Other ; Travelogues involve different truth claims, depending on whether their authors attempt on the one hand to convey received knowledge about entities and places, or on the other hand, present accounts of the traveler character’s own experiences. This study focuses on a travelogue from 1764 written by the Arabian Nights’ Syrian storyteller, Ḥanna Dyāb. Having written his travelogue more than 50 years after his trip to Paris, he evidently conceived of his narrative as a means to re-enact his experiences as a young traveler. To describe his particular self-staging in this autodiegetic narration “before fiction” (Paige 2011), I argue that an understanding of focalization as a graded visual mediation between the character’s inner life and the reader is needed. This approach helps one grasp how, with reference to Dyāb’s travelogue, truth is not something the traveler witnesses, but rather something the reader is invited to realize. I conclude that, with this shift from witnessing to visualization (Vergegenwärtigung), Dyāb’s travelogue fulfills a core function of literature.

Über hundert Jahre nach dem Tod des Schriftstellers machen die Herausgeber dieses Bandes eine repräsentative Textauswahl in neuer und teils erstmaliger deutscher Übersetzung zugänglich. Der Band spiegelt die ganze Vielfalt von Tolstojs theologischem und kirchenkritischem Engagement: Neben Traktaten wie »Kirche und Staat« oder »Religion und Sittlichkeit« sowie Auszügen aus längeren Schriften enthält er zahlreiche kleinere Texte: religiöse Briefe, Tagebucheinträge, Fragmente, Aphorismen, Gebete und Gleichnisse. Tolstojs Entwürfe werden von Theologen, Philosophen und Literaturwissenschaftlern neu bewertet und kritisch gewürdigt. Im Fokus stehen insbesondere die philosophischen und theologischen Voraussetzungen sowie die breite Wirkungsgeschichte der theologischen Schriften des Autors.

Other ; The economic and cultural rise of parts of the ʿāmma due to the particular economic and infrastructural conditions of the Mamluk era fostered the emergence of new intermediate levels of literature that were situated between the literature of the elite and that of the utterly ignorant and unlettered populace, between the Arabic koiné (al-ʿarabīya al-fuṣḥā) and the local dialects (ʿāmmīya-s), between written and oral composition, performance and transmission. The paper proposes to analyze the composition of three Mamluk adab-encyclopedias and their treatment of poverty and wealth in light of the social milieus of their authors and publics.

Other ; Im vorliegenden Essay wird eine Lesart des viel diskutierten Paris-Berichts von Rifāʿa aṭ-Ṭahṭāwī vorgestellt. Kontrastierend zu der Annahme, Ṭahṭāwī habe eine Reise aus einer Kultur in eine andere unternommen, soll hier dargelegt werden, wie sich aus dem Text des Ägypters ein eigenes Kulturverständnis erschließen lässt. Besonders Ṭahṭāwīs Bemühungen um die Übersetzung des französischen Begriffs 'civilisation' deuten auf ein plurales Verständnis von 'Kultur'. Denn im Text lassen sich diejenigen Dimensionen des Begriffs 'Kultur' finden, die auch aus der europäischen Geistesgeschichte rekonstruiert werden können: Kultur als bestimmter Lebensstil, als Prozessbegriff zur Beschreibung gesellschaftlicher Entwicklung und als kreative oder künstlerische Aktivität.
