Edgy and acute, 'Punk Rock' is a slow-building story of violence at school, told with compelling depth and tension. The play introduces us to seven high-achieving teenagers at a fee-paying grammar school. They are holed up in the Upper School library, tucked away from supervision, revising - or not, as the case may be - for their mock A-Levels. William, a bright Oxbridge-hopeful, falls for the enigmatic new girl Lilly, but she's falling for someone else. Watched by his girlfriend Cissy, Bennett bullies the unconfident Tanya and the awkward prodigy Chadwick. It is a recognisable stew of rivalries, desires and confusions, each character's uncertainties carefully drawn. But as exam pressure builds, anxiety flares up into aggression, revealing a raw undercurrent of panic and hostility. 'Punk Rock' premiered in 2009 at the Lyric Hammersmith, London.

Set in London in the sixties, the action of 'Saved' takes place amidst the cultural poverty and frustration of a generation of young people on the dole and living on council estates. The play opens on Len and Pam preparing to have sex and asking each other their names. Pam's parents are deadlocked in a stultified, silent marriage. Len stays with the family as a lodger despite being rejected by Pam, in order to keep an eye on her neglected baby. Pam leaves the baby with Frank, whom she claims is its father, leading to one of modern theatre's most shocking scenes.

'Gilbert Is Dead' is a Victorian scientific mystery play: a clever, funny and moving portrait of grief, faith and science. The plot follows Lucius Trickett, London's most celebrated taxidermist, who finds himself in cahoots with Queen Victoria and the hero Gilbert Shirley, to disprove Darwin's theory of evolution. The key is a stuffed specimen of the mysterious ghost loris, suicidal enough to disprove the theory that every animal struggles for survival. But Gilbert goes missing and the fate of Trickett's private museum hangs in the balance. The play's distinctive, often surrealist voice is characterised by historically intelligent, meticulously researched subjects and a precise, quirky sense of irony. 'Gilbert is Dead' premiered at Hoxton Music Hall, London in 2009.

Seven years have passed since the end of the Trojan War and Menelaus, King of Sparta and husband to Helen, is making his slow and painful way home. When his ship is wrecked on the coast of Egypt he stumbles upon what seems to be his wife lingering outside the royal palace. But if this is the real Helen, who was the beautiful woman stolen by Paris, for whom all Greece took up arms? Did Troy fall for nothing? Has it all been some god's idea of a joke?

Small Town, Fife. Andy and Vicky were meant to be getting married tomorrow. The trouble is, Andy's stag weekend was so epic, so legendary, that he didn't survive it. The finest pleasures that Amsterdam and Hamburg have to offer, together with a mile-high fling with a budget-airline stewardess, brought him down to earth with a bump. Now it's time for the post-mortem. A black comedy about waking up to find the party's over, Gregory Burke's 'Hoors' premiered at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in May 2009.

'Katrina' uses survivor testimonies and the rich cultural tradition of New Orleans to tell the story of the eponymous hurricane and its immediate aftermath, charting the infamous devastation that will live long in the American psyche. The plot follows from the death of Virgil, a decadent old New Orleanian, who has been killed by Hurricane Katrina. Trapped by the rising floodwater his partner Beatrice determines to take his body to safety at the City Hall. During her journey she encounters a number of other survivors and hears their stories. Schiller's 'Mary Stuart' is a grand historical drama telling the story of the personal struggle between two extraordinary women - one French, one English - both captive to the demands of sovereignty and both caught in a tumult of political and religious intrigue. Which of them is the rightful Queen of England: Mary Stuart or Elizabeth Tudor? Intertwined with this rivalry is a vicious struggle between Lord Burghley and the Earl of Leicester, both of whom feel a loyalty to their queen, while Leicester also harbours a secret passion for Mary. Mike Poulton's translation was written for a production that premiered at Clwyd Theatr Cymru in May 2009.

After six lonely weeks with nobody but her disabled boy for company, Rita Affleck, wealthy, beautiful and consumed by jealous love, welcomes home her husband Alfred. But, far from the passionate reunion she so craves, there is only torment as Alfred's possessive half-sister arrives, and he announces his great revelation. Taking Ibsen's 'Little Eyolf' as the inspiration for a passionate and tragic tale of obsessive love, set in 1950s England, Samuel Adamson's 'Mrs Affleck' opened at the National Theatre, London, in January 2009.

A play about fathers, sons and football, 'Billy Wonderful', first staged at the Liverpool Everyman in 2009, is a fast-paced coming-of-age play pulsing with all the excitement and physicality of match-day. As one-time boy wonder Billy Walters relives his debut in a Merseyside derby at the age of nineteen, ninety minutes cut across twenty-two years and fellow players become family and friends, enemies and lovers. Both Billy and the play are consumed by football: match commentators hover over his life, and fans shout their chants over the scenes. Billy flickers between an eager and hopeful child, self-satisfied young man convinced he is at the top of his game, and a slightly older but disillusioned drifter, desperate not to miss out on his dream and end up like his father. Billy Wonderful is a captivating story of fame and fortune, disappointment and family.

In 1881, the famed and enigmatic impresario Mr Edward Gant presented his renowned travelling show for the final time: a spectacle of grotesquery, tastelessness, black comedy, mystery and magic realism presided over by an opiate-addicted actor. Neilson has reconstructed this intriguing and fantastic historical event, offering a strange and beautiful exploration of sadness and mortality and probing the nature of theatre and spectacle. With a cast that includes a girl whose face sprouts pearls and a teddy bear desperate for an imaginary cup of tea, it is a theatrical piece combining the melodrama, extravagance and painful loneliness that characterised a Victorian freak show. It was first performed in 2002 at The Theatre Royal, Plymouth.

Originally written in French and translated into English by Beckett, 'Endgame' was given its first London performance at the Royal Court Theatre in 1957. Outside lies a world of death. Inside the room the blind, impervious Hamm sits in a wheelchair while his lame servant, Clov, scuttles about obeying his orders. Each depends fractiously on the other: Hamm alone knows the combination of the larder while Clov is his master's eyes and last remnant of human contact. The only other survivors are Hamm's legless parents, Nagg and Nell, who squat in dustbins upstage and die during the play.

Molly Davies's keen-edged and sparse debut play, premiered at the Royal Court in 2009, is about wanting a better life. Nineteen-year-old Amy, who works in a chicken nuggets factory, is a reluctant single mother, and her baby daughter is looked after by Amy's mother most of the time. When her old school friend Gary comes back from the army on leave, they have sex and do drugs and Amy begins to hope that with her new boyfriend and the shining promise of a trip to Brighton she can rise out of the life she feels trapped by. But flashes of violence and self-loathing show us frustrated hopes and very real characters. This important play is set in Norfolk, in a depressed and struggling agricultural community, a reminder that social deprivation is not just an inner city problem.
