Rhythm—as physiological given, anthropological practice, and cultural structure—encompasses an exceptionally broad range of phenomena and approaches: biology and the body, labor, communication (linguistic and otherwise), human and natural temporalities, art making (including poetry, music, dance, the visual arts), perception, social or political structures. It is part of individual everyday reality and experience, structuring our spatiotemporal experience in fundamental ways and shaping social processes, modes of inquiry, interactions and developments. In their training and combined expertise, participants represent the disciplines of literary studies, philosophy, music, rhetoric, medieval studies, linguistics, art history, film, and political science. The conference will focus on the core area of language—spoken and written, literary and non-literary—while the range of presentations and discussion will highlight the extent to which linguistic practices and our knowledge of rhythmic processes and practices shape and are shaped by fields such as philosophy, music, pedagogy, culture studies, film, and visual media art.
This conference is free and open to the public. No registration is required.
