The Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS) at Heidelberg University, Germany, is accepting applications for scholarships to pursue a doctorate in Ibero-American Studies. The scholarships are granted by the Landesgraduiertenförderungsprogramm of the Land Baden-Württemberg and support doctoral candidates in carrying out their doctoral projects within the framework of the HCIAS research training group “Communication and Society in Ibero-America”.

Research training group
The interdisciplinary research training group gives doctoral candidates the opportunity to work with researchers from Heidelberg and international partners with diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The constant interdisciplinary dialogue with both peers and senior scholars provides doctoral candidates with comprehensive training oriented toward complex research questions related to communication and society in Ibero-America and allows them to develop their individual scholarly profile at an early stage of their careers. Applicant’s profile
We seek reliable, highly motivated applicants with a spirit for teamwork in an international research environment working on interdisciplinary issues relating to communication and society in the Ibero-American macro-region. To be eligible for a scholarship, applicants

  • have completed their master’s (or equivalent) in Area Studies, Humanities, or Social Sciences with an above-average grade;
  • have a strong command of the theories and methods relevant for their project proposal;
  • have a strong command of English and proficiency of Spanish or Portuguese;
  • should have previous experience in research contexts (e.g. research stays, internships within research groups/institutes, student/graduate assistant, etc.).

Provisions
Scholarships are comprised of

  • a monthly stipend of €1,365;
  • a lump sum of €110 per month for material and travel expenses;
  • if applicable, a family allowance.

The scholarships are awarded for up to three years, starting in November 2021.

Application documents and procedure
To apply for one of these scholarships at the HCIAS, please submit the following documents in one single PDF document via e-mail to doctorate@hcias.uni-heidelberg.de by September 17, 2021:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Motivation letter (max. 1.5 pages, explaining the specific motivation for your application referring to your thematic and regional areas of interest and specifying your academic background)
  • Exposé of the project (max. 5 pages, including timeline)
  • University degrees (bachelor’s, master’s, etc.)
  • Proof of English and Spanish/Portuguese competency (if not a native speaker)
  • One letter of recommendation (written by a university professor)

Interviews with the selection committee will take place at the end of September 2021.
