This historical anthology of Korean poetry, ancient, medieval, and premodern Korean songs and poems highlights the evolution of poetic composition in the vernacular. The book is a manifesto of the uniquely Korean poetic tradition, which flourished quite separately along with the literary tradition retained by the men of letters devoted to the scholarship in classical Chinese. The beauty of the Korean language and the tradition of verse-making in it are sumptuously demonstrated by this book, which contains both the original texts in the unique Korean orthography of phonograms and the translator's English version that runs in parallel with the original poems.

This is the first book in English to offer an extensive introduction to the Tongmunsŏn (Selections of Refined Literature of Korea)—the largest and most important Korean literary collection created prior to the twentieth century—as well as translations of essays from key chapters. The Tongmunsŏn was compiled in 1478 by Sŏ Kŏjŏng (1420-1488) and other Chosŏn literati at the command of King Sŏngjong (r. 1469–1494). It was modeled after the celebrated Chinese anthology Wen Xuan and contains poetry and prose in an extensive array of styles and genres. The Translators’ Introduction begins by describing the general structure of the Tongmunsŏn and contextualizes literary output in Korea within the great sweep of East Asian literature from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries. The entire Tongmunsŏn as well as all of the essays selected for translation were written in hanmun (as opposed to Korean vernacular), which points to a close literary connection between the continent and the peninsula. The Introduction goes on to discuss the genres contained in the Tongmunsŏn and examines style as revealed through prosody. The translation of two of these genres (treatises and discourses) in four books of the Tongmunsŏn showcases prose-writing and the intellectual concerns of the age. Through their discussions of morality, nature, and the fantastic, we see Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian themes at work in essays by some of Korea’s most distinguished writers, among them Yi Kyubo, Yi Saek, Yi Chehyŏn, and Chŏng Tojŏn. The translations also include annotations and extensive cross-references to classical allusions in the Chinese canon, making the present volume an essential addition to any East Asian literature collection Frontmatter -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Note on the Translation -- I. Translators’ Introduction -- Translators’ Introduction -- II. Translation Selections from the Tongmunsŏn: Discourses and Treatises -- Selections from the Tongmunsŏn: Discourses and Treatises -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Glossary-Index

International Poetry Nights in Hong Kong (IPNHK) is an award-winning biennial poetry festival established by the renowned contemporary Chinese poet Bei Dao. Since its debut in 2009, IPNHK has become the most influential series of international poetry events in sinophone areas, delivered internationally acclaimed poets' thoughts and ideas about poetry to contemporary China, and stimulated Chinese poets' reflection upon their own conditions of reading world poetry. Following the enormous success of previous editions, IPNHK's 2017 event is scheduled to happen from 22-26 November in Hong Kong, with the theme "Ancient Enmity," and invites more than twenty poets and lyricists from different parts of the world to share and read their works in the hope of encouraging exchange among poets and lyricists. Poets include Gabeba Baderoon (South Africa), Javier Bello (Chile), Chen Dongdong (China), Jérôme Game (France), Major Jackson (U.S.), George Szirtes (UK), Anja Utler (Germany), Haris Vlavianos (Greece), and others. The IPNHK anthology includes selections of the most internationally acclaimed contemporary poetry by the invited poets, accompanied by unique Chinese and English translations in bilingual or trilingual formats

An English rendition of a collection of poetry by Do Jong-hwan, one of Korea's most beloved poets. Do's literary career started in 1984, when he released Age of Division while teaching Korean language and literature to high-school students. His second poetry collection, You the Hollyhock, sold over a million copies and was made into a film, and he became one of Korea's most influential poets during the 1980s, popular among critics and readers alike. Through poetry, Do found beauty in the poverty of his youth and in the sadness and pain from losing his wife to illness. This is the first English translation of selected poems by one of the most important and unusual modern poets of South Korea. In contrast to the strident political protests found in the poetry of many of his contemporaries, Pak Chaesam's work is characterized by intimate portraits of place, nature, childhood, and human relationships, and by indirection, nostalgia, and reflectiveness. Often focused upon the border of this world and some other, Pak writes with a spareness of presentation but a cornucopia of imagery, meticulously exploring objective and subjective realms of existence and memory. Encouraging the reader to see and listen, and to allow the sensory to reshape the analytical, Pak's poetry opens up new realms of experience. A fellow Korean poet described Pak's poetry as being "the most exquisite expression of the Korean sense of han," or melancholy

The poems in this collection are located between a lost world and today's modernity, poised between celebration and lamentation, as icons of loss and yearning. The reader is carried into unfamiliar spaces of scenery and also of language, as the translators retain echoes of the Korean originals, intent on transmitting each poet's vision of an unfamiliar other place to readers who are eager to be transported.- Brother Anthony, literary translator and professor emeritus of Sokang University

This historical anthology of Korean poetry, 'Ancient, Medieval, and Premodern Korean Songs and Poems' highlights the evolution of poetic composition in the vernacular. The book is a manifesto of the uniquely Korean poetic tradition, which flourished quite separately along with the literary tradition retained by the men of letters devoted to the scholarship in classical Chinese. The beauty of the Korean language and the tradition of verse-making in it are sumptuously demonstrated by this book, which contains both the original texts in the unique Korean orthography of phonograms and the translator?s English version that runs in parallel with the original poems. 0
