The study "Two poems of Friedrich Hölderlin" is Walter Benjamin's first major critical work. Regarding this essay, the interpreters have been so far concerned with Benjamin's more general thesis and influences, without taking further acknowledgement of the heterodox twists active on his exegetical strategies. But, beyond the veil of the essay's methodological principles, it is possible to recognize the roots of a modern approach to Hölderlin's poetics, where the classical idealistic motives are replaced with a more sensual and materialist reading. Such turn would respond to the presence of early intuitions that eventually will become significant critical axes in Benjamin's thought.
