The Oxford Handbook of British Romanticism offers a comprehensive guide to the literature and thought of the Romantic period, and an overview of recent research. Written by a team of international experts, the Handbook analyses all aspects of the Romantic movement, pinpointing its different historical phases and analysing the intellectual and political currents which shaped them. It gives particular attention to devolutionary trends, exploring the English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish strands in 'British' Romanticism and assessing the impact of the constitutional changes that brought into being the 'United Kingdom' at a time of international conflict. It also gives extensive coverage to the publishing and reception history of Romantic writing, highlighting the role of readers, reviewers, publishers, and institutions in shaping Romantic literary culture and transmitting its ideas and values.

"Romanticism is an intuitive grasp of the self and the other in an interdependent imperative, non-systematic, transcendent, radically individuated, and endlessly interconnective. The set of norms Romanticism represents and broadcasts, therefore, lends itself particularly well to interdisciplinary and cross-linguistic study, essentially demanding a view coming from and constructed out of more than one discourse field. These norms radically transgress not only the cultural and literary inheritance of thinkers and artists beginning in the late eighteenth century, but do so in a transnational and comparative way unique in Western history. This collection of essays, bringing together established scholars and newer academic voices, offers fresh perspectives on what Romanticism thought itself to be by suggesting spaces in Romanticism studies needing negotiation and elaboration. Presenting a protocol that escapes the circular referentiality of Romanticism studies typically limited to one academic discipline or one language area, this volume works through topics and ideas including Hegelian reflections, lyric poetry, stage drama, music, political implications, and even vampires, outlaws and zombies."--

"Essays that highlight the pervasive role of Romantic poetry and poetics on modern and contemporary innovative poetry"-- "Literary history generally locates the primary movement toward poetic innovation in twentieth-century modernism, an impulse carried out against a supposedly enervated "late-Romantic" poetry of the nineteenth century. The original essays in Active Romanticism challenge this interpretation by tracing the fundamental continuities between Romanticism's poetic and political radicalism and the experimental movements in poetry from the late-nineteenth-century to the present day. According to editors July Carr and Jeffrey C. Robinson, "active romanticism" is a poetic response, direct or indirect, to pressing social issues and an attempt to redress forms of ideological repression; at its core, "active romanticism" champions democratic pluralism and confronts ideologies that suppress the evidence of pluralism. "Poetry fetter'd, fetters the human race," declared poet William Blake at the beginning of the nineteenth century. No other statement from the era of the French Revolution marks with such terseness the challenge for poetry to participate in the liberation of human society from forms of inequality and invisibility. No other statement insists so vividly that a poetic event pushing for social progress demands the unfettering of traditional, customary poetic form and language. Bringing together work by well-known writers and critics, ranging from scholarly studies to poets' testimonials, Active Romanticism shows Romantic poetry not to be the sclerotic corpse against which the avant-garde reacted but rather the well-spring from which it flowed. Offering a fundamental rethinking of the history of modern poetry, Carr and Robinson have grouped together in this collection a variety of essays that confirm the existence of Romanticism as an ongoing mode of poetic production that is innovative and dynamic, a continuation of the nineteenth-century Romantic tradition, and a form that reacts and renews itself at any given moment of perceived social crisis. "--

"How does Romantic poetry read if seen as the product of social authorship--the group language of coteries of writers, editors, publishers and critics--rather than as a series of verbal icons--original lyrics and romances composed by individual geniuses? Romantic Poetry and Literary Coteries explores Romanticism as a discourse characterized by tropes and forms that were jointly produced by literary circles - writing communities - in self-conscious opposition to prevailing social and political values and in deliberate differentiation from the normal practices of contemporary print culture. Among the tropes examined are allusion and borrowing; among the forms discussed are blank-verse effusions, political squibs, magazine essays, millenarian prophecies, long-form notebook verse, illustrated tour poems and prose journals. Coteries considered include the Southey/Coleridge circle, including Bowles, Cottle, Cowper, Lamb, Lloyd, Robinson and Wordsworth; the Bloomfield circle, including Capel Lofft and Thomas Hood; the Clare circle, including Byron, Cowper, William Knight and John Taylor; the Cockneys, including Richard Brothers, William Bryan, De Quincey, Hood, Leigh Hunt, Robert Mudie, Patmore"--
