le répertoire – par nature cosmopolite – du théâtre « de l’absurde » a été doté, dans la culture d’accueil ouest-allemande, d’une dimension internationale qui a favorisé son intégration.Ce travail de synthèse jette ainsi un nouvel éclairage non seulement sur l’histoire théâtrale, mais aussi sur les relations culturelles franco-allemandes de 1949 à 1989

What follows from this? In Beckett Writing Beckett, H. Porter Abbott argues that, by the time he had written Waiting for Godot, Beckett's art had crystallized as a life project keyed to the simultaneous action of writing and reading the self.How does such an interpretive shift change the way we see the salient features of Beckett's art: his extraordinary and persistent assaults on narrative, his restless exploration of genres and media, his attempts to exercise autocratic control over performance and publication, his increasingly musical formal structures, his tireless capacity to invent? How, moreover, does this view relate to the contempt for autobiography so pervasive in Beckett's work?In approaching these questions, Beckett Writing Beckett seeks to redirect current discussion of such concepts as "the author" and "originality." Arguing on several widely contested fronts in Beckett criticism, including such vexed issues as Beckett's postmodernism, his politics, and his relation to his audience, Abbott develops an interpretive method grounded in the concept of"autographical action."
