Assistant or Associate Professor of German Studies (St. Louis)

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Washington University in St. Louis seeks to hire a tenured or tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Associate or Assistant Professor. Successful candidates will have a strong grounding in German literary and cultural studies as well as an active research agenda in one or more of the following areas: 1) translation studies, 2) media studies 3) digital humanities, 4) nationalism, ethnicity, and race. We are especially interested in candidates whose research and teaching reflects a commitment to an expansive and inclusive model of German Studies and affirms the ongoing relevance of our field to the project of humanistic inquiry. Examples of such commitment might include adopting innovative comparative and interdisciplinary methodologies, developing new curricular initiatives, establishing partnerships with local and international communities that allow students to put their language skills and cultural competencies to work, or enhancing research with new modalities of scholarly output (e.g., digital, creative, or public-facing projects).

In addition to producing outstanding scholarship, responsibilities will include teaching in the undergraduate and graduate program at all levels of instruction and participating in departmental and university service. The new faculty member will also teach in the Program in Comparative Literature, which includes majors and minors in both Comparative Literature and Comparative Arts as well as a special PhD track for international writers.

Qualifications

The position requires a Ph.D. degree and native or near-native proficiency in German and English. Any appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a tenure review.
