Over the past couple of decades, urban transmedia festivals have gained a distinct presence in the European cultural landscape, constituting an alternative to other, more dominant, conceptions of music festivals. This article introduces transmedia festivals as a new type of contemporary festival and situates them in wider urban processes. Transmedia festivals originated on the fringes of new urban scenes, in which media art overlapped with electronic music and club culture. Based on multi-year field research, this article argues that these festivals have become part of urban renewal processes. The core focus of this article is therefore how transmedia festivals are part of processes such as eventization, culturalization, precarization, and gentrification. Local and EU-funding-policies, moreover, impose opportunities and dilemmas on urban festivals. The article is a contribution to the still small area of cultural and urban studies on such festivals in Europe, and situates transmedia festivals within urban cultural change. Another major focus is on the artistic and cultural practices presented at the festivals; which are experimental electronic music, media art and sound art.

Introduction -- What is contemporary art? -- Where did it come from? -- Does it have to mean something? -- What about how it feels? -- Does it have to be so serious? -- Does it matter who makes it? -- Where do you draw the line? -- Can anything be art? -- Has it all been done before? -- What now? -- Bibliography -- Index -- Picture credits -- Acknowledgements. How can you tell if that fire extinguisher on the wall is an installation piece, or a safety requirement? How can a Banksy increase in value even as it gets put through a shredder? And couldn't a five-year-old have done all of this, anyway? 'Contemporary Art Decoded' takes ten key questions about contemporary art and uses them to dissect and explain the contemporary art world. Jessica Cerasi digs deep into the ideas and concepts behind the art, but avoids unnecessary jargon. This book is guaranteed to make your next trip to a gallery a more rewarding experience. Chapters include: - What is contemporary art? - Where did it come from? - Where do you draw the line? - Does it matter who makes it? - Does it have to mean something? - Can anything be art? - What about art for art's sake? - Has it all been done before? - Does it have to be so serious? - What's next? This volume explores the concept of "glitch" alongside contemporary digital political economy to develop a general theory of critical media using glitch as a case study and model, focusing specifically on examples of digital art and aesthetics. While prior literature on glitch practice in visual arts has been divided between historical discussions and social-political analyses, this work provides a rigorous, contemporary theoretical foundation and framework

In the Holocene' is based on a 2012 group exhibition of the same name at the MIT List Visual Arts Center that explored art as a speculative science, investigating principles more commonly associated with scientific or mathematical thought. Through the work of an intergenerational group of artists, the exhibition and book propose that art acts as an investigative and experimental form of inquiry, addressing or amending what is explained through traditional scientific or mathematical means: entropy, matter, time (cosmic, geological), energy, topology, mimicry, perception, consciousness, et cetera. Sometimes employing scientific methodologies or the epistemology of science, other times investigating phenomena not restricted to any scientific discipline, art can be seen as a form of inquiry into the physical and natural world. In this sense, both art and science share an interest in knowledge, realism, and observable phenomena, yet are subject to different logics, principles of reasoning, and conclusions.
