    Le présent volume contient les Actes du colloque international sur les " Représentations et conceptions de l'espace dans la culture médiévale " qui s'est déroulé du 19 au 21 octobre 2009 sous les auspices de l'Institut d'Etudes Médiévales de l'Université de Fribourg (Suisse). La participation de spécialistes de rang international à cette rencontre atteste du vif intérêt que suscitent aujourd'hui dans la communauté scientifique la perception et la compréhension médiévales de l'espace. En effet, d'importantes études menées au cours de la dernière décennie auront éclairé sous un nouveau jour la signification complexe de l'espace dans la civilisation du Moyen Age latin, qui se décline sur plusieurs registres : social, économique, politique, culturel et religieux. Loin d'apaiser la curiosité scientifique, les études récentes sur ces diverses facettes de l'espace médiéval ont ouvert de nouveaux horizons, suscité des interrogations nouvelles, mis à jour un vaste chantier d'investigation sur les rapports aux lieux et à l'espace dans la vie et la culture du Moyen Age européen. Le colloque visait donc à explorer davantage quelques pistes de recherche. Il a réuni des chercheurs de pays, de langues, de cultures et de domaines scientifiques différents. Il a ainsi donné lieu à un dialogue animé qui aura permis de confronter et d'enrichir mutuellement les visions de l'espace médiéval des spécialistes de l'histoire, de la philosophie, de l'histoire de l'art et de la littérature This volume contains the records of the international Freiburg Colloquium of the same name which was held by the Medieval Institute of the University of Freiburg from October 19 to 21, 2009. The academic reconstruction of the conception and perception of space in the culture of the Latin Middle Ages requires a differentiated treatment and corresponding competencies - something which can be realized only through an interdisciplinary approach. Each contributor to this volume examines the given theme from the perspective of his or her own specialist field

    "The Makura no Sôshi, or The Pillow Book as it is generally known in English, is a collection of personal reflections and anecdotes about life in the Japanese royal court composed around the turn of the eleventh century by a woman known as Sei Shônagon. Its opening section, which begins haru wa akebono, or "spring, dawn," is arguably the single most famous passage in Japanese literature. Throughout its long life, The Pillow Book has been translated countless times. It has captured the European imagination with its lyrical style, compelling images and the striking personal voice of its author. Worlding Sei Shônagon guides the reader through the remarkable translation history of The Pillow Book in the West, gathering almost fifty translations of the "spring, dawn" passage, which span one-hundred-and-thirty-five years and sixteen languages. Many of the translations are made readily available for the first time in this study. The versions collected in Worlding Sei Shônagon are an enlightening example of the many ways in which translations can differ from their source text, undermining the idea of translation as the straightforward transfer of meaning from one language to another, one culture to another.     Das Interesse an einer gleichberechtigten Teilhabe im Design hat von den 1960er-Jahren bis in die Gegenwart zu einer Reihe produktiver Gestaltungspraktiken und Theorien geführt. Heute stellt sich jedoch die Frage, ob das Leitbild der partizipatorischen Gestaltung nicht auf einem idealisierenden Verständnis von Demokratie und sozialer Beteiligung gründet. Der Band unternimmt eine kritische Bestandsaufnahme der partizipatorischen Gestaltung, ihrer Entwicklung und der gegenwärtigen Theoriebildung. Silentiary's poems respectively describe the church and its (now lost) pulpit. The Descriptio S. Sophiae also contains a lavish praise of emperor Justinian and of the patriarch Eutichius. De Stefani’s edition is based on a collation of the witness of the text, Heid. Pal. gr. 23, and takes into account all previous bibliography. Some corrupted passages of the poems have been emendated, thefew false readings still present in the text printed by the last, authoritative editor, P. Friedländer (1912), have been corrected. In Sources of Slavic Pre-Christian Religion Juan Antonio Álvarez-Pedrosa presents the original texts as well as English translations of all known medieval sources that inform us about the religion practiced by the Slavs before their Christianization. Since the Slavs did not have a written culture before their conversion to Christianity, all the texts were authored by people who were involved in this long process or in contact with the Slavs. For this reason, the texts come from a lengthy period from the ninth to the fifteenth century. On the provenance of Artistic Creation Gino Zaccaria offers a philosophical meditation on the issue of art in light of its original sense. The book shows how this sense can be fully understood provided that our thinking, on the one hand, returns to the ancient Greek world where it must heed, in particular, the voice and hints of the goddess Athena, and, on the other hand, listens to "artist-thinkers" close to our current epoch, like Cézanne, Boccioni or van Gogh. What will finally appear will not be an abstract notion of art, but its enigma; that is to say, the promise of a conversion of art itself towards its "other beginning"."

This volume explores different aspects of the reception of Firdausi’s Shahnama or ‘Book of Kings’, both within Iran and in neighbouring lands. Later poets and writers not only looked to Firdausi’s work for a model, but supplemented its stories with other narratives or absorbed the characters and the moral values of the poem into their own works. Several chapters focus on the literary traditions fed by the Shahnama , including reports of the continuing oral performances of its more popular stories. Others discuss Firdausi’s impact on the creative imagination of the miniature painters who illustrated manuscript copies of the Shahnama in the courts of the Ottoman Empire, Moghul India, and the Central Asia Khanates up till the seventeenth century.     Der Begriff ,Theatron', der die Zusammenkunft von an Literatur Interessierten bezeichnet, lässt sich über den gesamten Zeitraum des byzantinischen Zeitraumes nachweisen. Angefangen bei Libanios findet man Zeugnisse in der mittelbyzantinischen Zeit und in der spätbyzantinischen Periode erlebte diese Form des Austausches, bei dem es auch um den sozialen Aufstieg und networking ging, eine letzte Blüte. Einige der 22 Studien dieses Bandes widmen sich diesem gesellschaftlichen Phänomen, während sich die übrigen mit der Untersuchung der rhetorischen Kultur in unterschiedlichen gesellschaftlichen Sphären befassen. Rhetorik hatte über den Unterrichtsbereich hinaus eine wichtige Funktion in der Öffentlichkeit, etwa bei Trauerreden oder bei Reden vor dem Kaiser. Aber auch im militärischen Bereich war die Feldherrenrede ein wichtiger Bestandteil des Alltags
