    This article gives an overview of the syntactic, prosodic and semantic behaviour, as well as of the textual function, of causal connectives in present day German. In the first section, text coherence is divided into the domains of spatial, temporal and causal coherence. Spatial and temporal coherence are to a considerable extent encoded by grammatical means, while causal coherence is mainly encoded by lexical means: prepositions, conjunctions and adverbs. In the second section, the most important causal connectives of present day German are described, and their basic syntactic and semantic properties introduced. The third section deals with the linguistic concept of cause, contextualizing it within more general philosophical considerations on causation. The concept of cause is traced back to the underlying concepts of situation and condition. The fourth section is devoted to the distinction between three types of causal connections, labelled as dispositional, epistemic and deontic/illocutionary. Empirically, there are many cases in which a causal connection between two sentences can receive more than one of these readings. The following subsections examine in more detail the syntactic, prosodic and semantic conditions that render epistemic and deontic readings of causal connections possible. The main factors influencing the interpretation are shown to be syntactic, prosodic and informational integration of the connected expressions, definiteness of the cause as well as modal contexts. Der vorliegende Aufsatz gibt einen Überblick über das syntaktische, prosodische und semantische Verhalten sowie die textuelle Funktion kausaler Konnektoren im heutigen Deutsch. Im ersten Abschnitt wird Textkohärenz in räumliche, zeitliche und kausale Kohärenz unterteilt. Räumliche und zeitliche Kohärenz werden zu einem erheblichen Teil durch grammatische Sprachmittel kodiert, während kausale Kohärenz vor allem durch lexikalische Mittel ausgedrückt wird: durch Präpositionen, Konjunktionen und Adverbien. Im zweiten Abschnitt werden die wichtigsten kausalen Konnektoren des Gegenwartsdeutschen vorgestellt und in ihren syntaktischen und semantischen Haupteigenschaften beschrieben. Der dritte Abschnitt behandelt das linguistische Konzept der Ursache vor dem Hintergrund allgemeinerer philosophischer Reflexionen über Kausalität. Das Konzept der Verursachung wird zurückgeführt auf die zugrundeliegenden Konzepte der Situation und der Bedingung. Der vierte Abschnitt ist der Unterscheidung zwischen drei Arten kausaler Verknüpfungen gewidmet, die als dispositionelle, epistemische und deontisch-illokutionäre bezeichnet werden. Empirisch erlauben kausale Verknüpfungen häufig mehr als eine dieser Lesarten. Die folgenden Unterabschnitte untersuchen im Detail die syntaktischen, prosodischen und semantischen Bedingungen, durch die epistemische und deontische Lesarten kausaler Verknüpfungen möglich werden. Als wichtigste Faktoren, die die Interpretation beeinflussen, werden herausgestellt: syntaktische, prosodische und informationelle Integration der verknüpften Ausdrücke, Definitheit der Ursache sowie modale Umgebungen.

    This study outlines the formation of the category of "modal verb" within the grammaticography of German from the beginnings in the 16th century up to its "canonization" in the first half of the 20th century, also showing certain parallels to the treatment of modal verbs in the grammaticography of Portuguese. It also describes the influence German grammaticography had on the formation of this category in the grammaticography of Portuguese. Este estudo analisa a formação da categoria de "verbo modal" na gramaticografia do alemão, desde as primeiras gramáticas do século XVI até a sua "canonização" na primeira metade do século XX, apontando também para alguns paralelos com o tratamento dos verbos modais na gramaticografia do português, bem como as influências da gramaticografia do alemão sobre a formação desta categoria na gramaticografia do português.

    This article focuses on the rhetorical structure of introductory sections in Brazilian and German MA dissertations from the field of linguistics. The analysis is based on the CARS ("Create a Research Space") model proposed by Swales (1990) for examining introductions in English research papers. We also resort to Hutz (1997), who applies Swales' CARS model and compares English and German research papers from the discipline of psychology, and compare Brazilian with German text production (case study). The aim of this paper is to investigate whether Brazilian and German MA dissertations follow the same schematic patterns. Do the differences hold across the two cultures and different disciplines? To what extend can we talk about a 'universal academic discourse', as Widdowson (1979) claims? O artigo analisa a estrutura retórica da "introdução" em dissertações brasileiras e alemãs da área de lingüística (estudo de caso). Tomando como base o modelo CARS ("Create a Research Space") de Swales (1990) e Hutz (1997) sobre a estrutura genérica de introduções de artigos acadêmicos em inglês, o objetivo desta pesquisa é investigar se as introduções de dissertações seguem um esquema comunicativo-proposicional, e, se for o caso, de que maneira se distinguem as introduções em relação às culturas e disciplinas. Até que ponto se pode falar da "universalidade do discurso acadêmico", como proclama Widdowson (1979)?

