2020 Peter Lang Young Scholars Competition: German Studies in America

Peter Lang Oxford is delighted to announce the 2020 Peter Lang Young Scholars Competition: German Studies in America.

Proposals are invited from US early career scholars ­in German Studies for academic monographs to be evaluated by a distinguished editorial board. The winner of the competition will receive a contract to publish the volume with Peter Lang.

Proposals for the German Studies competition should be submitted to Laurel Plapp (L.PLAPP@peterlang.com) by 15 January 2020 and include an abstract (including chapter synopses), CV and a sample chapter (5,000 to 10,000 words in length) in separate Microsoft Word documents.

Proposals are welcome from scholars working on any aspect of German Studies and may be written in German or English. Research that fits within the scope of the Peter Lang book series German Studies in America is especially encouraged (please see below and on the series webpage: http://www.peterlang.com/view/serial/GSA). Proposals under review elsewhere should not be submitted.

The winner will be offered a contract for a fully funded book to be published within six months of receipt of the complete and approved manuscript. Planned manuscripts should be 60,000 to 100,000 words in length. Authors will be expected to copy-edit the manuscript in accordance with the style guidelines provided.

Applicants should be early career scholars with connections to the United States:

  • They should have been awarded a PhD between 2014 and 2019 or expect to be awarded a PhD in 2020.
  • They should be living in the United States orhave completed some or all of their postgraduate education at a US university.

Decisions will be made by 31 May 2020 and the winner will be notified shortly thereafter.

German Studies in America publishes research across the field of German studies in the broadest sense, from literary criticism to cultural studies. The editors welcome scholarly work that takes an innovative approach to German, Swiss, or Austrian history, literature, politics, philosophy, national identity, religion, popular culture, film, music, and/or visual art. We are also eager to consider projects that adopt interdisciplinary and intersectional approaches as well as studies with theoretical approaches including psychoanalysis, gender studies, feminism, Marxism, critical race studies, etc. We publish scholarly monographs, translations and edited volumes of essays in both German and English. This series adheres to the highest academic standards and is peer reviewed.
