The Department of German Studies at Cornell University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor/early Associate Professor position in literary and cultural studies, and critical theory. The successful candidate will build on and expand the distinctive intellectual traditions in German Studies with innovative thinking on race, migration, the environment, and/or transnational forms of belonging. Specializations in the 20th or 21st century are especially welcome. 

We are particularly interested in candidates whose work engages in one or more of the following areas in German Studies with vital contributions to interdisciplinary outreach and research: Black German Studies and Critical Race Studies, Environmental Humanities and Medical Humanities, Migration and Diaspora Studies, Asian German Studies, Postcolonial Studies and Decolonization.    

Ph.D. in German Studies or a closely related field, evidence of excellent teaching and outstanding scholarship, German fluency, and excellent English writing skills are required. The department is looking for candidates who can support increasingly diverse student bodies through inclusive research, teaching, and advising.   

Two-course teaching load per semester entails variable assignments, including upper-level language, literature, and culture classes in German, first-year writing seminars in English, upper-level outreach classes in English, graduate seminars in the applicant’s primary field.

Preliminary interviews will be scheduled via Zoom mid-December 2022.
