They appear as active parts of the liturgy and in vivid depictions of biblical women, giving a voice to Eve’s grief, Mary’s muddle, Sara’s struggle. This essay aims to shed light on the themes of suffering and death as resonated through women’s voices in selected ancient Syriac texts. It is set out to be an exemplary excursion into the rich treasury of Syriac literature with its many aspects of gender and the exposure to mortality, affliction and death.

    Other ; En este artículo se discute la importancia que comportan la enseñanza y la adquisición de los marcadores discursivos conversacionales para el desarrollo de la competencia comunicativa de los estudiantes de E/LE. Se asume que los marcadores discursivos permiten, además de conectar oraciones y otorgar al texto cohesión y coherencia, inferir la intención comunicativa del hablante y que algunos de ellos pueden funcionar como índices de cortesía verbal. Asimismo, sostenemos la validez de enseñar el español desde una postura pluricéntrica de la lengua. Por tal razón, exploramos los marcadores conversacionales de la variedad mexicana que indican cortesía con el fin de ofrecer una propuesta de categorización de tales marcadores y unos modelos de actividades didácticas para el/la enseñante de E/LE. Consideramos que al esclarecer las funciones que dichas partículas cumplen, el profesor/la profesora puede propiciar la ampliación del conocimiento del estudiante sobre otras variedades del español, así como suscitar la reflexión sobre las diferencias de algunas normas de cortesía verbal en las distintas culturas hispánicas, logrando con ello el fortalecimiento de la competencia pragmática de los alumnos.

    Other ; In order to grasp the imaginative geographical and historical scope of contemporary Indian writing in English, this thesis claims that it is necessary to think about literature beyond the paradigms of national, postcolonial or even transnational diasporic literatures. It is asserted that cosmopolitanism, which is here understood to be a concept that encompasses the negotiation of the ethics and practice of migration, community, responsibility, difference and sameness, offers the possibility of thinking critically about migration and globalization in the context of the literary texts at the centre of this thesis: Amitav Ghosh’s Sea of Poppies (2008) and River of Smoke (2011), Salman Rushdie’s The Enchantress of Florence (2007) and M.G. Vassanji’s The Assassin’s Song (2007). Literary criticism has acknowledged the relevance of cosmopolitan thought in contemporary literatures of a global, transnational literary imaginary. Yet the literature concerned with cosmopolitanism has, with a few exceptions, mainly used it as a descriptive rather than as an interpretative term, focusing on the politics of these fictional texts rather than on their aesthetics or in this case, to be more precise, their literary features. In this thesis, the interest is to examine the ethics, practice and aesthetics of cosmopolitan moments in which histories and geographies are rewritten and reimagined, i.e. the propensity of these four novels to remap, rethink and reimagine these narratives of time and space according to an understanding that moves away from postcolonial dichotomies towards a more global view of events that still takes into account existing power relations.

    Other ; The article examines the conceptual metaphor of illness in representations of financial crises. Understanding the economy in terms of the body is one of the dominant concepts in contemporary media coverage on economic events. Accordingly, images of illness proliferate in the discourse on the financial crisis of 2008/2009. This paper presents a quantitative analysis of illness metaphors in 53 articles on the financial crisis published from August 2008 to September 2009 in the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel. The journalistic metaphors of illness interpret the financial crisis as a disease and thus naturalize the economic events. The second part of the article analyzes an alternative use of illness metaphors in literary and autobiographical texts on traders. Instead of understanding the economy as a victim of an illness, these texts ascribe an infectious quality to the economic system. In these representations the financial economy is criticized for causing diseases not only of its participants, but of the society in general.

