Material/ität – Zwischenbilanz zur Konjunktur eines Begriffs, EXC 2020 “Temporal Communities: Doing Literature in a Global Perspective”, FU Berlin

Beginning

End

Workshop | Material/ität – Zwischenbilanz zur Konjunktur eines Begriffs

Organised by Karin Gludovatz and Matthias Warstat, Research Area 2: "Travelling Matters".

After the material dimension had long been ignored in the humanities, it has experienced a real boom in the last 20 years under the banner of New Materialism. This workshop aims to bring together current debates on material(ity) in art history, literature, theatre, film and restoration studies, in order to attempt an interdisciplinary 'stocktaking': How have the debates on material(s) and materiality become productive for the objects and conceptualisation of the various disciplines, and what have they achieved in terms of interdisciplinarity? Which object-related, methodological and theoretical impulses has materiality research provided.  Where has it perhaps also gone astray? How is this debate to be located theoretically and in the history of science, as well as in the humanities,  and what effects does it have on the understanding of artistic processes and the interaction of practice and theory? Which perspectives are currently emerging?

We welcome your interest and would like to ask you to register with Julia Schmit (j.schmit@fu-berlin.de). Due to the current guidelines for face-to-face events, unfortunately only a limited number of participants can be admitted.

The lectures and discussions will be held in German.
