In this finely crafted study, Ann Romines builds on twenty years of feminist scholarship to show how domestic ritual--the practice and tradition of housekeeping has helped shape the substance and tone of some of the best fiction by American women. Examining works by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Sarah Orne Jewett, Mary Wilkins Freeman, Willa Cather, and Eudora Welty, Romines argues that one cannot fully appreciate this writing unless one understands the domestic codes in which it is inscribed. Romines opens with the American realist period, when such women as Stowe and Jewett began to experiment with plots generated by the rhythms of domestic ritual. Chapter 2 is an extended reading of Jewett's The Country of the Pointed Firs, showing how the silent, traditional language of housekeeping becomes the medium for an autobiographical writer and her sibylline mentor. In chapter 3, Romines shows how Freeman devised a very different strategy, counterpointing climactic plots against relentless repetitions in ways that evoke the stresses and satisfactions of housekeepers' lives. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss Cather's ambitious career. Although at first determined to avoid the constraints of domesticity in her writing, Cather increasingly was drawn to women's culture, and her later novels include several triumphant experiments with domestic fiction. The final two chapters, on Eudora Welty, reveal how the priorities of housekeeping have marked her fiction from beginning to end. By reading domestic ritual as a gendered language, Romines seeks to reclaim one of the oldest female traditions-housekeeping--from trivialization and devaluation. In the process, she brings fresh insight to the work of five important American novelists. "In this important and stimulating study, Romines helps to pioneer a new direction in feminist criticism, one that locates women's aesthetics in their material practices, particularly in the rituals of domestic labor."

In Writing Home, Mary Suzanne Schriber offers the first comprehensive analysis of the large body of U.S. women's travel literature written between the pre-Civil War years and World War I. Examining almost a century's worth of published book-length accounts, ranging from the travel diaries of ordinary women to the narratives of Harriet Beecher Stowe and Edith Wharton, Schriber argues persuasively for the importance of gender considerations in the reading of all travel texts. She discusses the differences between men's and women's constructions, in writing, of their experiences abroad - differences that extend beyond more observations to the way each gender is treated in foreign cultures, responds to them, and seizes the occasion of travel and writing to do cultural work.

Frederick Crews has been a force in American literary culture ever since his hilarious spoof of criticism, The Pooh Perplex, made its way onto the bestseller lists in 1963. Now, in The Critics Bear It Away, he turns his attention to the way key American novelists - from Hawthorne, Melville, Stowe, and Twain to Hemingway, Faulkner, O'Connor, and Updike - are being apprehended, and misapprehended, by the academic avant-garde. As Crews shows, recent theoretical discourse takes a justifiably hard line toward the liberal humanism and formalism that dominated the discussion of American classics for many years following World War II. As academics have become more distrustful of the social attitudes that produced a largely white-male, New England-based canon, they have developed a dramatically altered account of standard authors - sometimes indicting them for ideological deficiencies, sometimes attempting to render their texts more congenial through "decentered" techniques of analysis With relentless logic and a keen eye for the telling detail, Crews shows what is gained and, more often, what is sacrificed by such well-intentioned maneuvers. Are we really better off, he asks, with a Mark Twain who has been stripped of his idiosyncratic wit and reduced to the level of contemporaries whose prejudices he may have shared? Conversely, should we rejoice when methodological sleight-of-hand makes Faulkner's blatant sexism and Flannery O'Connor's Catholic pietism disappear? This is not to say, however, that Crews exercises his skepticism only on proposals from academic trendsetters. The Critics Bear It Away is just as unsparing toward traditionalists who want the cultural clock to be forever stopped at 1945. Crews's purpose is not to support a faction but to expose critical illusions "And the particular illusions I will be examining," he announces, "originate in conservative as well as radical impulses - in, for example, New Critical formalism, orthodox intentionalism, Christian or Agrarian moralism, and outright hero worship of the sort that transforms an Ernest Hemingway or a John Updike from a spiteful, ethically confused, yet often compelling writer into an icon of pure masculinity or matchless sophistication." Taken together, Crews's chapters - many of which derive from controversial essays he has published in The New York Review of Books - make a coherent stand, not for any one ideology or method, but for a nuanced, biographically aware criticism that faces troubling issues without retreating into dogmatism. The Critics Bear It Away is a major statement from a critic to whom books and authors, with all their limitations on view, matter far more than cliques and trends

In Narrating Discovery Bruce Greenfield chronicles the development of the antebellum Euro-American discovery narrative. These narratives depicted the Euro-American advance westward not as a violent intrusion into occupied territories but as an inevitable by-product of science and civilization. Despite the centrality of indigenous peoples in the frontier narratives, the landscape was nevertheless sketched in biblical terms as "a terrestrial paradise ...unpeopled and unexplored," as writers insisted upon seeing "emptiness as the essential quality of the land." Beginning with the British writers Hearne, Mackenzie, and Henry, Greenfield then traces the early American narratives of Lewis and Clark, Pike, and Fremont, demonstrating how these agents of the first New World nation-state brought a distinct imperial mentality to the frontier, viewing it both as foreign and as part of their home But Romantic writers such as Cooper, Irving, Poe, and Thoreau felt ill at ease with the colonialist discourse they inherited, and Greenfield shows how to varying degrees each altered a discourse openly based on subjugation to one highlighting profoundly personal and aesthetic responses to the American landscape. The book concludes with an illuminating discussion of Thoreau, who transformed the discovery narrative from its origins in conflict and institutional authority into the "expression of personal identity with the continent as a symbol of American potential." Written with clarity and insight, Narrating Discovery brings a fresh perspective to current debates over who "discovered" America and recovers the complexity of frontier experience through a searching look at some of the vivid narrative accounts
