    Main description: Weite Teile mittelalterlichen Erzählens gelten aufgrund ihrer mythischen, christlichen oder historischen Perspektivierung in besonderer Weise als anfangs- und endfixiert. Der Band verfolgt die Kategorien Anfang und Ende in ihren narratologischen, kulturellen und anthropologischen Dimensionen. Ob Subjekte, Kollektive oder die Geschichte insgesamt, sie alle werden epochenspezifischen Kausalitäten und Finalitäten unterworfen. Die literaturwissenschaftlichen Beiträge werden durch kulturwissenschaftliche und historische Arbeiten ergänzt, um die Fragestellung - diachron und synchron - in ihren kulturellen Kontexten zu verorten. Sie untersuchen das Verhältnis von Erzählstrukturen und kulturellen Narrativen, von historisch wirkungsmächtigen Sinnbildungsmustern sowie das Spektrum konkreter Erzählformen, in denen Kausalität und Finalität auf unterschiedliche Art modelliert werden

Das heißt aber nicht immer, dass sie unter negativen Vorzeichen rezipiert wurden: Denn in ihren Eigenschaften und Verhaltensweisen spiegelt sich oft das Fragwürdige gängiger Normen, Sitten und Bräuche, aber auch die Suche nach Rechtfertigung alter sowie die Begründung neuer ethischer Normen und Werte. Kunst und Literatur haben sich ihrer bedient, um die gesellschaftlicher Praxis zugrunde liegenden verbindlichen sittlichen Normen der jeweils herrschenden Moral und die Begründung von Formen und Prinzipien rechten Handelns zu beweisen oder auch zu verwerfen. Unterschiedliche Zeiten fassen sie durchaus unterschiedlich, ja widersprüchlich auf, und viele von ihnen sind bis heute in Literatur und Kunst, auf der Bühne und im Film lebendig geblieben. Rezension (ekz): Der Untertitel weist darauf hin, dass es hier vor allem um "Wundervölker" geht: "wunderliche", "monströse" menschliche oder menschenähnliche Wesen mit körperlichen oder sonstigen Abweichungen in fernen, fremden Gebieten; sie gehören aber zur Vielfalt der Schöpfung. Es geht also nicht um singuläre und gar übernatürliche, gefährliche Wesen wie Dämonen. Der Bonner Professor (zum mittelalterlichen Weltbild schon) beschreibt den Platz dieser "Monster" in der Welt des Mittelalters, die zeitgemäe︢n Erklärungen für ihre Herkunft, die Ursachen für den Glauben an diese Wesen und schlägt schliesslich den Bogen zu "Wundervölkern" in der frühen Neuzeit bis in die Gegenwart (Stichwort: "Science-Fiction"). Ein 79-seitiges Lexikon dieser Wesen beschliesst den Band, der mit ca. 150 Abbildungen gut illustriert ist. Über 40 Seiten Anmerkungen, Quellen- und Literaturverzeichnis. Die wissenschaftliche, aber verständliche Arbeit öffnet den Blick für eine besondere mittelalterliche Spezies jenseits der üblichen Monster- und Dämonengestalten und ist für eine entsprechend interessierte Leserschaft von Gewinn.     "Taking as his starting point the assumption that the major cultural gulf in the Middle Ages was less between the wealthy and the poor than between the learned and the lay, Green explores the church's systematic demonization of fairies and infernalization of fairyland. He argues that when medieval preachers inveighed against the demons that they portrayed as threatening their flocks, they were in reality often waging war against fairy beliefs. The recognition that medieval demonology, and indeed pastoral theology, were packed with coded references to popular lore opens up a whole new avenue for the investigation of medieval vernacular culture. Elf Queens and Holy Friars offers a detailed account of the church's attempts to suppress or redirect belief in such things as fairy lovers, changelings, and alternative versions of the afterlife. That the church took these fairy beliefs so seriously suggests that they were ideologically loaded, and this fact makes a huge difference in the way we read medieval romance, the literary genre that treats them most explicitly.
