PhD Assistantships, Louisiana State University (LSU)

Please consider applying to the graduate programin the Department of French Studies at Louisiana State University. Students holding BA or MA degrees may apply directly to the PhD program; students holding BA degrees may choose to apply for the MA degree program, with an option to pursue the PhD subsequently.

All applicants to the PhD program will automatically be considered for the Edouard Glissant Teaching Assistantships in French Studies, which comes with a stipend of up to $25K annually. We will be accepting students on a rolling bases beginning in January, with a final application deadline of February 1, 2018.

Graduate students in the Department of French Studies at LSU have the opportunity to study and research in all areas of French and Francophone literatures, from the medieval period to contemporary writings of the Francophone world. Our faculty have depth of expertise in contemporary French philosophy and theory; medieval and early-modern studies; Francophone literature of sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia; contemporary poetry; gender studies; sociolinguistics; and interdisciplinary approaches incorporating visual arts, film, performance and digital humanities. We take particular pride in our mentorship of each individual student. 

Some highlights of graduate study in the Department of French Studies at LSU include:

• The Center for French and Francophone Studies, a French government-designated Center of Excellence, which holds a French-government PUF grant in conjunction with the Université des Antilles.
• Home to one of the largest undergraduate French language programs in the country, our department offers graduate students a wide array of teaching experience.
• LSU French PhDs have accepted tenure-track and instructional positions at New York University, Georgetown University, University of Miami, Carnegie Mellon University, Furman University, Truman State College, Marquette University, and others.
• Graduate students regularly help to coordinate and teach for DFS undergraduate study-abroad programs in Paris, the French Alps, and the Caribbean.
• Now in its fourteenth year, the DFS Annual Graduate Student Conference provides a venue for formal presentation of original research by graduate students and senior keynote speakers from around the country and the world.
• We regularly support graduate student travel and participation in special programs such as the Dartmouth Summer Institute in French Cultural Studies, a prestigious four-week program that features renowned scholars from both sides of the Atlantic.
• We enjoy a special relationship with the Francophone community in Arnaudville, Louisiana, with opportunities for immersion programs in Cajun French language and culture.
