"This title was originally meant to discuss the essence and activity of the demonic forces in Lurianic Kabbalah, but was expanded as a monograph dealing with the main principles of the Lurianic Kabbalah as a whole. The research is based mainly on the writings of Hayyim ben Joseph Vital, a student of Rabbi Luria. The author comes to the conclusion that from the Lurianic Kabbalah arises a bold myth of a covert ancient dualism of divinity, in which dealing with evil forces serves as a central element. This short study is the first in a comprehensive investigation of Lurianic Kabbalism."

"In the 1880s, Warsaw was a hub for Jewish writers and cultural agents from across the Russian Empire and outside it. In just two generations, it became the most dynamic and prolific center for Hebrew and Yiddish literature and journalism. Writers active in Warsaw not only enriched Jewish culture but also played an active role in Jewish life in Poland, facing a variety of everyday challenges. The main manifestation of literary life was the Union of Jewish Writers and Journalists, a socially and culturally significant institution. It reflected the ever-changing facets of the Jewish literary environment in Warsaw. This book reveals a variety of sources pertaining to this vibrant life in the years 1918-1939, as well as the years of ghetto and destruction, 1939-1942. Different historical and social aspects of this period in Jewish history are examined vis-à-vis these and other sources."

This play chronicles the development and demise of the 'paradise city' of Mahagonny in a series of tableaux capturing the baser aspects of human nature. Three criminals create the city in order to trap money: it is a place of pleasure, where no-one works, everyone drinks, gambles, brawls and visits prostitutes, and all that matters is whether you can pay your way. A hurricane passing dangerously close to the city encourages complete lawlessness and debauchery, and soon the raving, delirious city destroys itself.

'Ghosts' is Ibsen's formidably realistic play about the effects of previous generations on the young, a stinging satire on contemporary Norwegian society and morality, and a haunting tragedy that, more than a century since it premiered, still retains its power to shock. Nigeria, England, America, Jamaica; are you proud of where you're from? Dark skinned, light skinned, afro, weaves, who are your true brothers and sisters? When two brothers from different continents go down the street to buy a pint of milk, they lift the lid on a disunited nation where everyone wants to be an individual but no one wants to stand out from the crowd. Bola Agbaje's comic, astute play about identity, history and culture depicts a world where respect is always demanded but rarely freely given. 'Gone Too Far!' premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in February 2007.

'Joe Guy', first staged in 2007 at Ipswich's New Wolsey Theatre, is a stark and powerful contemporary story about football and fame, exploring the historical tension and bitter prejudices existing between African and Caribbean British communities. Joseph Boateng is a Ghanaian boy, relentlessly abused at school by white and West Indian peers for his African origins. The only exception is Naomi, his childhood sweetheart, who is British and of Jamaican parentage. The play follows Joe from a nervous boy working in a fast food restaurant to a flash football hero, rolling in money, women and sex scandals. As his celebrity status escalates, Joe disguises his voice and sheds his heritage in order to talk the talk with his fellow stars. The play weaves between the promising start of his footballing career and its arrogant peak, as his ascent brings sacrifices, accusations of selling out, temptations and life-changing choices. 'Joe Guy' is an urgent discussion of identity and celebrity, unflinching in its examination of complex and pervasive racial hostilities.

A scorching indictment of nineteenth century capitalism, Ibsen's penultimate play paints a devastating picture of selfish ambition. John Gabriel Borkman paces alone in an upstairs room. Downstairs, his wife Gunhild waits for their son to vindicate the family name. They have lived on separate floors for eight years, following Borkman's imprisonment for fraud on an enormous scale. Gunhild's twin sister Ella, who was also in love with Borkman, arrives - she is dying, and comes to lay her claim to Erhart, the nephew whom she brought up during Borkman's incarceration. This version by David Eldridge premiered in 2007 at the Donmar Warehouse, London.

First performed at London's Apollo Theatre in 1976, 'Confusions', a series of one-act plays, typifies Ayckbourn's particular brand of black comedy on human behaviour. The plays are alternately naturalistic, stylised and farcical, but underlying each is the echoing problem of profound loneliness. 'The Mother Figure' shows a mother unable to escape from baby talk; in 'The Drinking Companion' an absentee husband attempts seduction without success; in 'Between Mouthfuls' a waiter oversees a fraught dinner encounter. A garden party gets out of hand in 'Gosforth's Fête' while 'A Talk in the Park' is a revue style curtain call piece for five actors. Whether the comedies concern marital conflict, infidelity or motherhood; take place on a park bench or at a village fete, the characters are familiar and their cries for help instantly recognisable.

'Days of Significance' was written in response to 'Much Ado About Nothing', and follows the love lives and mortal fears of young soldiers departing their English market-towns for the deserts of Iraq. The first act sees two young soldiers join their friends to stumble, drink and brawl before they leave for active service; the play buzzes with the coarse jokes, insults and confrontations of a night out, though there's a nervous spark of true romance buried in the teasing confrontation. The second act sees the soldiers transferred to Iraq, where they are morally out of their depth, and fighting in a war they don't understand. Williams's play, which premiered at the Swan Theatre in 2007, looks at how the naive and malformed moral codes of these young men have catastrophic reverberations for the West's moral authority.

Hallway-dwelling Semyon is unemployed and disheartened with life. When his last hope at turning his life around disappears he decides to commit suicide, only to find that a number of people would like him to die on their behalf. On the night of the deed, a party grows towards a glorious climax. Moira Buffini has freely adapted Nikolai Erdman's 'The Suicide', which was banned by Stalin before a single performance, to create 'Dying For It'. It premiered at the Almeida Theatre, London in March 2007.

Susan is a hairdresser who feels that there must be more to life than having children, so she renames herself 'Rita' after her favourite fictional character and applies for an Open University course in English Literature. Set entirely in the scholarly clutter of Dr Frank Bryant's office, the play follows Rita's efforts to escape her old life, and her blossoming into a literary connoisseur under Frank's sporadic direction. Terribly funny and terribly sad, the play is both a comic masterwork and a poignant examination of education, class and disillusionment. 'Educating Rita' premiered in London in 1980. It was subsequently made into a highly successful film with Michael Caine and Julie Walters. This revised version was first performed in 2002 at the Liverpool Playhouse.

'Flower Girls' is the funny, beautifully observed and uplifting story of a group of disabled women who live and work at The Crippleage, Edgware. Inspired by the personal testimony and reminiscences of real-life Flower Girls, the play shifts effortlessly between the unsettled early years of World War II and the seemingly more liberated world of 1965. Their stories reveal an indomitable spirit and a fierce determination to find their place in the world, a world that prefers to keep them at a safe distance. 'Flower Girls' was commissioned by the Graeae Theatre Company and John Grooms and first toured as a co-production between Graeae and the New Wolsey Theatre Ipswich in October 2007.

Jonson's exuberant comedy uses the carnival energy of Bartholmew Fair, an actual fair held in a disreputable suburb of London, to dramatize, satirize and celebrate the appetites and comic frailties of the human body. The depiction of the Fair, teeming with sleazy but energetic life, is one of the great creations of English drama. 'Bartholmew Fair' is said to have been first performed in 1613 at the Hope playhouse.
