    Since antiquity it has been known that without the freedom to speak, and later to publish, the road to fanaticism and totalitarianism lies wide open. This book focuses on how the 'press' reacted, when press freedom was under strain in number of cases in the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. Contemporary literature on the freedom of the press has its focus on the role of the press in relation to democracy; how media influences democracy, how the political and the ethical aspects are managed etc. This book is on the one hand part of this central discourse. On the other hand, it attempts to broaden views by focusing on the historical and contemporary experiences, when press freedom was under strain in significant periods since the 1930s. Also, its geographical scope is broader than most books, and it brings together experienced journalists and known academics adding to the dynamism of the discussion and challenging the reader to find his own position concerning censorship, self-censorship and press ethics.

    The renowned Russian writer Leo Tolstoy created a realistic masterpiece in Anna Karenina (1878). In the same work, moreover, he utilized allegory and symbol to an extent and at a level of sophistication unknown in his other works. In Browning’s study, the author identifies and analyzes previously unnoticed or only briefly mentioned “linkages and keystones” found in two highly developed clusters of symbols, arising from Anna’s momentous train ride and peasant nightmares, and of allegories, rooted in Vronsky’s disastrous steeplechase. Within this labyrinth of symbol and allegory lies embedded much of the novel’s most significant meaning. This study will be of particular interest to students and scholars of Russian literature, Tolstoy, symbol, allegory, structuralism, and moral criticism.

Hier hat sich seit einigen Jahren ein ausdifferenziertes System temporärer Arbeitsmigration entwickelt. Die Studie untersucht die spezifischen politischen und ökonomischen Rahmenbedingungen, auf die die (vor allem polnischen) Saisonarbeiter treffen, und die im Migrationsprozess entstehenden Migrantennetzwerke. Anhand einer theorieoffenen Vorgehensweise werden die Leitparadigmen der gegenwärtigen Migrationsforschung - Integrationsansatz, Transnationalismus, Systemtheorie - daraufhin befragt, welche Erklärungen ihr jeweiliger Beobachtungsrahmen in Bezug auf das Phänomen der temporären Arbeitsmigration liefern kann.

    In the past few years the image of tender procedures in which Dutch public clients selected an architect has been dominated by distressing newspaper headlines. Architects fear that the current tender culture will harm the quality of our built environment due to a potential lack of diversity, creativity and innovation in architectural design. Clients often allow legal requirements to overrule their actual wishes. The current practice of architect selection by European public clients has its roots in three distinct systems: 1) tendering for services and works, 2) the selective search to identify a suitable architect or design team, and 3) the architectural competition. It is these diverse roots of the selection process that appear to cause conflicts between the legal rationality of procurement and the psychological rationality of public decision making. This PhD research addresses the origin of these problems as currently experienced by public commissioning clients in architect selection and proposes pragmatic implications for future practice. It is therefore of interest for commissioning clients, management consultants, policy makers and legal advisors but also for designers and researchers in the field of architecture and decision making. Based on four empirical cases the author shows that during architect selection the rational legal requirements clash with the psychological process of decision making. Decision makers only start to make sense of the proposed designs once they are confronted with the alternatives. It is therefore almost impossible for clients to design a selection procedure and announce the criteria and weighing factors up front, as required by procurement law. The scientific underpinning of the findings is found in four theoretical perspectives on value judgements in design and the latest decision theories in which emotion, intuition, and expertise play prominent roles. In the conclusions five sensemaking processes are distinguished and several underlying situational characteristics are identified that influence the selection process, such as complexity, uncertainty and decision support. The thesis proposes fifteen factors for a successful design of a tender procedure to select an architect. It also offers recommendations for change of the current Dutch practice.

