We are pleased to announce the 2nd Edition of our Interdisciplinary Conference on Literature and Image: “Revisiting Dystopia in Literature and the Visual Arts”, to be held at Universidad Católica de Murcia (UCAM) on March 26-27, 2020

Our main focus will be on the analysis and discussion of the transformations undergone by the dystopian genre since 1948 onwards within the fields of fiction, the visual arts, and other forms of popular culture. Substantial emphasis will be put on the analysis of dystopia as a window opened onto situations of crisis, conflict or destruction which nonetheless carry the promise of a new beginning and (either implicitly or explicitly) advocate for the healing rediscovery of human values and an orderly reconstruction of society

  • Resistance against institutionalized corruption. mass-media manipulation.
  • Technological advances. the rise of synthetic identities.
  • Running away: the rediscovery of society and one’s self.
  • Power relations. the effects of transgression. interpersonal bonds.
  • Reconstruction processes: restoring one’s identity and transforming society.
  • Moral/ethical challenges and responsibility: eugenics, cloning, genetic engineering, trans-humanism, etc.
  • Hope in the wake of adversity (illness, stigmatization, social degradation…).
  • Re-assessing the possibilities of humans in the wake of collective crisis.
  • Virtual or alternative realities. mind-programming routines.

Plenary speaker: Prof. María Teresa Gibert Maceda (UNED)
