This essay traces the ambivalences in the discourses of power/death and art/life in Paul Celan's poem "Todesfuge" (1945). The interpretation first demonstrates an inner connection between structures of psycho-social imagination and concepts of repressive identity – even in (German) civil society – as one of the conditions of the turn to a totalitarian reality of death. Celan‟s poem strictly rejects a representational approach to its subject, as well as an artistic transformation of the situation in the death camps, and implies a fundamental criticism of traditional aesthetic concepts, especially of the Aristotelian concept of mimesis and the Romantic concept of inversion – a criticism which allows the text to take an innovative (psycho)analytical approach to its subject. Finally, drawing upon Celan's own critical insights in some of his blasphemic poems, the essay articulates a historic line from the structure of the Christian phantasm of sacrifice to the Romantic-Modern artistic and social imagination.