    Other ; Background The paper sheds light on the development of the cultural representation of HIV/AIDS in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from the 1980ies until present. It analyses the contribution of literature, theatre, and film to the public discourse about HIV/AIDS and characterises the rhetorical and iconographic strategies used to construct, represent, and discuss the disease and deal with it. The presentation shows which functions literature, theatre and film have performed within the HIV/AIDS discourse during the last 30 years in German speaking countries. Methods Having a background in Cultural Studies, Theatre Studies and German Studies the study uses methods from these disciplines to analyse the reception of aesthetic strategies – the ‘what’ and ‘how’ – of literary, theatrical and cinematic representations of HIV/AIDS on a micro level. On a macro level interdiscourse analysis (Jürgen Link) and sociological systems theory (Niklas Luhmann) are applied to describe the dramaturgical development of the HIV/AIDS discourse in German speaking countries. Results The public HIV/AIDS discourse in German speaking countries can be divided into seven stages characterised by different dominant modes of representing HIV/AIDS: exclusion and blame, prevention, integration, refuse of integration, apocalyptic scenarios, thrill, and normalisation. The dramaturgy of the HIV/AIDS discourse is initialised by the occurrence of the new disease in the 1980ies. In the first years it followed the pattern of historical epidemic discourses (plague, leprosy, syphilis). Since then, two major plotpoints have changed the structure of the discourse altogether: the discovery of the HI-Virus and the introduction of combined antiretroviral therapy. In the 21st century HIV/AIDS starts to become normalised. Nevertheless discrimination patterns known from the HIV/AIDS discourse of the 1980ies can be found again in medial representations. Conclusions The paper discusses the complex relationship between cultural and medical communication in the face of HIV/AIDS. Literature, theatre, and film perform different functions dealing with the disease: 1. feeding rhetorical and iconographic representations into the public discourse 2. observing and documenting the discourse about HIV/AIDS in the mass media 3. intervening in the public discourse through criticism or alternative interpretations 4. offering coping / passing strategies and strategies of assigning meaning to the disease.

    Other ; Der vorliegende Sammelband möchte einen Überblick über den Stand der Forschung zur deutschen Wortbildung und damit in einem Bereich der deutschen Grammatik geben, der in den letzten Jahren eher wenig Beachtung gefunden hat. Dies erstaunt insofern, als es wohl kaum einen Aspekt der Morphologie des Deutschen gibt, der lebendiger ist und produktiver genutzt wird als die Wortbildung. Umso wichtiger scheint es, die aktuellen Ansätze in diesem Arbeitsgebiet in einem Sammelband zusammenzufassen. Der Blick auf den Gegenstand erfolgt dabei aus vier ganz unterschiedlichen Perspektiven, um so in der Summe ein möglichst umfassendes Bild zu ergeben. Vier Beiträge zu eher grundsätzlichen Fragestellungen bilden den unter „Allgemeines“ zusammengefassten ersten Teil des Bandes, in dem es um Grenzen zu Flexionsmorphologie und Syntax (Hentschel), um Sprachkontaktphänomene (Hofer), um Akronyme (Kromminga) und um die Deutung der Nominalisierungsprozesse bei Partikelverben geht (Öhl). Es folgen zwei Beiträge, die sich mit der Geschichte der Wortbildung befassen, indem sie Komposita in den Schriften Notkers III. von St. Gallen (Raag) sowie Abstrakta bei Schiller (Lühr) untersuchen. Auch toponomastischen sowie dialektologischen Aspekten sind je zwei Beiträge gewidmet: Zum einen geht es um spezifische Wortakzentverhältnisse bei Ortsnamen (Fetzer) und um neue Wörter als Grundlage für Flurnamen (Gerhardt), zum anderen um Diminutiva im luxemburgisch-moselfränkischen Übergangsgebiet (Edelhoff) und um das Fugen-s im Ostfränkischen (Nickel). Abgerundet wird die Behandlung des Themas durch vier Beiträge sprachvergleichender Art, in denen das Thailändische (Attaviriyanupap) und das Albanische (Hamiti und Sadiku/Rexhepi), aber auch das Niederländische und Schwedische mit herangezogen werden (Battefeld/Leuschner/Rawoens). Auf diese Weise entsteht ein Panoramabild des Gegenstandes und zugleich ein Einblick in die aktuelle Forschung in diesem Bereich der Morphologie.
