Job description
The successful candidate is expected to prepare, coordinate and teach new courses on European Culture and Literature, including German Culture and Literature and the interdisciplinary field of Literature and Music, in a multidisciplinary environment; and to conduct research and to supervise undergraduate, graduate and PhD students in these fields. S/he is expected to develop new ideas in research and education and to acquire funding (independently or jointly with other colleagues) for future research.
The selected candidate will work with other colleagues in the Chair of European Culture and Literature under the BA programme of European Languages and Cultures. S/he will be a member of an interdisciplinary team of researchers collaborating with other programmes and boards in the faculty and/or funded by externally raised funds and international guest researchers. The team covers many areas of Literary, Cultural and Political Sciences.
The position will involve a teaching load of 60% (including administration) and 40% research. The call is open to candidates with a background in Modern German Literature; the successful candidate should demonstrate his/her ability to connect effectively to the Chair's academic vision and ongoing research projects and contribute to the faculty’s excellence in teaching and research.
Qualifications
Candidates for the position must have:
- a PhD in Modern Literature or in Cultural Studies with special focus on German
- demonstrable knowledge in the interdisciplinary field of Literature and Music
- a demonstrable interest in European Cultural and Literary Studies and multidisciplinary work
- teaching experience at university level with relevant teaching qualifications (such as the University Taching Qualification (in Dutch: BKO)
- excellent research qualities, as evidenced by a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals
- ability to work both independently and in a (virtual) multidisciplinary team
- organizational competence, entrepreneurship and excellent communication skills
- a willingness to obtain research funding grants
- the ability to communicate, teach and publish in English (CEFR C1 level for reading, listening, writing, speaking) and German; knowledge of Dutch or willingness to learn it within a reasonable period of time may be one of the conditions for tenure (CEFR B2 for reading and listening, and CEFR B1 for writing and speaking) within two years
- the ability to meet deadlines and produce work of consistently high standards.
Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary, depending on qualifications and work experience, with a minimum of € 3,637 (salary scale 11 Dutch Universities) to a maximum of € 5,656 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position. The gross salary is excluding 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus and participation in a pension scheme for employees. Favourable tax agreements may apply to non-Dutch applicants.
The appointee will ideally commence as soon as possible.
The appointment will initially be on a temporary basis for 5 years and will become a permanent position following a positive ‘Results and Development’ assessment. The assessment for a permanent position is possible from the second year onwards.
