MEMORY STUDIES IN LITERATURE

I am everywhere,

I don't forget,

I remember and treasure every moment,

I operate on Individual and Collective level

I hover on everyone’s mind

I am Life’s narrative

I am MEMORY

Memory studies emerges as an academic field to study the usage of it as a tool for remembering the past.  It was always a fixation for the social thinkers. However, it was only in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that memory was studied from a social perspective.  Literature plays a  significant role in exhibiting memory as a narrative tool to manifest various social, political and cultural issues.

How can we precisely describe the role of literature in the field of Memory Studies?

How do Memory Studies and literary theories relate to processes of remembrance in literature?

How do literary texts mimetically shape processes of memory?

How do scriptures and folk studies make use of Memory narratives?

Is the field of Digital Humanities providing impetus for research on memory and literature?

Memory studies has emerged as a multidisciplinary field, beginning with individual memory  and growing apparently as social memory. There are different forms of remembering thereby forming the collective representations of the past and also a reservoir of cultural resources which later transformed as Social and Historical Identities. Memories are part of a larger process of cultural negotiation, which defines memories as narratives and as fluid and mediated cultural and personal traces of the past (Sturken, 2008). This suggests that Memory as narratives are fluid and enforces representation of the past in personal and social action.
