    "Studies of affect and emotions have blossomed in recent decades across the humanities, neurosciences, and social sciences. In music scholarship, they have often built on the discipline's attention to what music theorists since the Renaissance have described as music's unique ability to arouse passions in listeners. In this timely volume, the editors seek to combine this 'affective turn' with the 'sound turn' in the humanities, which has profitably shifted attention from the visual to the aural, as well as a more recent 'philosophical turn' in music studies. Accordingly, the volume maps out a new territory for research at the intersection of music, philosophy, and sound studies. The essays in Sound and Affect look at objects and experiences in which correlations of sound and affect reside, in music and beyond: the voice as it speaks, stutters, cries, or sings; music, whether vocal, instrumental, or electronic; our sonic environments, whether natural or man-made, and our responses to them. As argued here, far from being stable, correlations of sound and affect are influenced by factors as diverse as race, class, gender, and social and political experience. Examining these factors is key to the project, which gathers contributions from a cross-disciplinary roster of scholars including both established as well as a wealth of new voices. The essays are grouped thematically into sections that move from politics and ethics, to reflections on pre-and post-human "musicking," to the notions of affective listening and music temporalities, to are examination of historical understandings of music and affect. This agenda-setting collection will prove indispensable to anyone interested in innovative approaches to the study of sound and its many intersection with affect and emotions"--

    Culture, media, and science are largely determined by noise. By interference and »noise«, un-intended, nonsensical, and undesired sounds are meant - those which are traditionally the opposite of linguistic and musical sense-making sounds. Even recent research takes this view. However, concentrated interdisciplinary work on listening to sounds of negation, i.e. »un-sounds«, can bring to light previously unknown structures, the analysis potential of which for cultural studies is difficult to exaggerate. The contributions to this volume focus especially on the 20th Century, since the technical capabilities in sound recording have resulted in specific postures Kultur, Medien, Wissenschaften sind maßgeblich von Geräuschen bestimmt. Als Interferenzen und »noise« sind un-intendierte, un-sinnige, un-erwünschte Laute traditionell das Gegenteil von sprachlicher und musikalischer Sinnstiftung - auch in jüngerer Forschung. Doch das konzentrierte interdisziplinäre 'Hin-Hören' auf solche negierten Laute, also Un-Laute, lässt bisher unerkannte Strukturen zutage treten, deren Analysepotenzial für die Kulturwissenschaften derzeit kaum zu überschätzen ist. Die Beiträge des Bandes konzentrieren sich besonders auf das 20. Jahrhundert, seit die technischen Möglichkeiten der Schallaufzeichnung spezifische Dispositive hervorgebracht haben

Doch wie viele semantische Spuren sind im Klang klassisch-moderner und Neuer Musik tatsächlich haften geblieben? Welche neuartigen Weltbezüge von Klang können jüngere Konzeptästhetiken herstellen?     This volume contributes to the study of early English poetics. In these essays, several related approaches and fields of study radiate outward from poetics, including stylistics, literary history, word studies, gender studies, metrics, and textual criticism. By combining and redirecting these traditional scholarly methods, as well as exploring newer ones such as object-oriented ontology and sound studies, these essays demonstrate how poetry responds to its intellectual, literary, and material contexts. The contributors propose to connect the small (syllables, words, and phrases) to the large (histories, emotions, faiths, secrets). In doing so, they attempt to work magic on the texts they consider: turning an ordinary word into something strange and new, or demonstrating texture, difference, and horizontality where previous eyes had perceived only smoothness, sameness, and verticality

The results are a new account of Victorian translation and fresh readings both of canonical poems (including those by Browning and Tennyson) and of non-canonical poems (including those by Michael Field). Revealing Victorian poets to be crucial agents of intercultural negotiation in an era of empire, Annmarie Drury shows why and how meter matters so much to them, and locates the origins of translation studies within Victorian conundrums. It is not a traditional commentary, although it is often concerned with problems of interpretation and language, nor is it simply what is generally understood by a literary study, although it often discusses the wider themes of the narrative. It is a close reading of the text concentrating on the developing meanings of words within the structuring of the play. In particular, Simon Goldhill focuses on the text's interests in language and its control, in sexuality and sexual difference, and in the progression and description of events. Dr Goldhill links a sound philological knowledge with material drawn widely from modern literary theory and anthropological studies.     This book applies rigorous economic analysis to the question of sustainable development. It considers the inter-relationship between growth and sustainability showing that one does not necessarily exist to the detriment of the other. Sustainability may be measured and defined in national accounting terms and the contributors explore a potentially powerful theoretical definition. Case studies on Morocco and China examine some of the domestic policy requirements of sustainability, revealing the desirability of quite complex combinations of policies. International policy aspects of sustainability are considered, such as technology transfer and the establishment of workable agreements to reduce global pollution. The volume demonstrates the need to build the sustainability debate on sound economic foundations, and the ability of economists to provide such foundations.

