This paper discusses the role of German Jesuit priests in the conquest of the lower amazon area in the 17th century. The Luxemburg missionary John Philip Bettendorff, founder of the second largest city of Pará, Santarém, was one of the most important figures while colonizing the Estate of Maranhão e Great-Pará. His chronicle is not only an important testimony of the settlements’ history but also of the Jesuit activities as handicraft workers and artists while catechizing this region. Thus, it comprehends a part of the rich cultural memory of colonial Brazil.

Coming to terms with the past of the experience of war and dictatorship in the 20th century in Germany is a central theme also in recent literature and has given rise to various studies. The present contribution aims at a comparative analysis of coming to terms with the past in contemporary novels of German literature, focusing on the figure of the National Socialist and the question of guilt. In this context, the following questions, among others, will have to be investigated: in which perpetrator/victim role do convinced Nazis and other Germans appear? Are they authentic or stereotyped figures? In what respect do these texts today, more than 70 years after the end of the Second World War, do they meet the expectations of readers or do they change the view of the dark past? By comparing German novels of the 21st century, an attempt will be made to show the common features of coming to terms with a problematic past in literary form, the question of guilt for the crimes committed during the Nazi era. The concepts of memory and remembrance play an important role here, as this field of research is of great importance in both cultural and literary studies. The debates on Germany's historical past require a critical look at the theory of memory culture and collective memory. It is necessary to question how this past is perceived by the war generation and the generations that followed. This literature thus emerges as a significant medium that facilitates the debate on coming to terms with the past and guilt. From the perspective of four novels of contemporary German-language literature, this book attempts to present various representations of this theme. The present contribution is intended to open paths for future, in-depth discussions and to arouse interest in this literature in order to better analyse and understand the constant presence of the past in the present. The selected novels presented here are Günter Grass, "Im Krebsgang" (2002), Uwe Timm, "Am Beispiel meines Bruders" (2001), "Spione" by Marcel Beyer (2000) and "Der Vorleser" (1995) by Bernhard Schlink.

The object of this paper is to attempt a comparison between the perception of the big city by an author of German expressionism, Georg Heym, and the Brazilian modernist Mario de Andrade. The aim is to compare the poetic visions of two cities, Berlin and Sao Paulo, at the beginning of the twentieth century and highlight both, the coincidences and differences in the perception of urban life, based on the ideas of the German sociologist Georg Simmel on the life of man in modernity and the stimulations of nerve impulses.
