    Das 'Prinzip Schlüssel' als das komplementäre Verfahren verschlüsselnden Schreibens und entschlüsselnder Lektüre wird an Erzähltexten erwiesen, beginnend beim höfischen Roman über Chr.M. Wielands Abderiten-Roman, Goethes »Die Leiden des jungen Werthers« sowie E.T.A. Hoffmanns »Meister Floh« bis zu den Künstlerromanen der Jahrhundertwende und dem Werk Thomas und Klaus Manns (»Mephisto«; »Doktor Faustus«). Sichtbar wird Verschlüsselung nicht mehr nur als zu Unrecht suspektes literarisches Verfahren, sondern als Teil einer Geheimhaltungspraktik, deren Ausübung für eine Gesellschaft immer kulturell hochgradig aussagekräftig ist The 'key principle' as a complementary procedure to cryptographic writing and deciphering reading is demonstrated here with reference to various narrative texts, beginning with the courtly romance, extending to Chr.M. Wieland's »Geschichte der Abderiten«, Goethe's »Die Leiden des jungen Werther«, and E.T.A. Hoffmann's »Meister Floh«, and proceeding from there to discuss early 20th century novels with artists as their central figures, and the works of Thomas and Klaus Mann (»Mephisto«, »Doktor Faustus«). The roman à clef emerges cleansed of its opprobrium as a 'suspect' form of literary activity, and stands revealed as an instance of covert reference that invariably casts a highly illuminating light on the societies occasioning its use

    Main description: The volume is a contribution to the history of the Jews in medieval Europe and seeks to achieve more precise purchase on this complex culture-historical process by concentrating on one specific element of it. The articles analyze literary testimonies in German from the 12th to the 17th centuries written from a Christian perspective and containing images of Jews, their religion, their mentality, and recommendations for dealings between Christians and Jews. At the same time, the preconditions and the impact of these literary constructs are discussed against the backdrop of relevant research from the fields of theology and social history

    Main description: Der Leser einer Kunstbeschreibung (Ekphrasis) ist bei der Lektüre einem ständigen Oszillieren zwischen Text und Bild ausgesetzt. Die vorliegende Untersuchung geht anhand verschiedener Beispiele den Einsichten nach, die die mittelalterliche Literatur ihren Lesern eröffnet, indem sie immer wieder Bild- und Architekturbeschreibungen in den linearen Fluss narrativer Texte einschaltet. Die Arbeit versucht, eine Geschichte der Ekphrasis zu rekonstruieren, die sich vom antiken Epos bis zum nachklassischen höfischen Roman im ausgehenden 13. Jahrhundert erstreckt. Vor allem drei Konzepte leiten die Argumentation: die Analyse literarischer Kunstbeschreibungen als Memorialbilder, als Spiegelungen des Visuellen im Verbalen bzw. der Makro- in der Mikroerzählung sowie als virtueller Schauraum

    Main description: The reader of an artistic description (ecphrasis) is subjected to a constant oscillation between the text and the image. Using various examples, the present study examines the insights which medieval literary works open up to their readers by continually inserting descriptions of pictures and architecture into the linear flow of narrative texts. Wandhoff attempts to reconstruct a history of ecphrasis, which extends from the epics of antiquity to the post-classic courtly romance at the end of the 13th century. The argumentation is led by three principal concepts - the analysis of literary descriptions as memorial pictures, as reflections of the visual in the verbal or the macro-narrative in the micro-narrative, or as a virtual display

    Der Band widmet sich dem Phänomen Raum als realer Voraussetzung, Denkmodell und Struktur poetischer Imagination. Er erweist die Historizität des Denkens im Raum und in Räumen an instruktiven Beispielen. Die präsentierten Aufsätze, hervorgegangen aus Beiträgen, die auf einer Hartmut Kugler gewidmeten Tagung im März 2009 an der Universität Erlangen gehalten wurden, betreffen vor allem die deutsche und französische Literatur des Mittelalters, schlaglichtartig aber auch historiographische, musik- und kunstwissenschaftliche, kartographische und wissensgeschichtliche Fragen.     Dieses Buch handelt vom Schreiben bei Baudri de Bourgueil, Gervasius von Tilbury, Otto von Freising, Rudolf von Ems und Ulrich von Liechstenstein. Was ihre Texte verbindet, ist ihr Status in dem Spannungsfeld, das die Begriffe Schreiben, Bildung und Gespräch umreissen. Die Texte liegen schriftlich vor, doch sind sie damit nicht zur Ruhe gekommen: Sie setzen einen Umgang mit ihnen voraus und fordern ihn explizit ein, der ihnen bei allem Bemühen um ihre Form und ihre Aufzeichnung - paradoxerweise - etwas Ephemeres verleiht und doch zugleich erst ihre Wirkung sichern, ihr Dauer verleihen soll: Sie verlangen nach verschiedenen Formen der Mündlichkeit, nach Erschliessungsleistungen unter verschiedener Beteiligung, und ihre Autoren erwarten erst von dieser Aktivierung der Texte im 'Gespräch' den Beitrag zur Veränderung des (oder der) Rezipienten, zu dieser oder jener Art von Bildung ('informacio'), die sie intendieren. Diese Texte faszinieren also unter dem Gesichtspunkt der in ihnen angelegten Möglichkeiten, je neu in durch sie ausgelöster Rede aufzugehen, sich (vorübergehend) entbehrlich zu machen und so zu Medien zu werden.
