This publication uncovers two previously dismissed pre-modern adaptations of the Middle High German Wigalois (1215) by exploring their different approaches to female agency in comparison with the original Wigalois, the Yiddish Viduvilt (14th ct.) and the German Wigoleis (15th ct.). Traditionally, scholarship often concentrated on the Yiddish text presenting female figures as behaving in a "Jewish manner" or embodying famous Jewish mythical figures such as Lilith (see Achim Jaeger / Robert G. Warnock). Rather than trying to argue for or against a figure’s "Jewishness," I evaluate these interpretations from the perspective of Arthurian Literature by showing that the construction of female agency is at the center of all three adaptations of this important chapter of German-Jewish literature and culture

The premise that Western culture has undergone a 'pictorial turn' (W.J.T. Mitchell) has prompted renewed interest in theorizing the visual image. In recent decades researchers in the humanities and social sciences have documented the function and status of the image relative to other media, and have traced the history of its power and the attempts to disempower it. What is an Image in Medieval and Early Modern England? engages in this debate in two interrelated ways: by focusing on the (visual) image during a period that witnessed the Reformation and the invention of the printing press, and by exploring its status in relation to an array of texts including Arthurian romance, saints' lives, stage plays, printed sermons, biblical epic, pamphlets, and psalms. This interdisciplinary volume includes contributions by leading authorities as well as younger scholars from the fields of English literature, art history, and Reformation history. As with all previous collections of essays produced under the auspices of the Swiss Association of Medieval and Early Modern English Studies, it seeks to foster dialogue between the two periods

This is the first introduction in German to the Wigalois by Wirnt von Grafenberg, written around 1200. The introduction is written for the general reader, with a target readership both of students of medieval German literature and of a wider audience of those seeking an initial approach to the text. Each section of the romance is summarized exactly, the most important intertextual references are pointed up, and each scene is located within the overall context of the text using the findings of most recent research. In addition, this introduction provides information on the author, transmission of the text, its editorial history, and the structure and most important complexes of motifs in the Wigalois. Particular emphasis is placed on the productive medieval reception of the romance and its most important representatives, with the Erfurt version discovered in 2006 being presented for the first time. The introduction concludes with structured bibliographies and an index.

Starting from such theoretical gaps, the author analyzes the words and actions of the figures in the texts by "Der Pleier," and critically examines established narratological categories for their functionality in terms of the concept of "figure."

This volume uses the key concepts of "réécriture" and "reception" to investigate how individual Arthurian romances were transmitted, processed, re-wrote, and received in the Late Middle Ages, in early modernity, and through the 20th century

Sixty-five years after the founding of the International Arthurian Society, Arthurian researchers are examining how they can contribute to modern cultural andliterary studies. Using the example of several European Arthurian epics, the articles in this volume explore key questions from diverse fields, including gender studies, spirituality research, literary sociology, violence research, narratology, and media cultural science.
