Virtual Visiting Research Fellowships (VVRF) in SML (from 2022/23)

Outline of scheme: 

• 1 award per academic year
• Duration: either one semester only, or one entire academic year (Sept – June), to be agreed with the fellow
• Call to be issued each autumn, application deadline: end of January
• RC to consider applications and offer the fellowship to the chosen candidate
• Fellow to identify (at least) one colleague in SML with whom they wish to collaborate; this colleague to act as main facilitator for the fellow
• Fellow to undertake a pre-agreed programme of activities in the course of their tenure, DoR to oversee and facilitate the fellow's activities
• Honorarium: up to 250GBP for the acquisition of resources related to the fellow's project plus a fee of 500GBP per semester to be paid once all agreed activities have been delivered 

As part of its commitment to nurturing international research collaboration, the School of Modern Languages at Newcastle University is inviting applications for its new Virtual Visiting Research Fellowships programme. The scheme, which is supported by Newcastle University's Humanities Research Institute (NUHRI), aims to attract academics from non-UK countries to develop or extend collaborations with existing staff and – where appropriate – the research institutes, centres, or groups of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

In line with the values set out in our Vision and Strategy, we are particularly interested in establishing and enhancing sustainable and inclusive partnerships with academics whose work would help realise our goals to foster equality, diversity and inclusion, to enrich both academic research and wider society, and to create more equitable societies.

The scheme has been introduced in the context of Covid-19 to support international collaboration regardless of restrictions on international travel.

Application details:

1. Eligibility

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent experience and must have the support of an academic member of staff based in the School of Modern Languages. That academic member of staff will be responsible for virtually hosting the visiting fellow throughout their award period.

2. Benefits for Visiting Fellow

• Funding of up to £250 to be used for additional resources to support the applicant’s project.
• Full participation in the School's research activities, e.g. the research seminar series, the twice weekly writing workshops, or the research round-ups.
• Ability to take part in suitable Faculty-led research activities and initiatives.
• Opportunity to work with one or more of NU's institutes.
• Access to the Newcastle University library services and other relevant University services.

3. Expected contributions to the School of Modern Languages (to be confirmed subject to the fellow’s time zone and conditions of connectivity):

• Delivery of a paper on the fellow's project in the School's research seminar series.
• Development of closer research links with members of staff in SML who work in areas cognate to those of the fellow, including exploring collaborative funding applications.
• Participation in the weekly writing workshops.
• Brief presentation of the fellow's project in one of the research round-ups.
• Delivery of a workshop for postgraduates in the School.
• Acknowledgement of the fellowship in any publications arising from the work undertaken as a fellow.

How to apply

Interested candidates should submit an application which includes the following:

• A short CV, together with a complete list of publications and contact details of the fellow
• A covering letter that identifies the member(s) of staff the applicant wishes to collaborate with and that sets out a summary of the applicant's research expertise plus their reasons for applying for the online fellowship, including details of the envisaged outcomes arising from the fellowship (e.g. external funding applications, joint publications, and potential long-term research partnerships)
• A detailed outline of proposed activities and contribution to the research culture of the School of Modern Languages for the duration of the visit (max. 1,000 words)
• A breakdown of projected costs (e.g. for the acquisition of books or additional online resources to facilitate participation)
• Proposed duration of the fellowship (minimum: one semester; maximum: full academic year, from September to the end of June the following year)

Deadline for applications: 31 January

Applications will be assessed by a panel of academic staff drawn from the School of Modern Languages' Research Committee, and applicants will be notified of the outcome within approximately eight weeks.