    Die vorliegende Studie ergänzt den Forschungsstand zur Wirkung visueller Kommunikation politischer Akteure durch eine innovative Methodenkombination aus Eye-Tracking und Real-Time-Response-Messung. Die Studie untersucht, inwiefern nonverbales Verhalten sowohl die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit als auch die (spontanen) Urteile von RezipientInnen beeinflusst. Außerdem wird der Zusammenhang aus Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung analysiert. Dazu sahen TeilnehmerInnen der Studie Videos von Politikerreden entweder mit oder ohne Ton. Befunde zeigen, dass spezifisches körpersprachliches Verhalten (z.B. emotionale Gesichtsausdrücke oder Handgesten) zum einen die visuelle Aufmerksamkeit lenkt. Zum anderen haben sowohl verbale Äußerungen als auch nonverbales Verhalten Auswirkungen auf die spontane Urteilsbildung über Politiker. Effekte nonverbaler Kommunikation treten insbesondere dann auf, wenn kein Ton verfügbar ist. Die Ergebnisse deuten zudem auf einzelne Zusammenhänge zwischen Blickverhalten und Urteilsbildung hin This study complements research on the effects of visual communication by politicians by combining eye tracking and real-time response measurement. It investigates the extent to which non-verbal behaviour affects the visual attention of and (spontaneous) impression formation among viewers, while also analysing the relationship between gaze behaviour and impression formation. Participants watched videos of political speeches either with or without sound. The results show that specific non-verbal behaviour (e.g. emotional facial expressions or hand gestures) direct visual attention. Furthermore, both verbal statements and non-verbal communication affect spontaneous opinion formation about politicians. The effects of non-verbal communication occur especially if no verbal information is available. Moreover, the results indicate some relation between attention distribution and impression formation

    "Bringing together current intermedial discourses on Shakespeare, music, and dance with the affective turn in the humanities, Dramaturgies of Love in Romeo and Juliet offers a unique and highly innovative transdisciplinary discussion of 'unspeakable' love in one of the most famous love stories in literary history: the tragic romance of Romeo and Juliet. Through in-depth case studies and historical contextualisation, this book showcases how the 'woes that no words can sound' of Shakespeare's iconic lovers nevertheless have found expression not only in his verbal poetry, but also in non-verbal adaptations of the play in 19th-century symphonic music and 20th- and 21st-century theatre dance. Combining methodological approaches from diverse disciplines, including affect theory, musicology and dance studies, this study opens up a new perspective onto the artistic representation of love, defining amorous emotion as a generically transformative constellation of dialogic performativity. Anhand des »Nibelungenlied« werden Möglichkeiten synoptischer Textlektüren diskutiert. An die Stelle des Gegensatzes von Minnesang und Sangspruchdichtung tritt die Suche nach dem Politischen der Lyrik. Mit »Inschriftlichkeit« und »Urkundlichkeit« werden lang übersehene Formen von Schriftlichkeit ins Rampenlicht gerückt. Historisch orientierte Erzählungen lassen eingespielte disziplinäre Grenzziehungen fragil erscheinen. Netzwerkanalysen visualisieren Personenbeziehungen und machen die Prominenz mittelalterlicher Autoren sichtbar. Ein Rückblick auf die Fiktionalitätsdebatte eröffnet Räume, um über mittelalterliche Erzählwelten nachzudenken - und die Unterscheidung von Text und Literatur bietet schließlich den Anlass für die Frage, was eine mediävistische »Textwissenschaft« sein könnte. Auf breiter Grundlage wird also Grundlegendes verhandelt und werden Optionen gesucht für eine Mittelaltergermanistik des 21. Jahrhunderts.     "Literature's Sensuous Geographies offers a study of place in postcolonial literature and theory from other than the socio-cultural and political angles that have traditionally dominated the field. Moslund explores "sensuous geographies" (something that has so far been neglected in the study of place in literature) as opening up other than discursive relations to the world - other, non-territorial modes of being-in-the-world. The book develops a sense-aesthetic mode of reading (a "topo-poetics") and in close-readings of Conrad, Blixen, Coetzee and Achebe (among others), Moslund explores dimensions in literature that open up the place world as produced by desubjectified intensities of smell, sound, sight, touch, etc. Sense-aesthetic qualities of literary language are shown in this way as radically challenging the rationalizing logic of modernity (the inner logic of imperialism), at the heart of which Moslund identifies a disciplining of the senses and a reduction of the sensuous openness of reality. With his study of sensuous geographies in literature, Moslund makes a notable shift in the field of postcolonial studies and geocriticism from discourse analysis to aesthetic analysis"--