    In his Berlin Trilogy, Uwe Timm broaches the division of Germany and the Reunification with the novels "Johannisnacht" (1996), "Rot" (2001) and "Halbschatten" (2008). In the first two novels, the memories and experiences told by the characters offer a heterogeneous panorama of the post-World War II period in both the East and the West of the country: "Johannisnacht" shows the chaos across Berlin in 1995 and the difficulties to integrate Eastern and Western Germans. In "Rot", the failure of socialism accounts for the disappointment by members of the German student movement. In "Halbschatten", the author focuses on German history before 1945, searching in Prussia’s militarist past the causes of the scenery we find in both other novels. The Invalidenfriedhof Cemetery, the oldest in Berlin, appears as a stage of historical events and a place where memory becomes concretely visible: besides uniting the military Prussian elite and important members of the Nazi army with resistance fighters, it was divided in half by the Berlin Wall. Uwe Timm thematisiert die Teilung und die Wende in seiner Berlin-Trilogie mit den Romanen "Johannisnacht" (1996), "Rot" (2001) und "Halbschatten" (2008). Bei den zwei ersten bieten die Erinnerungen und Erfahrungen der Figuren ein vielfältiges Panorama der Nachkriegszeit in Ost und West dar: In "Johannisnacht" tritt das Chaos in der Stadt im Jahr 1995 in Erscheinung sowie die Integrationsschwierigkeiten zwischen "Ossis" und "Wessis". In "Rot" gehört das Scheitern des Sozialismus in der DDR zu den Enttäuschungen der 68er. In "Halbschatten" konzentriert sich der Autor auf die Deutsche Geschichte vor 1945 und sucht die Ursachen für das Szenario der beiden ersten Romane der Trilogie in der militaristischen Vergangenheit Preußens. Der Invalidenfriedhof, der älteste der Stadt, erscheint als Bühne der Geschichte und als Ort, wo das Gedächtnis konkret wird, denn er hat nicht nur die militärische preußische Elite und mächtige Nazis mit Widerstandskämpfern vereinigt, er wurde auch von der Berliner Mauer geteilt. Uwe Timm tematiza a divisão da Alemanha e o processo de reunificação em sua "Trilogia de Berlim", com os romances "Johannisnacht" (1996), "Rot" (2001) e "Halbschatten" (2008). Nos dois primeiros, as lembranças e experiências narradas pelas personagens oferecem um panorama heterogêneo do período pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial no leste e no oeste do país: "Johannisnacht" apresenta o caos da cidade em 1995 e a dificuldade de comunicação entre "Ossis" e "Wessis", enquanto em "Rot", o fracasso da experiência socialista é parte das desilusões dos velhos ativistas do Movimento Estudantil. Por sua vez, em "Halbschatten", o autor focaliza a história alemã antes de 1945, buscando no passado militarista da Prússia as causas do cenário presente nos dois romances anteriores. O Cemitério dos Inválidos, o mais antigo da cidade, aparece como palco de eventos históricos e memória concretamente visível: além de unir a elite militar prussiana e membros do alto comando nazistas a lutadores da resistência anti-hitleriana, ele foi dividido ao meio pelo Muro de Berlim.

    Through a comparative analysis of DaF-textbooks (DaF= Deutsch als Fremdsprache: German as a Foreign language) of "business German" and "professional German" I explore in this article as to what extent general language and special language textbooks differ from one another. This study not only highlights similarities and differences in the explored textbooks but also opens up a new perspective on the problems, which arise through the very particular requirements of special language textbooks. The outcome of my study implies that, although special language textbooks differ from general textbooks in their conceptualization, in fact their differences to general language textbooks tend to be marginal. Anhand einer vergleichenden Analyse von DaF-Lehrwerken aus dem Bereich "Wirtschaftsdeutsch" und "Berufsdeutsch" wird der Frage nachgegangen, inwiefern sich gemeinsprachliche und fachsprachliche Lehrwerke voneinander unterscheiden. Dabei werden nicht nur Unterschiede bzw. Gemeinsamkeiten sichtbar gemacht, sondern auch Probleme aufgezeigt, die sich aus den besonderen Anforderungen an Fachsprachenlehrwerke ergeben. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung weisen darauf hin, dass sich fachsprachliche Lehrwerke zumeist vor allem idealtypisch von gemeinsprachlichen unterscheiden, in der konkreten Umsetzung sind die Unterschiede bisweilen marginal. A partir da análise comparativa de obras didáticas de DaF (= Deutsch als Fremdsprache: Alemão como Língua Estrangeira) das áreas de "alemão para economistas" e de "alemão para profissionais", este trabalho investiga até que ponto obras didáticas para o ensino da linguagem comum se distinguem de obras didáticas para o ensino de linguagens técnico-científicas. Além das diferenças e das semelhanças das obras didáticas analisadas, esta pesquisa mostra também os problemas surgidos das necessidades específicas de obras didáticas para o ensino de linguagens técnico-científicas. Os resultados da pesquisa apontam que, embora existam diferenças entre a concepção das obras didáticas para o ensino da linguagem comum e aquelas para o ensino de linguagem técnico-científica, na prática, essas diferenças são insignificantes.
