PhD opportunities in Modern Languages and Cultures / German Studies at the University of Warwick (UK)

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures (SMLC) at the University of Warwick invites applications from outstanding candidates for doctoral study commencing in September/October 2023.
The SMLC offers PhD programmes in French, German, Italian, and Hispanic Studies (all conceived in a global sense) as well as in Translation & Transcultural Studies. The School offers a broad range of expertise in each of these areas and welcomes enquiries on interdisciplinary topics.
Note that for the main funding opportunities the process is multi-staged, involving an application for admission and a separate application for funding. It is advisable, therefore, to discuss a possible application beforehand.
To express an interest, please send your CV and a two-page preliminary research proposal to smlcoffice@warwick.ac.uk (cc I.de-Smet@warwick.ac.uk) by early December, clearly noting the subject of your message as a PhD and/or scholarship enquiry in French / German / Italian / Hispanic / Translation & Transcultural Studies. (Please note: This preliminary proposal is not yet the one you will submit for your final application, but will help us decide which applications to pursue.)
For preliminary enquiries about a project related specifically to German Studies in a broad sense (literature, film, culture, history with a strong cultural component, social theory, German-Jewish history et al.), please get in touch at your earliest convenience with Dr Christine Achinger, PGGerman@warwick.ac.uk.
The SMLC will support (nominate) a select number of first-rate applications from prospective and qualifying existing students for the following funding opportunities whose calls are now open:
- Chancellor’s International Scholarships: The University offers up to 42 scholarships to the most outstanding international PhD applicants. For on how to apply for these University scholarships, please see here. The deadlines for the dual process of applying for admissions and funding are on Monday 12 December 2022 (23:59 pm GMT) (admissions) and Wednesday 14 December 2022 (23:59 GMT) (funding). All supporting documentation must be uploaded by 5 January 2023. We will be unable to support last-minute enquiries and/or applications for this highly competitive scheme. Discussion of your application with the SMLC should start late October/early November.
- AHRC Midlands 4 Cities Doctoral Training Partnership: the M4C DTP offers up to 60 fully funded scholarships for eligible students through its Open Competition across 8 Consortium institutions (including Warwick). New for 2023, the Stuart Hall Foundation (SHF) Scholarship will support at least two studentships a year for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic candidates to undertake doctoral research in arts and humanities. You will need to have submitted a separate application for a place of study (admission) to the University of Warwick.
The universities of Warwick and Coventry will host a joint online Application Writing Workshops for M4C candidates on 19 November 2022, 10 am-1 pm. We strongly encourage applicants to attend. Registration details and the link to subscribe will be posted on the M4C website (as above, scroll down).