    Bringing together media studies and environmental humanities, the contributors to Saturation develop saturation as a heuristic to analyze phenomena in which the elements involved are difficult or impossible to separate. In ordinary language, saturation describes the condition of being thoroughly soaked, while in chemistry it is the threshold at which something can be maximally dissolved or absorbed in a solution. Contributors to this collection expand notions of saturation beyond water to consider saturation in sound, infrastructure, media, Big Data, capitalism, and visual culture. Essays include analyses of the thresholds of HIV detectability in bloodwork, militarism's saturation of oceans, and the deleterious effects of the saturation of cellphone and wi-fi signals into the human body. By channeling saturation to explore the relationship between media, the environment, technology, capital, and the legacies of settler colonialism, Saturation illuminates how elements, the natural world, and anthropogenic infrastructures, politics, and processes exist in and through each other.Contributors.     "Embroidering the Scarlet A traces the evolution of the "fallen woman" from the earliest novels to recent representations in fiction and film, including The Scarlet Letter, The Sound and the Fury, The Color Purple, and Love Medicine, and the films Juno and Mother and Child. Interweaving her own experience as a pregnant teen forced to surrender her daughter and pledge secrecy for decades, Ellerby interrogates "out-of-wedlock" motherhood, mapping the ways archetypal scarlet women and their children have been exiled as social pariahs, pardoned as blameless pawns, and transformed into empowered women. Drawing on narrative, feminist, and autobiographical theory, the book examines the ways that the texts have affirmed, subverted, or challenged dominant thinking and the prevailing moral standards as they have shifted over time. Using her own life experience and her uniquely informed perspective, Ellerby assesses the effect these stories have on the lives of real women and children. By inhabiting the space where ideology meets narrative, Ellerby questions the constricting historical, cultural, and social parameters of female sexuality and permissible maternity. As a feminist cultural critique, a moving autobiographical journey, and an historical investigation that addresses both fiction and film, Embroidering the Scarlet A will appeal to students and scholars of literature, history, sociology, psychology, women's and gender studies, and film studies.     In Surface Relations Vivian L. Huang traces how Asian and Asian American artists have strategically reworked the pernicious stereotype of inscrutability as a dynamic antiracist, feminist, and queer form of resistance. Following inscrutability in literature, visual culture, and performance art since 1965, Huang articulates how Asian American artists take up the aesthetics of Asian inscrutability-such as invisibility, silence, unreliability, flatness, and withholding-to express Asian American life. Through analyses of diverse works by performance artists (Tehching Hsieh, Baseera Khan, Emma Sulkowicz, Tseng Kwong Chi), writers (Kim Fu, Kai Cheng Thom, Monique Truong), and video, multimedia, and conceptual artists (Laurel Nakadate, Yoko Ono, Mika Tajima), Huang challenges neoliberal narratives of assimilation that erase Asianness. In this "age of vision," authorities' concerns about whether and how worshipers listened to sacred speech spurred Giotto and other artists to reconfigure sacred stories to activate listening and ultimately bypass phenomenal experience for attitudes of inner receptivity. New naturalistic styles served that work, prompting viewers to give voice to depicted speech and guiding them toward spiritually fruitful auditory discipline. This study reimagines narrative pictures as site-specific extensions of a cultural system that made listening a meaningful practice. Close reading of religious texts, poetry, and art historiography augments Shoaf's novel approach to pictorial naturalism and art's multisensorial dimensions"