    This dissertation offers a history of modern commercial advertising during the first half of the twentieth century and demonstrates that despite cultural barriers, advertising colonized the everyday world of Germans and began to encroach upon “German culture”. The work shows that the construct of “German culture” was not only defined by bourgeois high culture, but rather increasingly by factors from consumer culture. The imagery of advertising shaped national icons, created modified “surfaces” (for example, through illuminated ad media) and perceptions of space. Likewise, the logic of market differentiation and marketing began to determine social interactions as well as political communication (Hitler branding). This development did not progress without conflict: Debates surrounding both advertising as well as the direct confrontation between cultural critics and advertisers make clear that there was a massive collision between two mentalities. This allowed a conflict to emerge between traditional, guild thinking, high cultural representations and a putatively authentic aesthetics of content, on the one hand, and on the other hand, a “world of appearances” and aesthetic of the exterior form. One question in particular played a central role in this debate, namely: the extent to which capitalism, the market economy, consumption and the aesthetics of the modern Lebenswelt with its specific (commercial) texture were in accord with ideas of “Germanness.” Die Arbeit präsentiert die Geschichte der modernen Wirtschaftswerbung in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts und zeigt, dass Werbung trotz kultureller Barrieren die Alltagswelten der Deutschen kolonialisierte und Einfluss auf die „deutsche Kultur“ nahm. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass das Konstrukt der „deutschen Kultur“ nicht ausschließlich durch die bürgerliche Hochkultur definiert wurde, sondern zunehmend auch durch Einflüsse der Konsumkultur bestimmt war. Die Bilderwelten der Werbung prägten nationale Ikonen, schufen (bspw. durch Leuchtwerbung) modifizierte "Oberflächen" und Raumwahrnehmungen, ebenso wie die Logik der Marktdifferenzierung und des Marketing soziale Interaktionen als auch die politische Kommunikation (Hitler als Marke) zu bestimmen begann. Diese Entwicklung verlief nicht konfliktfrei. Sowohl die Debatten über Werbung als auch die direkte Konfrontation zwischen Kulturkritikern und Werbern verdeutlichen den massiven Zusammenprall zweier Mentalitäten, die den Konflikt von traditionellem zünftigem Denken, hochkultureller Repräsentation sowie einer vermeintlich authentischen Ästhetik des Inhalts auf der einen Seite und einer "Welt des Scheins" und einer Ästhetik der äußeren Form auf der anderen Seite hervortreten ließ. In dieser Debatte spielte eine Frage eine zentrale Rolle: inwieweit Kapitalismus, Marktwirtschaft, Konsum und die Ästhetik der modernen Lebenswelt mit ihrer spezifischen (werblichen) Oberflächenstruktur mit Vorstellungen "des Deutschen" zu vereinbaren waren.

Present day writers of New Testament fiction and drama are usually considered as part of a tradition formed by mid-to-late-twentieth-century authors such as Robert Graves, Nikos Kazantzakis and Anthony Burgess. This book looks back further to the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, when the templates of the majority of today’s Gospel fictions and dramas were set down.     This work examines the expression of Love in an interdisciplinary approach to literature and music in Germany and Russia during the Romantic Period. The starting point is Socrates’ classical discourse about Love and his definition of it, which Plato recorded in his Symposium. This will be applied to and examined in the Romantic Period, first in German and Russian literature and later in Music. What changes occur in the reception of this term? What differences or possible parallels can be determined in the two cultures and mentalities that are different at first sight? What is the influence of the respective artists on these changes? The results will be applied to the individual works of the writers A. Pushkin and E.T.A. Hoffmann as well as the musical settings of these works by the composers P. Tchaikovsky and R. Schumann. This examination, which is based primarily on literature and literary criticism, places the concept of Love in the foreground, even above the person or the work of the respective artist. Therefore, the primary goal of this work is to follow the reception of Plato’s “theory of love” during the Romantic Period. The concepts of one’s own inconstancy, the development of beauty, and the path of love correspond with the metacognitive philosophy of the Romantics. The subject of love has particular significance today because of the media’s frequent discussions about the crisis of moral values. Love is transmedial. It transcends the subjective lives of humans, the objective external conditions, culture and mentality, literature and music; and it remains a desire, an ambition, an idea. Love is active and bridges every boundary as a communicational code or as nature’s utmost attempt to lead an individual out of himself and to another. Diese Arbeit untersucht den Begriff der Liebe interdisziplinär in der Literatur und in der Musik in Deutschland und Russland in der Epoche der Romantik. Ausgegangen wird von der antiken Rede des Sokrates über Liebe und seiner Definition von ihr, welche Platon in seinem „Symposion“ nach Sokrates aufschreibt. Diese wird in die Zeit der Romantik zuerst in die deutsche und russische Literatur und später auf die Musik übertragen und untersucht. Welche Veränderungen treten im Verständnis des Begriffes auf? Welche Unterschiede oder möglichen Parallelen in den zwei auf den ersten Blick unterschiedlichen Kulturen und Mentalitäten sind vorhanden? Welchen Einfluss nehmen die Persönlichkeiten der Künstler auf diese Veränderungen? Die Ergebnisse werden auf einzelne Werke der Schriftsteller, A. Puschkin und E.T.A. Hoffmann, und auf die Vertonungen dieser Werke der Komponisten, P. Tschaikowski und R. Schumann, übertragen. Diese, in erster Linie literaturwissenschaftliche Untersuchung stellt den Begriff der Liebe in den Vordergrund, noch vor der Person oder dem Werk des Künstlers. Somit ist das vorrangige Ziel der Arbeit, der Rezeption der platonischen Liebestheorie während der Epoche der Romantik nachzugehen. Der Gedanke der eigenen Wandelbarkeit und der Entwicklung des Schönen und der Liebe als Stufenweg korrespondiert mit der Erkenntnisphilosophie der Romantiker. Das Thema der Liebe hat auch in der heutigen Zeit eine wichtige Bedeutung, vor allem weil die Medien immer öfter von einer Krise der moralischen Werte sprechen. Die Liebe ist transmedial, sie durchwandert das subjektive Leben des Menschen, die objektiven äußeren Voraussetzungen, die Kultur und die Mentalität, die Literatur und die Musik und sie bleibt eine Sehnsucht, ein Streben, eine Idee. Sie ist aktiv und überbrückt jegliche Schranken als Kommunikationscode oder als höchster Versuch, den die Natur macht, um das Individuum aus sich heraus und zu dem anderen hinzuführen.     Ciaran Carson is one of the most challenging and inventive of contemporary Irish writers, exhibiting verbal brilliance, formal complexity, and intellectual daring across a remarkably varied body of work. This study considers the full range of his oeuvre, in poetry, prose, and translations, and discusses the major themes to which he returns, including: memory and history, narrative, language and translation, mapping, violence, and power. It argues that the singularity of Carson’s writing is to be found in his radical imaginative engagements with ideas of space and place. The city of Belfast, in particular, occupies a crucially important place in his texts, serving as an imaginative focal point around which his many other concerns are constellated. The city, in all its volatile mutability, is an abiding frame of reference and a reservoir of creative impetus for Carson’s imagination. Accordingly, the book adopts an interdisciplinary approach that draws upon geography, urbanism, and cultural theory as well as literary criticism. It provides both a stimulating and thorough introduction to Carson’s work, and a flexible critical framework for exploring literary representations of space.

