This article is composed by two different, though articulated, moments. First we intend to discuss some aspects of the difficulties related to literary historiography nowadays, by questioning the concept itself, as well as the difficulties in establishing a History of German Literature, when we consider some Austrian contemporary authors. After that, we discuss some aspects regarding the Austrian author Thomas Bernhard's last play, "Heroes' Square" ("Heldenplatz"), premièred in 1988. The whole process of writing and staging was marked by the author's design to cause an intentional scandal. As such, the very concept of the play involves its reception in a very fruitful dialectics between arts and society, and not resulting in a merely accidental provocation at the formal level. Thus, the play questions the very conception of art as something organic and self-enclosed, updating the brechtian epic tradition, decisive also for the development of the Brazilian theater, from the 50's until the present day.

  2. "Da aurora à meia-noite" e a questão da intermedialidade no expressionismo "From morn to midnight" and the question of intermediality in expressionism

This article aims to reassess the question of intermediality in expressionism in regard to "From morn to midnight". Written between 1912 and 1915 by Georg Kaiser and published in 1916, the text has been staged in many theatres from 1917 on. In 1920... more

This article aims to reassess the question of intermediality in expressionism in regard to "From morn to midnight". Written between 1912 and 1915 by Georg Kaiser and published in 1916, the text has been staged in many theatres from 1917 on. In 1920 director Karl Heinz Martin undertook its transposition into film. The first part of this investigation examines the text in relation to theatrical traditions and possible adaptations of cinematic techniques. It then analyzes the scenic aspects of its staging in the context of the new visuality of expressionist theatre while the third part takes a closer look at the cinematic adaption in the context of the long lasting debate on expressionist cinema. O presente artigo objetiva reavaliar a questão intermedial do expressionismo referente à "Da aurora à meia-noite", obra destacada de Georg Kaiser.

This study analyses five British translations of Bertolt Brecht's 'Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder'. Two of these translations were written by speakers of German, and three by well-known British playwrights with no knowledge of the source text language. Four have been produced in mainstream British theatres in the past twenty-five years. The study applies translation studies methodology to a textual analysis which focuses on the translation of techniques of linguistic "Verfremdung", as well as linguistic expression of the comedy and of the political dimension in the work. It thus closes the gap in current Brecht research in examining the importance of his idiosyncratic use of language to the translation and reception of his work in the UK. The study assesses the ways in which the translator and director are influenced by Brecht's legacy in the UK and in turn, what image of Brecht they mediate through the production on stage. To this end, the study throws light on the formation of Brecht's problematic reputation in the UK, and it also highlights the social and political circumstances in early twentieth century Germany which prompted Brecht to develop his theory of an epic theatre. The focus on a linguistic examination allows the translator's contribution to the production process to be isolated. Together with an investigation of the reception of each performance text, this in turn facilitates a more accurate assessment of the translator and director's respective influence in the process of transforming a foreign-language text onto a local stage. The analysis also sheds light on the different approaches taken by speakers of German, and playwrights creating an English version from a literal translation. It pinpoints losses in translation and adaptation, and suggests how future versions may avoid these.

The analysis of the Drama "Die Verfolgung und Ermordung Jean Paul Marats dargestellt durch die Schauspielgruppe des Hospizes zu Charenton unter der Anleitung des Herrn de Sade" (1964) by Peter Weiss shows how the author used surrealistic elements such as the theme of madness and the illogical structure of a play within a play. With this play, Weiss was enormously popular throughout the world, and his success as a modern German dramatist is second only to Brecht.