After an extensive introduction that serves as a ‘state of the art’, the volume is divided into four main parts: Philosophical Reflections, Relevance of the Chronotope for Literary History, Chronotopical Readings and Some Perspectives for Literary Theory. These thematic categories contain contributions by well-established Bakhtin specialists such as Gary Saul Morson and Michael Holquist, as well as a number of essays by scholars who have published on this subject before.     This book presents a comprehensive examination of Chinese consumer behaviour and challenges the previously dichotomous interpretation of the consumption of Western and non-Western brands in China. The dominant position is that Chinese consumers are driven by a desire to imitate the lifestyles of Westerners and thereby advance their social standing locally. The alternative is that consumers reject Western brands as a symbolic gesture of loyalty to their nation-state. Drawing from survey responses and in depth interviews with Chinese consumers in both rural and urban areas, Kelly Tian and Lily Dong find that consumers situate Western brands within select historical moments. This embellishment attaches historical meanings to Western brands in ways that render them useful in asserting preferred visions of the future China. By highlighting how Western brands are used in contests for national identity, Consumer-Citizens of China challenges the notion of the "patriot’s paradox" and answers scholars’ questions as to whether Chinese nationalists today allow for a Sino-Western space where the Chinese can love China without hating the West. Positioning neo-Victorian novels as dynamic participants in the contemporary historical imaginary, it explores their use of the Victorians' own vocabularies of history, memory and loss to re-member the nineteenth century today. While her focus is neo-Victorian fiction, Mitchell positions these novels in relation to debates about historical fiction's contribution to historical knowledge since the eighteenth century. Her use of memory discourse as a framework for understanding the ways in which they do lay claim to historical recollection, one which opens up a range of questions beyond historical fidelity on the one hand, and the problematics of representation on the other, suggests new ways of thinking about contemporary historical fiction and its prevalence, popular appeal, and nmnenonic function today.

Op hun beurt waren toneelstukken, gedichten en liederen bepalend voor het verloop, de werking en de betekenis van het stedelijke vorstenfeest. Deze publicatie onderzoekt voor het eerst de interactie tussen dergelijke vorstenfeesten en literatuur binnen een breed geografisch en tijdskader.     Im letzten Jahrzehnt vor der Zeitenwende wird im Norden des ephesischen Staatsmarktes ein Gebäude errichtet, das uns heute als eines der wenigen sicher identifizierten Prytaneia der griechisch-römischen Welt bekannt ist. Als Hauptkultgebäude der Polis fungierte das Prytaneion als Amtssitz der höchsten magistratischen Beamten der Stadt, als Ort öffentlicher Ehrenmäler und als der Ort, an dem der sog. Staatsherd untergebracht war – ein ewig brennendes Feuer, das das Leben der Stadt symbolisieren sollte. Zwischen den Jahren 2007 und 2009 wurde das Prytaneion von Ephesos einer abschließenden archäologischen und bauhistorischen Analyse unterzogen. Dabei konnten nicht nur die Baugeschichte, die Funktion und die Struktur der Anlage weitgehend geklärt werden, sondern auch Transformationsprozesse an einem antiken Monumentalbau nachgezeichnet werden, die einen Funktionswandel von einem kaiserzeitlichen Verwaltungs-, Repräsentations- und Kultgebäude zu einem einfachen byzantinischen Werkstatts- und Wohnviertel dokumentieren. Das wechselhafte Schicksal dieses Komplexes, das sich über die ersten acht nachchristlichen Jahrhunderte verfolgen lässt, soll im Zuge dieser Publikation dargelegt werden. A building erected north of the Ephesus state market in the final decade before Christ is today one of the few prytaneia that have been identified with certainty in the Greek-Roman world. A prytaneion was the main cult building of the polis; it functioned as the official seat of the city’s highest municipal authorities, with public cenotaphs and the site of the so-called state fire. It was possible to clarify, for the most part, the history of its construction, as well as the function and the structure of the site, but also the transformation process of this ancient monumental building.
